Great thread, OP. Very informative.

Every last goddamn home version of this game was a pile of fail and AIDS.

Besides "Boo-urns", this is probably my favourite Simpsons moment.

You think they could have at least done decent versions on 16-bit platforms like the Amiga because actually the arcade game wasn't 16-bit (used twin 6809s).

I love arcade Double Dragon to death, but NES DD is pure port kino and in some ways I prefer it to the arcade version

Most people wonder why NES DD had no two player mode. This was only the second Technos game developed for the Famicom and the programmers were too green to attempt it.

It's barely a port though. More of a reworking.
>No 2P co-op, so they made one of the Lee brothers a bad guy and switch their hair colors for some reason.
>Level designs are completely different. Instead of one long outdoor map and an indoor map for the Black Warriors' hideout, each stage (mission) is a mix of outdoor and indoor areas, with the exception of Mission 2 (which is just one outdoor area).
>You get to use all your moves from the start in the arcade, whereas your forced to grind for them on the NES. Also, the fact that the NES only has two action buttons means that you have to press AB for jumps.
>Mr. T Abobo and the Lee Brother Wannabe were cut from the NES version, but the NES version adds Chin the Chinese Kung-Fu Guy in their place.
>Marian is a slut in the arcade who goes for the last guy standing, whereas on the NES she's faithful to Billy.

Best version.

These games seemed to be the shit back then. They crossed over into Battle Toads and River City Ransom even. I wonder why it fell under the radar so hard.

You're only posting it to start a retro/not retro flamewar but that was actually a really great remake.

Because most beat-em-up fans moved on to fighting games and FPS's during that era.

Why were the computer versions of this game so bad? Even the Amiga version sucks. It's basically the DOS version with better graphics, and it still has no music.

I found this pretty cool video that shows all of the different versions of Double Dragon (except the Atari Lynx version) back to back. It's pretty insane how many systems the game was ported to. Obviously, some are better than others.

The Genesis version seems to be one of the best ports. It's overall pretty faithful to the arcade but it runs much faster without any slowdown.

The arcade versions are pretty much all garbage. A lot of us have nostalgia for the NES port because so many of us had it, but compared to some of the other console ports and the arcade original, it was actually a pretty bad port. If you're going to port Double Dragon with no co-op you might as well call it "Single Dragon." The new boss areas were a pretty cool addition, though, even if they don't make up for the other shortcomings.

It's not bad but the lack of co-op is just stupid. It plays smoother and looks better than the Master System version, but many people prefer the Master System version just because it has the 2 player co-op. The absence of 2 player on the NES version is just lazy. The game is called Double Dragon and the system has 2 controller ports.
