Tell me again why this series gets so much praise? Is it just the pixel art? Because the gameplay is far too coin-grabby and turns from fun to frustrating very quickly if you haven't memorized the arbitrary stage layouts.

Your complaint is that it's too hard. Are we supposed to take this seriously?

If you don't understand you don't understand.

No, my complaint is that the difficulty stems from manipulative arcade-era design choices that are typically shunned even in retro games. An arcade game with poorer graphics would definitely catch flak for having unresponsive controls and invisible/cluttered sprites.

Why is everyone getting so shitty because he doesn't like the game? It's like you're taking it personally.

Besides, it sounds like a legit criticism to me. Aren't good games meant to be reacted to, rather than memorised as a sequence of button presses?

Anyway, arcade games are almost always shit anyway because - as noted - they're designed to make you pump coins in.

If Mario 64 was an arcade game then it would be bollocks.

>> No.3368151

Because both you and the OP are whining that a difficult game is unfair and poorly designed based on your laziness and lack of determination. Good games are meant to be "reacted" to? What, watched? Games are meant to be played. It's one thing not to like difficult arcade games, but it's extremely bitchy and obnoxious to imply that they're designed wrong because you can't just coast through them with no effort.

This is probably bait, but this is the one thing that really, really irritates me about "modern gamer culture" If you think tough games are "poorly designed quarter munchers", then stop bitching and leave them to the people who play games rather than complain about them.

Christ, you're fucking stupid. Yes, reacted to. As in you see something (a hazard, etc) and you can evade it without prior knowledge of its appearance. Get it? You see it, your brain computes your response. Rather than: you know it's coming in a sec, so you mentally prepare yourself to do a rehearsed maneouvre (that came from trial and error in the first place).

Or do you like Dragon's Lair or something?

>>3368151
>If you think tough games are "poorly designed quarter munchers", then stop bitching and leave them to the people who play games rather than complain about them.
Or we could discuss them on some sort of discussion board for videogames of that era. Where could I find one please? I thought this was one but apparently I was wrong.

>> No.3368231

It does kinda bug me that "gitting gud" at this series is literally just rote memorisation, you play it over and over 'til you know what patterns are coming and when; but I love 'em anyways.

I can let it slide because each game is so short, they're like half an hour long tops. So it's not like memorising them is some sort of maximum autist neckbeard challenge, it's just the sort of thing you pick up to play when you have a bit of time to kill, and gradually you get better and better, and it's more rewarding each time.

If they were longer and more time consuming then I'd consider it a much more valid criticism. The strength of the artwork, music, and just having such a refined, pure game feel all far outweigh the "quarter muncher" difficulty curve.

You should literally never play anything made by FROM Software.

>GAMES ARE TOO HARD FOR ME THAT MEANS THEY ARE BAD. I DIED BECAUSE SOMETHING UNEXPECTED HAPPENED AND THE GAME DIDN'T HOLD MY HAND.

Seriously half the games on /vr/ are known for varying degrees of borderline unfair difficulty that is literally a massive part of the allure of retro games. If you don't like games demanding that the player actually improve their own skillset to find success in the game.

I suck at fighting games. I am honestly god fucking awful at them. It's not because they are too hard and they should be easier it's because I have never tried to improve at them as I don't care for fighting games.

I don't think they should be changed to cater to me at all because I am not a fan of what they inherently are.

You and OP don't like really hard games. That's fine. Go play something else.

You can cheese it hoarding weapons. You can reach him with tons of Laser or Shotgun Ammo depending on the route (bombs are useless so you can use them to conserve ammo).

>>3366874
Pretty much this. In 1-5 the edges of the screen are safe spaces (lel).

>>3367906
You can let one breath in level 8 then finish the rest with regular bombs.

>>3368178
>As in you see something (a hazard, etc) and you can evade it without prior knowledge of its appearance.
Most of the enemies have slow ass projectiles, you can wing it most of the time. Also many aren't too durable so you really have to go out of your way to see some attacks (ie, letting weak enemy crowd up, getting too close to the man eating plants that will theatrically jolt back before trying to bite you or touching the slow, shootable sprout that lazily floats around after they die). Most machines are set by default levels 4-6 that are pretty manageable (slower, less durable enemies, slower projectiles, smaller enemy attack hitboxes...). There are a few deliberate traps set up, but those are more amusing than aggravating the first time you trigger them.

And the funny thing is that it kind of discourages credit feeding since you're left depowered with the default pistol if you get killed and the free machinegun that you get after continuing is pretty weak compared to pretty much every other weapon and vehicle in game. Also there's no difficulty scaling so you're aren't punished for doing OK like those shmups where you have to power down or tactically dying to ease off the difficulty.

Metal Slug 1 and 2 were early and had a lot of slowdown which affected the controls.

Try 3 and X, they have smoother controls.
2 has extreme slowdown and is merely a curiosity since X is an optimized version of 2, so you can skip that one.

Metal Slug 1 has the most "militaristic" theme and IMO the best level design by far. The sequels start adding a lot of weird shit. MS3 is more like a monster movie romp than a fight against a rogue militia.
