I want to know /vr/'s favorite lesser known or obscure arcade games that are worth checking out

Really good Quarth-like timeattack puzzler. Shame it never got ported to PSX with a randomized mode though. Would be up there for me with TGM, Dr. Mario, Devil Dice, etc

Can someone please explain MAME to me
I greatly prefer how the mameui version looks, but like 1% of my roms will work on it. Meanwhile on the regular MAME program, it will display and play almost all of my roms
How can I get the ui to do what the regular one does

Each time they update the program, there's a chance a better, more complete or more accurate copy of each game, or just the roms chips from it, has been found and dumped. Sometimes they condense the rom sets too, and this also changes things. There's also master roms and clones. Final fight has tons of versions. One is intact, the rest modify that set for different regions, clones, etc. You need the master sets, which are normally larger. There's no other way to tell, save combing through a site like emuparadise.com, whose sets are only at 0.164 right now.

For a partcular version of MAME, you need the same version romsets. For MAME 0.175, a lot of older roms are going to work, but not all, and the further back you go the worse the problem becomes.

Protip for those getting into mame who don't wanna fuck around with command line programs:
Get RomCenter. Pic related.

You point RomCenter at your mame executable, it will generate a .dat file containing all info about the rom's mame expects. Then you point it at your rom directory. It will go through and let you know if your shit is good to go, broken, missing files, and whatnot. Even better, if files are missing it will tell you what files you need 99% of the time. The only time it's ever failed me was with SF Rush, when it didn't point out a bios file I needed. Nice and simple color code.
Green = Got everything, lets go
Yellow = Game will probably work, but you don't have everything(you don't have all the clones and derivatives)
Red = Missing important ROM or BIOS files, will NOT run.
This, combined with a full romset and the "rollback" romset, you can make compatible romsets for any version of mame you want, provided you have a .dat for it or can create one.

You can use this with the 0.164 roms from emuparadise to build a current set easily. Or with any older set you can find really. As long as you can google up the missing files you need, RomCenter can handle the rest.

Oh, and P.S., I use a "merged" romset, where every single variant and clone of a game is inside of a single zip, along with whatever bios files are needed. Most people use "split" romsets where everything is a separate zip, but I hate seeing 18 versions of Pac-Man on my lists so I went with merged. You can choose which way you want to go in settings for RomCenter.
