Why is this game so highly regarded? It was just a The Great Escape clone. A great one sure, but it's not like it invented the wheel or something.

Actually it is quite open for its time. It brings together elements from rpgs and point & click together.

Just like The Great Escape. But don't mind me, I'm a Spaniard myself and I actually like the game. I guess I'm just tired of underages talking about La abadía del crimen like it was some sort of revolutionary holy grail that put all the other software from that era to shame.

I thought the main reason why this game has some sort of fame is because it's basically The Name of the Rose : The Video Game, not because of the gameplay or anything revolutionary.

I had this in the 90s for DOS on a compilation CD-ROM of OperaSoft games. Never got too far in it.

Australian here, I had never ever heard of this until I was looking for games to play on my msx2 and found the english translation. The game is pretty stubbornly trial and error let's be honest but it has some amazing systems in it and is amazing considering the technology it originally ran on.
