Can we pls have a PC Enginge thread? I love this console so much, I wish it had been received better in the United States. I've been playing a lot of Download, PC Kid, and strip fighter ii. What are your favorite games? Memories?

If you have to ask, no, we will not have a PC Engine thread.

I don't. I loved played CD awesomeness while the muhrio fanbois were fapping to artist conceptions of the SNES.

I wish it was less expensive to get into.

PC Engine flopped in America because Burgers have shit taste in videogames.

See: N64 selling more than Saturn.

Without NA the N64 would have been a Saturn-level flop.

Something has always bothered me; the PC Engine is tiny and yet the NA version, the Turbografx, is like twice the fucking size.

So whats under the hood? Is that all dead space in there?

I just got a stock PCE, one controller, and a Turbo EverDrive for ~$140. That's like the absolute cheapest way to get into the US/JP HuCard Library. I decided not to fuck with CDs for now since I can't read any of the JRPGs I would want to play. Overall I haven't regretted the investment.

Did Saturn sell more than N64 in Europe?

Anyway, your post seems kinda shitposty.

PC Engine is great, but it had little support outside of Japan, and couldn't compete against Sega and Nintendo.
In Japan, PC Engine beat the Megadrive.

CD still has plenty of shooters, and Rondo of course

The Ys series is worth playing, and the Xanadu games are close to being done translated

FTFY. I have about ten. Paid $5 each. $20 for IFU+CDs. $25 for Super CDs.
Obviously did not buy on eBay. Not even amazon.co.jp.

I actually just got a PC-Engine Express and a Turbo Everdrive.

Good place to start?

I like action games, I like RPG's to an extent. I'm willing to give anything a shot really.

Might look into getting a CD at some point.

Why would you not get the regular console? Sell it and get a coregrafx

>> No.3314932

>>3313283
what bothers me is the fcc required the rf shielding, but the turbo express which is the same thing was fine being so small. They even crammed the guts of a controller and a screen into it. They could have made a console smaller than the PCE.

What REALLY grinds my gears is they wasted that extra space. A multitap would have been a great way to utilize this. Would have been the first 5 player system as well I assume.

Finished playing through this in one sitting an hour ago, though on the PS3 via PSN/Emulation. It plays similar to Gauntlet, but with minor RPG elements, fun for a one-off playthrough.

The Turbo Duo is sex but the prices on eBay make me weep.

If I ever get into PCE / TG16 collecting I could make due with a PC Engine Duo, but those are still pretty expensive. Since I'm into modding and repairs I'd rather get one that needs new caps and save some money by repairing and modding it myself, but it will have to wait until either A) I see one at a steal of a price, or B) I find myself blessed with a great new job that lets me afford to pay eBay prices.

How exactly did you beat it? Most people I know can't get passed the second boss or so.

>> No.3315045

>>3315027
It wasn't a very difficult game IMO, I played as the witch character. I guess what helped me get through was making an effort to keep my white/black magic potions stocked up (every time you beat a boss, go back to the beginning town and talk to the king, he'll give you some potions), and digging up info on the internet about what item powerups and stats do.

A thread on GoyFAQs helped out a good bit, some guy on there broke it down on stats, powerups, what spells do exactly (even the digi manual included was vague at points), etc.

>> No.3315046

>>3315045
Oh right, and one major factor I forgot. The PSN emulation version has 5 save slots you can save to, so effectively save states. Without them, you have to rely on passwords to get you back to where you left off, it keeps track of your level and I think HP, but gives you a generic chunk of stats that seems appropriate for your level (IE you respawn weaker than you left off). Besides all that, the game's on some bullshit sometimes, fucking blue fireballs/will o wisps spawning right as you get closer to a enemy generator insta-killing you.

>> No.3315051

>>3314932
it was one of many poor marketing decisions that killed the console in the west.

on another note: i have an original pce, and a 'for parts' coregrafx. those are some of the best console designs ever, in my opinion. that said, my duo-r is what's hooked up to the monitor 24/7.

the turbo express doesn't generate an RF signal to output to a TV, which is why it doesn't require RF shielding.

Competition between this and Last Alert for the worst voice-acting on the system (honorable mention: Valis 2/3). NEC had to have blown all of their money when they hired professionals to voice Ys and had nothing left when they were developing the bargain-basement shit from Telenet.

Multiple controller ports and RCA jacks without needing an adapter would've been nice too. It's kinda pathetic that Nintendo, who had no background in consumer electronics like NEC, had enough sense to add them to the NES when the Famicom was RF only.

Aside from a few Working Designs stuff, practically everything worth playing on the TG16/Duo was localized by NEC Home Electronics in the US or Turbo Technologies Inc.
