I finally picked up an SMS today, and now my Sega console family is just about complete. I currently only have three games: Outrun, Hang On, and Astro Warrior. What are some must haves for the system?

>> No.3353403

Master of Darkness is a good one that I've been playing lately. If you like Castlevania you'll like it.

Ninja Gaiden is another very good one.

Wonder Boy, Wonder Boy in Monster World and Wonder Boy III are all great. Wonder Boy III is my favourite Master System game.

The MS version of Columns is great.

Transbot is very fun.

Galaxy Force is good.

Then there are other great ones like Sonic 1, 2, and Chaos, Phantasy Star, Double Dragon, Streets of Rage, Renegade, Spy vs Spy, Alladin, Golden Axe, Teddy Boy, WWF etc.

Since this is a SMS thread, is there a reason to own one instead of using the genesis power base converter?

No. Unless you want to be able to use FM sound for some games if you buy the add on. But I think people have modded Master System Converters to have FM sound.
I use a Master System Converter to save space, but a Master System II is probably cheaper than the converter.

I've also got a Game Gear and own some games that are on Master System, namely Sonic 2 and Land of Illusion. I'm guessing the SMS versions of Sonic 1 and 2 are better because that's the platform they were designed for. The field of view is a bit too small on the GG version of Sonic 2, which causes unnecessary deaths.

Sonic Chaos and Triple Trouble were designed for the GG first and foremost so they don't have the FOV problems that I experienced with Sonic 2. I will probably pick up Sonic 1 and 2 for the SMS at some point.

At some point I'm going to pick up some Penguin Land cartridges to make reproductions of Golden Axe Warrior, and Phantasy Star with the Japanese FM audio. I'm very interested in doing an FM audio mod since that's a really distinct feature that the Game Gear doesn't have.

Most of the games people mentioned are really good, indeed. If I had to choose 3 they would be Kenseiden, Ninja Gaiden and Master of Darkness because they're challenging, their gameplay is spot on and they've got a more serious atmosphere.

Bonanza bros for SMS is a port I like and Cloud Master is a competent horizontal shooter.

Anyway, if you ever get your hands on a Light Phaser I recommend Rescue Mission, Gangster Town and Wanted!.

They might have the light phaser at one of my local shops. I know I've seen them for sale before, and I really love light gun games.

>No one mentions Wonder Boy in Monster LAND
Ok, it's not as faithful an arcade port as the PC Engine version, but it's still a damn fun game. Last level is pure bullshit, but still a fun game.

Also, try Choplifter and Air Rescue.

Ghost House is a tough but fun game. Feels pretty arcadey for a home game.

I bought it a few weeks ago and I still can't get past the first boss for the life of me.

Chaos and Triple Trouble on the other hand are pretty forgiving in terms of difficulty and I never felt like they were unfair. Sonic 2 really feels like a Master System port because it just doesn't work as well on the smaller screen, which is a shame because Sonic moves a lot faster than he does in the aforementioned games.

I seem to remember that the GG and SMS versions of the 8bit Sonic games being different. But I can't remember where I read that or how different they're supposed to be. I want to say level layout is somewhat different at times but I am really not sure. Could be I just heard THAT KID say something online and my dumbass thought it was true.

>> No.3363820

>>3363804
From what I understand the games are all more or less the same, except for the FOV. The FOV on the game gear is smaller than the SMS, which in Sonic 1 and 2 causes problems since they were designed around the SMS, whereas Chaos and Triple Trouble were designed around the GG.

The boss music is different. On GG, the first boss has an irregular pattern, and combined with the small screen its incredibly hard. The SMS one just has the balls come at the same trajectory repeatedly, making it laughably easy.

All the surprise deaths killed it for me. Sonic games are known for them, gotta go fast then gotta jump or stop to avoid spikes or enemies that appear suddenly. On the gg, imagine someone standing in front of the TV on the right side of the screen. It makes it nearly impossible to do avoid if you don't already know it's coming and react before seeing anything. It's possible, but it's very tedious and not enjoyable.

The SMS2 is kind of like a shitty budget version of the SMS. It only outputs an RF signal, it can't read cards, and I think it doesn't have an expansion port. It's also uglier but that's personal taste.

It is kind of different though, because there are a number of SMS games that won't play on the SMS2 since it has no card slot. You also can't use accessories like the 3D glasses (not that you'd have them anyway, but still), and it doesn't output RGB. It's more like comparing an original Gamecube with the later model where they removed the digital out jack, or how later PS3s removed backward compatability with PS2 games-- yeah, as a cost-cutting mesure I'm sure the savings added up, but if you're looking to buy one it makes for a less compelling package if you're looking for a used one.

What's more though, the original model SMS isn't rare, and in fact is more common than the model 2. Unless you're a collector there's not much reason to seek out the model 2.

>> No.3376061

The "S" in the Sega logo on my Master System is somewhat worn off, so it looks more like "bEGA" than "Sega." Maybe I should touch it up with a tiny brush and some of my fa/tg/uy paint.

>> No.3376342

>>3374610
all the western card games were also re-released as carts.

in pal regions sms2 is probably a lot more common than the first model as it found a niche as a budget console and saw about 200 more games than ntsc did - granted most of them are ports, but when they released them within a span of 2 or 3 years, beggers could indeed be choosers

You're right, the Master System was basically a budget Mega Drive, though it still got some great games of its own in that time.

The Master System was actually more successful after the third gen when it became a budget system than it was when it actually had a edge techwise over it's 8 bit competitors. I think Brazil is still manufacturing it, which would make it one of the longest supported platforms of all time.
