3352034 No.3352034 [Reply] [Original]

I just spent my weekend completing a leisurely FFIX run. I now want some other slow paced comfy games I can kick back on the sofa and take my time with.

Playing other Final Fantasy/JRPG games would probably be a bit overkill, as after spending 50 hours with FFIX, I'm pretty tired of random battles and dungeon grind. However that RPG sort of experience where I don't need to worry about reflexes, I can sit here with a couple youtube videos on in the background, eat my pop tarts with a spare hand while casually reading about stats and inventory items... That's the sort of thing I want to play. Something that I can invest a bit of time into and hold my attention, without being all about action.

Any ideas Anons? Preferably SNES or PS1 games as those are the easiest for me to get a hold of. Discuss the games you play when you just want to relax.

Also Digimon.

In fact Pokemon is one of the comfiest, most relaxing games I can think of.

Digimon World 1 is great. I recall having seen sequels at least up to 3, how do they compare to the original? Is the dying of old age mechanic still there? That's the thing I hated most in DW.

But yeah it's probably one of the comfiest games I've played, even though some areas like Overdell and Speed Zone unnerved me as a kid.

Sadly the sequels don't follow the mechanics of the first game. The second one is like an adventure/dungeon crawler, and the third one too. The only other game to be as close as the original game was the remake for the PSP and a recent one that came out for the PS4 last year, but that one has hella grinding and a cash shop I believe

FFIX is pretty easy if you already beat it a few times and don't want to do a massive completionist run. It's just a matter of equipping the right abilities for the boss battles and you can breeze through it with little/no grinding.

OP's post was made on Monday night though so it was probably more like 3/4 days.

Ogre Battle is one of the comfiest games I know.

It's technically an RTS (but you can pause any time to issue commands) and whenver two units meet, an RPG-style battle plays out. You don't have direct control over your units, but you can give them general orders (attack leader, attack weakest, etc.) and use tarot cards for special effects. Each character will attack a certain number of times and if everyone runs out of attacks without wiping out the enemy, the winner is whoever did the most damage.
So the main focus of the game is to decide how you want to advance with your units on each map and to make units with good composition. Since you don't have direct control over your characters in combat, unit composition is a huge deal, especially since most classes have different types of attacks if you put them in the front or back row. For example, a Paladin will attack 3 times if put in the front row or heal once per battle if put in the back row.

It's kinda hard to really explain how the game works, but it's fairly unique so give it a try.

Characters level up and can change classes once they hit certain stat/alignment requirements. For example, a fighter with good enough stats and a good alignment can become a Knight and later a Paladin, while one with an evil alignment can become a Barbarian and later a Terror Knight.

Every character can equip only one item and there are no generic items that you constantly have to update between chapters.

>> No.3358715

If you're gonna play Ogre Battle, look up how the game mechanics work, especially Alignment, or you might screw yourself over by overleveling.

It's more like pokemon stadium but with some pet-sim mechanics. You train them, feed them, and force them to fight in arena battles for shekels and rankings. You can also freeze them to combine with other monsters to make hybrids.

Is ff9 good? I've heard it is one of the best in the series, and I've played final fantasy 4-7. I'm hesitant to play the first three final fantasies because of the grinding, but I've beaten the first three dragon quests, so I'm probably fine

IX is the comfiest of them all in my opinion, it's like every environment in that game is designed to be tranquil and peaceful. But I guess that's mainly from like, a nostalgic old-school fantasy aspect rather than its individual merits. It had the retro FF aesthetic before retro FF was even really a thing.

I'd recommend you play the PS1 release of FF1 if you're gonna attempt it. It has an easymode that totally gets rid of the grinding, although it's really not as bad as people say- It depends on the party you take and how you choose to gear them.

The original Final Fantasy is a more western, old-school DnD style RPG than most of the weeb ass FF fanboys are used to, leaving it severely underrated in my opinion. It doesn't need an epic love story, it doesn't need some pseudo-philosophical bullshit about the meaning of friendship. It's just you, your four dudes, and enough money to buy them some pants and a potion or two if you're lucky, now go figure out how to save the fucking world. By the end you're a band of wandering bad-asses wielding ancient weapon and armour, so powerful that monsters who once struck terror into you now flee on sight. It's great.

I was planning on playing the first three final fantasies on psp. I was planning a party of two fighters, a white mage, and a black mage. My favorite final fantasy class is monk, but I've heard they are really squishy in ff1

>> No.3358918

>>3358903

The ultimate tank party is F,F,RM,RM.

You can't revive party members until the class change but you really shouldn't need to unless you get caught out by an insta-kill move. After a few levels you have pools and pools of magic to use for healing, buffs, etc, while your warriors will put out insane damage.

PSP is a pretty good port from what I hear, but be aware that most of the modern FF ports totally butcher the sprites and art style in general. Origins is definitely my favourite pot of the early FF games.

The art style is all "loli chibi kawaii" and stuff. All the characters look like they are children, when most are adults, and it has one inappropriately young character who has a crush on the lead character, like in the film Leon.

Well, is it even considered something bad? It's normal for young children to have a crush on adults in real life, even if they don't have any sexual drive or even know what the heck that is. It's innocent, nothing dirty about it.
