I guess angling the shot, controlling the power of swing, then choosing the club according to wind direction, speed and the turf the ball is on and watching how well my decisions pan out is fun to me.

Yea, it's all just golf, but Mario Golf makes this simple. And it's Mario barely

Mario Golf and Tennis are games of their own kind. I wish we had more games that followed this style of gameplay. It's an immersive mix of sporting action and role play with its own setting, characters, narration, secrets, etc. Not an epic, but it doesn't need to be. I feel like it's enjoyable because it gives you a quick, yet meaningful satisfaction and it keeps you playing because of the character building mechanics. It introduces you to the reality of the game, instead of just imitating the real life (not that sports simulators are bad, however).

The Kunio-kun series.
There's not much when it comes to story, but by the time you end the first game, you end up liking the character. Then you see the same character with the same personality on several different games behaving the same way, it just makes the whole thing feel like a solid franchise.

Also worth playing:

-Turok 3: Shadow of oblivion

I don't think there is any other series of license games that got so lucky with it's music. A silly German comic got three different composer and all 3 of them are very competent.
