Honestly, old quake just looks better. I've yet to see a modified engine that looks better. It's always half-assed and takes away atmosphere with either improper textures or silly lighting.

For once I'd like to see a quake engine mod / remake that actually takes into account the game's original atmosphere, which was nothing short of spectacular.
