Links dead.

Also on Win7 64 bit cant skip intro after launching WoG trough the HD mod.

Can do this normally by editing some registry entries and running the WoG exe as administrator and as a windowsXP process.
However if I try to run it trough the HD mod it gives me error 740.

I love to take my time to strenghten my forces slowly & explore ;_;

Anyhow, concerning demon farming - I didn't quite grasp the idea of it in a previous thread, sort of like a reverse Necromancy?

>You kill the stack you cast it on, instantly. You cannot resurrect it later (although see the above trick for pit lords)
>You then can use that "power" to resurrect a different stack. Assuming you have Expert Fire, you can res (Spell power+Health of unit killed+10)*# of units sacrificed.
>So it's best to use on 1st tier units to ressurect higher tier ones. The most commonly seen method is with the Infernals, who tend to get fire magic and sacrifice in their mage guilds. You have your Efreet Sultans run off and attack a shooter, whereupon the rest of the enemy army surrounds them and kills them, getting burned with the ire shield in the process.
>Sacrifice your imp stack to revive the Efreet, and then Pit lord the dead imps into demons. Voila. You've hurt him and actually strengthened your army.

Pit lords special raises demons from a dead friendly stack, the number of demons depends on the size of the killed stack and the size of the Pit Lord stack doing the raising. You get to keep those demons if they survive the battle, so that's the idea: figure out the optimal number of imps your Pit Lords can raise, put that many imps into a separate stack and get them killed in a battle, then raise demons. Repeat until out of fodder to sacrifice and you've effectively replaced shitty tier 1 creatures with shitty tier 4 demons.

Yeah, the charm from Heroes 3 is important to me too.

Anyway, Eador is sorta similar to HoMM, but has some major differences. Each army is led by a hero, but the hero fights in the battles (like HoMM4, but it works properly in this game). Level ups work the same, you get offered a few random skills, which might be new skills or improvements to old ones. There are 4 hero classes, and at lvl 10 each can choose an advanced class (4 to choose from for each of the basic classes) that grants some unique bonus. Units are individuals instead of stacks, and each unit can level up and choose little bonuses (like +1 hp/morale/stamina, sometimes they also get offered special skills).

The battles have more depth, terrain is really important and you can make much better use of it. For instance, a ranged unit will get +1 range when standing on a Hill hex. Swampy hexes take more movement points to go through. Forest hexes provide more ranged def. Etc.

The adventure map is probably the biggest difference. It's divided into fairly large provinces. It's sorta like Civ in that you move your armies from province to province, instead of running around freely like in HoMM. But one really cool thing is that each province can have a lot of stuff in it. You select your hero, and then can bring up a list of all locations on the province and choose one to go to. Each province will also have a population and mood. And you can build buildings on provinces, but only 3 each. Your starting province is your capital, and that's where you do your proper construction. There are a LOT more buildings compared to HoMM.

Oh, and then there are plenty of random events that appear from time to time. Most of them are fairly tricky and will bend you over the first time you get them, I could give examples but don't wanna spoil anything.

Anyway, I'd suggest either pirating or buying Eador: Genesis, it's the 2d one and available for $6 from GOG.

1) dragon utopias -- how often in games do you even get to these? seems to me that 90% of the time, by the time you have forces capable of defeating a couple dozen neutral dragons without suffering significant losses, you should just be marching on your opponents instead.

The thing with the HOMM3 designs is that they are... functional. It's like how you'd expect a medival army to look like. And not just for Castle, but for all the other factions too. Their clothes, their weapons, they all looked believable and realistic.

In HOMM5, even tier 1 units have as much equipment and clothes as tier 7 units from HOMM3. And for higher level units, there are hundreds of pointless ornaments and artifacts everywhere, which are not functional or may even be a hinderance in combat. They are useless and expensive gadgetry in a time of war on mass-recruited soldiers.
Some units have more stuff to them than your main hero.

Now I'm not saying that they don't look cool (some of the designs are awesome), it's just that they don't belong in a war scenario.

And of course there are some units which go into so much extremes that it's just not funny. This dude for example is something I'd expect seeing in Spawn, not in HoMM.

Following Scenario:
I'm playing with Inferno on Peaceful Ending. I sent my main exploring the map and was able to conquer a Stronghold Town at this very turn. I have not built the Forsaken place yet nor is the Behemtoh Lair in the Stronghold Town built (all other creature dwellings are built in both towns). However, a necro hero is about to attack my Inferno Town. He has:
9 Vampire Lords
2 Black Knights
5 Liches
21 Archers
23 Gogs
67 Skeletons
Some Wights

How should I react? I wasn't able to defeat him with the creatures I'd bought, although I still could sell some resource in order to buy more creatures. If so, which should I buy? I can provide the save game if anybody wants to try. I also considered building the Behemoth Lair and capturing the Inferno Town later.

Anyhow, I basically just want to know how you would deal with such a situation.

Get all Gogs -> max_you_can_get(Devils) -> max_you_can_get(Sultans) -> some(Pit Fiends) -> some_more(Cerberi) -> at least 1 of both Horned Demons and Imps just as fodder / to take retaliation.

You have a Castle right?

So eliminate his catapult first, so the Dead Knights can't get inside, then use your melee to kill the Vampire Lords&Wights that will fly over your walls to kill your ranged units. Make sure you engage the Dead Knights last. Kill off Liches first, then Gogs, then Archers (since they will likely have horrible morale). If his catapult is down / your walls are still up, or mostly up, and you've managed to significantly reduce his ranged units and kill the fliers, you might just win the battle. Try to hire some cheap spellcasting hero too perhaps.

-> Inferno doesn't have Crag Hack. Inferno has no good heroes at all.
>- Stronghold has Crag Hack, who's one of the best heroes in the game (THE best if you want raw killing power). And one or two other usable heroes as well.
-> Inferno has an absolutely horrible level 4 and level 5 unit (even with farming, they're just ultra bad). It's only really good units are upgraded Cerberi and Efreets. Devil Lords are nice with the Teleport and No Retaliation - but you're unlikely to get them before your opponents get their own T7 units. Imps are completely useless if you don't use the Imp spec. hero. Magogs have a nice ability, but unfortunately, it hurts your units too and their stats are kind of shit.
>- Hobgoblins are much better stat wise than Imps, usable even without the specialized hero. Wolf Riders (the 2x strike version) are extremely good (possibly better than Castle's Champions if you use them wisely), although they're kind of glass canons. Orcs are solid and cheap, they slow you down as fuck but if you get Ogre Magis, you might as well drag those with you, shit in comparison to other T3s but still better than Inferno's shooters. Speaking of OMs they are great to use with the above mentioned, since they're just as slow but are a great meat shield and they can cast Bloodlust with reasonable efficiency. Thunderbirds are just great, perhaps not as good fliers as sultans, but you can rush them to make neutral clearing extremely easy. Cyclops Kings are a vital addition to your army with their wall killing capability, sure, they cost a lot, and are overpriced, but still good. Behemots are, once again, glass canons of their tier. Not as tactically useful as Devils, you need to manage them much more but if you do, they can tear other T7s apart, unlike Devils.

If you want an amusing and satisfying way of learning how to become good at combat (specifically, using the Fortress faction) I have a good scenario for that. It's meant to be played on Impossible and if you win, you have an Archangel / 430+ score guaranteed.

You play as Fortress, starting with one underdeveloped town against Stronghold with 3 starting towns, Inferno & Tower with 1 starting town (but both of them extremely developed / they have their Grail structures) and Castle with 2 starting towns, all of them allied against you. And all factions, including yours have all resource buildings available for them, there's loads and loads and loads of stat giving buldings (for you and them, but since they're free to wander around they're going to have likely 3x as much as you) and there's lots of artifact stuff and so on.

However, you're protected from getting rushed by them with a blue one-time gate that only you can unlock.

+ To avoid frustration, there's guaranteed Shackles of War that you can safely get and you will have the most important secondary skills for Fortress available as well as the few good spells you can get from Fortress town. And an another Fortress town waiting for you to conquer.

It's a bit muchkinish but still, it's a bit of a challenge to beat four stacked factions with one (less-or-more stacked depending on how good you do in your own territory) faction.

And of course there's some balance rules, like, no shitty items no one can use (Necromancy ones), no shitty secondary skills available during levelup (Eagle Eye, Scholar...) and no game-breaking items / spells either (Dimension Door / Fly / Flying Boots that could allow you to just turtle forever).

With high attack and expert Ballista skill, the ballista can take out 1-2 tier 7 units in one turn, even with distance penalty (it does two shots each at double damage, so 4x attack power). You can also control it, so it doesn't de-blind enemy stacks. (and I chuckle every time I see "ballista takes a defensive stance")
This makes it a very useful thing to have up to mid-game, and still an annoyance at late game - at that point, cost is less an issue and the benefits are still useful.

Artillery gives you control of the castle towers in a siege, not the ballista. It also buffs ranged damage a LOT.

You don't get berserk on that map due to using Fortress.

On that map, use expert slow, and then keep blinding every stack until only one remains, then snipe those away with lizard warriors (due to the external dwellings you should have 200-300 of them, which can do serious damage), and when they get close destroy them with Hydras (no retaliation) and Mighty Gorgons (death stare). Do not send the rest of your troops in cause they don't have enough HP to survive.
After you killed the first stack, you may want to buff your troops with bless, prayer, maybe stone skin or bloodlust.

You also have 2 external Gorgon dwellings which you should harvest each week, because in big numbers those bulls are the evilest units in the game. They make it easy to clear the underground treasury too, since it's mainly guarded by dragons.

picture related.

>>385469
>I'm glad I got the lion's shield of courage from it, though now I'm scared to go out as I see all these heroes with 50 attack and stupid things like that, running around.
Don't be scared, just save the game before you open it.

It feels just so, so, so amazing to beat all of their armies, which have superior numbers and which (usually) come at you consecutively, one after another, every turn.

Perhaps it can be occasionally not winnable, if let's say, the worst stack happens to have Orb of Inhibition or something like that, but you can beat that too if it's the first or second you face (=when your army is at its best).

Once again, picture related. Before I engaged this guy, I killed the Red fucker's main (~25 Black Dragons + every other Dungeon unit maxed) - that was really easy - then the Green fucker's main (~32 Archangels + every other Castle unit maxed ) - that one cost me half of my Chaos Hydras and all of my (almost 100) Mighty Gorgons because I was careless about his hundreds of Crusaders. Of course, I engaged both of those on the field, like a man. And then, ironically, the biggest stack gets taken out with the cheapest units (took out my Hydras so they wouldn't die for nothing).

Then all that remained was the Orange guy, who split his army to attack me from both sides, I lol-killed the weaker stack in the open and dealt with the 80 Naga / 32 Titan stack in a similar fashion as the pictured battle.

It's really surprising how dumb the AI's preferences when it comes to spellcasting are. Both of them had Cure, Dispel AND Anti-Magic, but the former didn't use it at all, and the latter used it only once.

>> No.387342

And, really, once you survive all these fights with your main hero, it's nothing but a stroll through the countryside. I suggest you either get the Tower / Dungeon town (they pay the most due to them having Grail structures pre-built but are in a kind of shitty position) or the two Castle towns (because stacking Archangels +Marksmen +whatnot; and they're much easier to defend and you get free Stables every week).

And, before you conquer the Stronghold town, there is a bit of an optional fight - you probably noticed the Arena just north of your starting position in the Stronghold territory. Well, it's guarded by a random level 6 unit that starts out at 1000.

There's also 15 Azure Dragons in the 'Dragon Cave' between Erathia and Tatalia but the computer is occasionally able to kill them.

Perhaps it's not a priority to get Wisdom maxed, but Basic Wisdom offers you some nice level 3 spells:

Earth:
>Animate Dead, Anti-Magic, Earthquake
Water:
>Forgetfulness, Teleport

From level 4, if the travel spells are banned, there's still Resurrect (because I hate it when I'm cleaning up towns/armies that are clearly below me, but they still manage to get some of my favorite units down), Prayer, Berserk, Counterstrike.

And for level 5... well... Implosion.

It should be evident that it makes less sense to invest into Wisdom if you don't get higher Knowledge / Spellpower. If you're, say a Stronghold Might hero with 20 Mana and 3 Spellpower, you might be content with just casting Expert Slow / Expert Haste / Expert Bless.

I rearranged the units but I've still got problems.

There's this guy, some guy with 147 black dragons who keeps casting air elemental a hundred times, and one hero with 97 titans and a bunch of tower units.

I don't have a solution to this, I just can't keep enough of my forces alive for rounds 2 and 3. If I can get through these 3 mostly in tact then I've basically won the game.

I don't know what to do, they're just too fast and the first round spell makes all the difference.
I've another level 23 hero with armorer specialty and tons of defense but he's not nearly as good with spells.

always have a second hero traveling behind the main, so if you have fight the dragons you would let that hero have all the low tier stacks.
maybe leaving some single stacks of dragon flies behind to trigger retaliation.
the best unit against any tier 7 is the mighty gorgon and hydras cause an ai bug (if you stand next to an ally dragon, the one with the initiative wont attack you)
so using mighty gorgons, hydras and dragon flies in 6 stacks to avoid the breath attack would likely reduce your losts

Castle town units in homm2 are fun to play, though I can't really say the same about homm3

Probably the gist of the problem is that you waited out some week(s) gathering your army. That is one of the worst things you can do on impossible (doesn't matter what kind of map it is) because they will always get more units than you.

I find that the key to beating A.I.s on impossible is to get a good hero for your main stack - and once he's reasonably prepared and there's no more experience left to get without entering the enemy's territory, well, then you have to attack them with what you have.

A lot of the maps are literally impossible on the highest difficulty (especially the one's with 8 enemy factions where you always have to deal with at least 3 huge stacks at a time). If you want to win a normal scenario on impossible, your best best is to play the (Allied) version.

>have 0 gold
>ally sends me 42k
>he would appreciate some Mercury

So TL;DR - you cannot stagnate on Impossible maps.

Man, they even cleared the ~3000 level 6 units near the Stronghold's arena...

goblin - standard tier 1 cannon fodder
wolf riders - fast but squishy, upgrade to get the double attack but make sure they always get the first hit
orc - standard shooter but kinda shitty
ogres - solid, can take and dish out a beating, ogre magi can cast bloodlust so worth upgrading IMO
roc - thunderbirds are great
cyclops - nice high level shooters, but the dwelling costs 20 crystal
behemoth - biggest advantage is you can easily get them in week 1 (another reason why its not worth starting with them)

I've only ever tried on on 2, but I'm about 90% sure it's not random as the few maps I tried it on (including that one second to last scenario mission for the crown with both sides) it wasn't random at all and I was able to just dig up the spot I remembered it being on from doing the obelisks in a previous game.

>> No.400617

>>400562

When creating a map, you can choose to place a grail or not. And the grail item can also be given a random radius to appear in. So some possible combinations are:

a) Map designer placed obelisks but no grail, in which case the grail is placed randomly somewhere on the map (if you're designing a map this way, you really need to make sure every area on the map is accessible and, for fairness, that the obelisks really are all over the map because the grail might appear right outside someone's starting town)

b) You have obelisks and a specific grail location, which will be the same every time the map is played (which is a bad idea since players who have already played the map and know where the grail is won't need to visit the obelisks.)

c) Obelisks and a grail location with a random radius, big enough that someone would need to have a dedicated hero digging for months even if they knew approximately where it is.

d) A grail (with a specific location) and no obelisks, which might work if you have other hints at the location, e.g. signs or event texts.

So, for the scenario you're describing, it's quite probable that the grail was set to appear in a certain location or area, and therefore when you replayed the map it was in the same, or a very close, location as the previous time.

I get Elixir of Life on almost every random XL map i play. I've only gotten Angelic Allience once on a random map. I got Power of the Dragon Father more often than it and that one requires more artifacts.

I once managed to get the Angelic Alliance and once Bow of the Sharpshooter from random artifacts.

Getting the former almost felt like cheating. The second is really nice too though - especially when you got a huge stack of ranged troops and are fighting mostly melee units (preferably without hero, but with hero is fine too) who block your ranged troops in the corner - you blind the melee troops surrounding the stack - and use them as a much, much longer lasting wall (if you have good spell power) whilst firing at everything else, and killing them last. The artifact allows you to shoot even if you're in melee range of another unit, fyi.

Use ERA. It has WoG as a mod, and I don't remember it crashing once.

If the DL speed is shit, try the torrent. Also inviting everyone to help seeding it.

I can play weeks without losing 1 unit. Completely fucks up the balance, really.

I won soem Realm of Chaos FFA with Rampart. It is fucking hard and it necessitate a bit of luck, but it can be done.

Also, i had Mephala (Female Tazar) with rushed dendroids so it certainly helped alot.

in my experience, you're far more likely to find one on a shipwreck survivor. although I have made a few by finding most of the pieces and buying stuff from black market/artifact merchants

But conquering the first town is not hard. Everyone can do that. The problem is that once you go to surface, you have to fight two overpopulated towns you just cannot hope to match.
