Majority of modern shmups utilize 3D graphics, but use tired 2D gameplay.

Back in the late 90's we got stuff like Radiant Silvergun and Einhander, which spiced up the traditional shmup formula with 3D cinematics, and in the mid 2000's we got Senko no Ronde which mixed shmups with the fighting game genre. Devs got presented with so much new stuff to work and experiment with but nope, fuck that, imma play it safe and use the same good old traditional formula which has been dominating the genre for 25 years now.

Games from 20 and 10 years ago were more innovative than majority of today's attempts at the genre.
