I played it today, good stuff. I liked how the game used the grab mechanics in different ways each level, in a puzzle-ish style. And the whole thing is just gorgeous.

>>3332443
I enjoyed 2 and 3. I felt the first game was somewhat limited (probably because I played the sequels first). I don't usually appreciate pre-rendered 3D graphics, but this series is an exception; it's got an impressive attention to detail.

>>3337037
I kinda feel like playing this game, it looks like it might be interesting. I've heard that it gets boring after a while, though (not much variety).

Ristar has its own charm. Sure it's not as fast as the Sonic games, and the game is pretty easy, but I think its cute to play and the grabbing mechanics are somewhat interesting to play with.

3rd dkc does get a lot of hate on here (i would imagine because of the how i say.. modern level design? doesnt feel as smooth as dkc.. hard to explain)

>Sure it's not as fast as the Sonic games
That's a good thing IMO. Having a slower pace allows for a better level design where you actually have to think before making a move. It's just like you said, the grabbing mechanics are a quite interesting feature, but in Sonic you have... nothing. Except for the speed of course, but sincerely going too fast doesn't really make a game good.

>and the game is pretty easy
I actually find it harder than Sonic games (where you can just keep collecting the rings to withhold the extra hit point). Also, Ristar has a secret super hard mode, in which you can't take any hits (I don't know if Sonic games has a similar feature and I've only played the first two of them).

>3rd dkc does get a lot of hate on here
Mostly because of the visuals and soundtrack, apparently. While I do agree that it doesn't compare to the other games in these aspects, they're not bad in 3 either. And then again, the sequels had a lot more to offer than DKC1 with the improved mechanics, more variety and verticality to the levels, the secret worlds, better inspired boss fights, etc. The third one had the map exploration just as well. These things add to the overall presentation of a game. Not that I think the first game is bad, I just found it a bit limited.

>modern level design? doesnt feel as smooth as dkc
Not sure what you mean exactly, but the level design is definitely made to favor a slower gameplay and it doesn't have Diddy. Now, I'd take Diddy over Kiddy any day, he's the most responsive and precise character of them all. I'm just not sure about the 'modern' thing.

Hong Kong '97 is Snes Touhou with the best music on the platform and of course, it's a bullet hell if you're into those. Now go kill some ugly fuckin' reds!

Good points. I find the Ristar character a bit hard to maneuver with his hands because he can only attack in 8 directions, so you have to move the character in the position where he is allowed to attack the opponent. It gets a bit difficult especially during the water level when you have enemies respawning in certain sections of the room and you're looking around to destroy the portal that allows the infinite enemies to respawn. Aside from that the gameplay is pretty easy though, and gaining health isn't that as long as you mentioned you think before attacking. There's even some parts where attacking will harm you. I like that they added that in the game, like those exploding beetles in the bushes, or a bomb? that was in the little hole you would grab to give you health or bonus points. Sonic isn't necessarily a thoughtless game not that you say it is, it's just straight platforming that involved a fast character probably to market the blast-processing power. All the bosses and enemy encounters feel the same in both games, but some enemies utilize Ristar's ability that makes the game feel a bit distant from Sonic for example the snake in the first level.

As for DKC3, I think the main concern is the level design, not the pre-rendered graphics or the soundtrack. For one, the graphics seem to be a bit more realistic, but they added for a fresh change in the series. Some levels remind of their later work, like the sewer levels and wood house? what do you call those remind me of BK and CBFD for some reason. It doesn't really fit the characters though, and the soundtrack is a bit lackluster from what I remember. It's a lovely game though, really feels like summer when you play it at times obviously not the winter levels. If anything, I would say DKC3 is like the Kirby's Dream Land 3 of the series. Most notable for the art direction. 1/2

The verticality of the 3rd game feels different from the other games in the series, but I felt it's a hit or mess with some people. I feel like it is good and bad because while it offers different ways to adverse through the level, perhaps it was meant to compliment the characters abilities. I forgot what baby kong would do but anyways. What I mean by modern is that it feels more like a 3d platforming game. What I mean by that is, you have more switches and levels that combine both swimming and normal platforming in the levels. Correct me if I'm wrong there are also sections where you find bosses at the end of the levels, not levels specifically to face the boss alone. There's also that hub you can maneuver that doesn't feel as traditional. Some levels feel more gimmicky involving less difficulty rather just completing the level instead of using your skills to overcome your enemies and obstacles. I was watching a video to refresh my memory because it's been years since I've touched this game and I saw a part where there are two enemies that are impossible to kill without hurting yourself unless you play as an elephant and suck in a TNT barrel to explode the enemy. That's just lazy and doesn't play like how the other DKC games played.
