Alien Soldier
>I love boss rushes
>perfect, mobile, technical and still unmatched controls
>smooth as fucking hell
>the difficulty is spot on
>it's the perfect pick up and play
>incredible graphics even to this day

Contra Hard Corps and Mega Man X (if you consider it a run&gun, which I don't see why you wouldn't given there isn't much platforming compared to the NES ones) are my follow-ups

You mean Green, the one with 7 god damn forms when playing on expert mode?

Man that shit was really hard. But memorable as hell, and it felt so god damn good after finally beating him. Few bosses today that can replicate that feeling of satisfaction.

Sunset Riders doesn't have belt-scroller controls though, you can only move left and right.

There are some sections that let you jump onto the upper portion of the level but that's just standard platforming like any other run'n'gun.

The only thing that really sets Sunset Riders apart is the pacing, it's more of a calculated and precise game. I think of it as a walk'n'gun.
