If you want a good Doom game on android, I would recommend D-Touch (its on the amazon app store), it has Gzdoom, Chocolate Doom and PRBoom, and the controls arent that bad for a touch screen, although its not free, so theres that.

For anyone who's proficient with map formats here: what's the exact status on the BLOCKMAP lump and how it interacts with UDMF? It's not very clear from the documentation or forum discussions whether it's read at all, corrupts the map, etc. (I know ZNODES is technically all you need, but several people mention that it is actually read even in said map format)

I've got a fuckhuge level that locks up the internal node builder for a good while when the map is loaded (subsequent loads seem cached and take a fraction of the time), so I'm thinking about manually generating the blockmap and throwing it in there, but I'm not sure if it'd be a complete waste of time or at all possible.

Another thing I'm not too certain about is whether having a lot of merged sectors due to shared textures/heights bumps up the time it takes to generate nodes because of the sector/sidedef imbalance (pic related), so if anyone knows whether that matters at all, it'd be a great help. Thanks in advance.

Been playing Alien Vendetta with Accessories To Murder.
It's pretty fun, but it does get a bit aggravating at times.
Macubi having splash damage is annoying.
The Arachnotron replacements are dumb and are TOO powerful.
And I swear, the Cyberdemons and Spider Masterminds just shrug off the BFG shots. Are they immune to it's splash damage? Cause it feels like it. I had to save up Minigun ammo to make sure I could take them down.
Oh, and when the map gets kinda slaughtery, it doesn't help, but that's a problem that's only as bad as it is because of them being used together, so it's a problem of neither.

Lost Souls are more dangerous because they are very good at moving into places where you don't want them to be. This hurts your mobility options which is doomguy's strongest weapon and defense. So you get surrounded by these modestly damaging things, you die, you run into a lost soul instead of dodging a rocket, you die, or the classic you tried to shoot a pain elemental with a rocket launcher just before it sent a flaming skull in front of you, you die.

At least they wind up picking fights with each other often, which gives them something to do for awhile.

Has anyone ever modded player damage sounds to vary depending on how much armor you're wearing? Like if you had say, 75% or above and an Imp scratched you you'd hear a kind of metallic scrape instead of ripping flesh, or when hit with a bullet you'd hear a metallic "ting"?

I've downloaded Random Deaths and Decorations to use in conjunction with SmoothDoom-WeaponsOnly and there's two paks, RDND15 and RDND15Z, are there any differences or should I load both? Using latest GZDoom Git

It's even more annoying when your project is heavily reliant on both dynamic lights and voxels. Sure, I could convert everything to actual models (which is laughably the least insane option), cut out all lights altogether and force people to play software mode, or whoever the fuck knows, write a compat patch to force ZDoom-style voxel rendering maybe. It'd get shut down anyway for not being useful :^)

The last time I tried doing something similar with voxels, .md2s ended up increasing the FPS by orders of magnitude even with hundreds in view at once, so I'm crossing my fingers it'll fix this shit too.

Guilty as charged. I've been keeping a low profile since I've been getting sidetracked by RL work and a bunch of other things (that, and the process of migrating pretty much everything script-related to GDCC took a bit of testing and experimentation) - apologies for not posting progress in the meantime, but I figure people aren't interested in hearing boring technical shit that needs to be worked around haphazardly.

It's not much, but here's an idea of what's been taking up some of that time - I'm carefully trudging through setting up the interfaces for interaction with most of these, not to mention the proper inventory tracking that actually makes them useful. There's enough GUI functionality at this point for a few of the gamemodes to be rudimentarily playable thanks to marrub I fucking love you you absolute madman come back anime was a mistake ;_;, but for some of the more advanced machines and features a couple of prerequisites have to be added which aren't exactly trivial.

I missed you /vr/, feel free to throw accusations of faggotry and hoaxes. Slowly but surely we'll make space great again.

The other DOOM engine games (Heretic, HeXen and Strife) also have Chocolate <game> engines available. Chex Quest doesn't, but since it's so similar to DOOM it's pretty trivial to load in Chocolate Doom.
There's a Chocolate Duke port for Duke Nukem 3D, but I have no idea how accurate it is to the original nor do I remember where to find it. EDuke32 is a viable alternative, but I don't know how it fares in the accuracy department.
Quake II runs on modern machines, but I'd recommend grabbing Yamagi Quake II as you may have issues with the original depending on your system.
Quake III as far as I'm aware has no issues with modern computers, though you still may want to grab ioquake3 or Spearmint.

Rise of the Triad apparently has WinROTT? I have no idea if it's any good or accurate to the original.
Marathon has Aleph One, which is supposedly accurate to the originals. I say "supposedly" because from what I hear about it being shitty I wouldn't be surprised if it had accuracy issues.

I literally just came back from my very first couple of games now after like a year or so from having last played TF2 at all on my gaming rig, so I had no other thing to opt for than to man the fuck up and eat that 4 gigs update and let it run all afternoon.

Off the press, there's only one button (which I got to work by getting rid of toonHUD because custom stuff apparently fucks shit up now). What in the fuck was wrong with the old server browser? This new interface looks like shit and is as intuitive and slow as fuckall. Where's sd_doomsday? And what is this retarded leveling system? Also screw that 'it's for the balancing' advertisement garbage, I ended up waiting for like 20 minutes just for a game to boot. Ok people, just hear me out.

How hard would it be to get (G)ZDoom to convert demo files to video files?
By which I mean, run the demo and dump the video. Render it directly.
Video encoding is worse the faster it has to be done, yes? And it can be slow, and skip frames. Fraps slows the machine down, and GZDoom sometimes has to skip frames to compensate.

Right now it doesn't look like there's a "no frameskip" option. What this means is that when GZDoom can't keep up with 60fps, rather than waiting until it's done drawing the frame, it just skips it. If you try NUTS.wad, the game doesn't slow down. It just has a bad framerate. The speed of everything is (generally) the same. With a video renderer, GZDoom would need an option to draw every frame, slowing the game down while it does so. This would ruin gameplay, but with Demos, the user input is already recorded, so no problems.

If GZDoom were able to render and encode video itself, people could record demos of themselves, then play those demos and turn on the video dump/render thing. GZDoom could take its sweet time rendering/encoding a good, high quality video with high framerate, no tearing, no frameskips, high quality everything, making a really good looking video with good quality/size ratio. (Or, a huge lossless video that can be encoded later by the user with some other program perhaps).

How hard would that be? To me, writing something that just dumps frames into an avi doesn't seem like it should be complicated. The hard part would be the "no frameskip" deal.
I mean, someone could just write a script to take a screenshot every tic. But that would limit the video to 35fps, and you'd have that screenshot message up there the whole time.

I was considering making a wad that adds small changes to the maps to make them more Hideous Destructor friendly.

Right now what that means is, if the map is literally impossible, change it until it is possible.

If there is an area not accessible because of HD, make it accessible.

For instance, in Map 06: The Crusher, in the room with the crusher there's a switch to bring down a lift that leads to a soulsphere.
But the lift goes back up too fast, (123 SR Lift Fast) and you can't reach it since you aren't fast.

So a simple solution is to change the lift to be slower. Then you can stumble your way there before it goes back up. But now you can't come back down without falling and taking falling damage. So it might be better to make this particular switch shootable. That way we can activate it on the lift so we don't have to drop.

There's other things to make the maps more HD friendly, such as cooling it on the ambushes.
Or alternatively, making you unable to skip large portions by climbing.
But I consider those to be more aggressive than what I'd do at the moment.

Also, if a map has a lot of unavoidable big falls (like the crusher), maybe add in an elevator or two.

Also, since doomguy can climb now, there are some areas he ought to be able to get to now, but can't because of invisible walls. I'd consider getting rid of those, even if it means he gets to cheat.

I've never been able to use Hammer for shit and as such never tried mapping for Source. I tried out Trenchbroom and it's a whole new world- the full 3d view controls let you extrude and shape things wherever you want, when you want without using the grid views (which are still available, if you want to use them). On top of that, the new beta versions with automatic brush subtraction and cutting make it incredibly, ludicrously easy to make complex shapes and designs (even if they'll be less optimized than someone doing it by hand), having entities use their actual models in the editor makes it very easy to keep track of what box is what, and the support for extra worldspawn/entity options used by new compilers (like tyrutil's extra light options) is good.
