The sequel Terranigma has darker aspects to it, but that game is darker on average.

Angels committing suicide, playing Russian roulette against a man with a family, burning that assassin dude alive and watching him crawl, the slave shit, inca ship skellingtons, Seth turning into a sea monster, game slapping you in the face with harsh reality like the shipwreck scene, hamlet, etc etc

Not OP but I would even go as far as to say Soul Blazer is the "darkest" of all three.

Breath of Fire IV was pretty fucked up at times, even the "primary villain" only irredeemably became one after he got shot with a soul cannon literally powered by torturing the one woman he cared for.

Also instead of saving the princess you find her as an undying yet sane legless half-abomination, all caused by the experiments of a guy who ultimately gets away with the whole thing. In the end she begs his lover who spent the whole game searching for her to mercy kill her.

Take for example how elle became the daughter of the king.

I miss games like Illusion of Gaia (Time for EU) and Terranigma. They had a certain type of atmosphere that I somehow can't find in any other modern game.

The thing with Alundra was that there were no unnecessary NPCs, everyone got their moment on stage. Everyone had their moment under the spotlight allowing you to really bond with or really hate that character before the game commanded monkeys to feast on their entrails. People die left and right including the main character's mother, you discover tons of little fucked up facts about most of the people you meet, even the villains(one was killed for being a huge perv apparently), another only had power because the girl accompanying had blood that gave him those powers(he was also the only thing keeping her in check, when he dies she goes apeshit and damn near rips a hole in time itself.) It's loose and mostly fan speculation. But the whole idea of Yuna creating monsters and gods and shit, and so he possible created Myria, making 3 before 4.

But then I've also heard good reasoning for 4 leading into Dragon Quarter. The world is turning into desert, poisoned by the Carronade hexes, monsters are multiplying, fast forward years and years later and everyone has moved underground.

I see them all as individual games, myself. There's no real point to be gained from trying to make them into a cohesive timeline (see: Zelda timeline nerds).

Oh come on know you can work it out way easier than that bull shit. It's not like they ever tried to imply that the Ryu's and Nina's where the same guy.

the only real recurring character is Deis and based on her lack of a tangible body in 4 it's safe to say she didn't get nagafied yet. Witch is something that can also be easily blamed on Yuna.

One of your former allies and the main character's closest friends, Arvis, betrays Sigurd (the MC), leading you and all of your units into a trap. You also find out that Sigurd's wife, who had been taken prisoner earlier in the story, has had her memories erased, and is now married to Arvis, who is her brother. Arvis then has Sigurd and all of the characters you've come to love in the game so far executed, and the second half of the game takes place seventeen years later, and follows the children of your characters from the first half.

As far as the Zelda conversation goes, none of the games are related to each other. I take each one in a vacuum as a different story entirely. They're a collection of tales, similar in ways and different in others, like creation stories from around the world this is a hero story that changes depending on its origin.

An islander culture will obviously have more sailing involved in their story, a feudal state has more princesses and gallantry, a post-industrial society has independent freedom and trains, etc. Just my 2 rupees.

Exile for Genesis rings clear as one of the darkest RPGs I've noticed from the 90's.

Seriously, this shit got real fucking grim, and even though you kill the big thing that orchesetrated everything, everything is just fucked.

Your childhood friend/potential lover is torn apart by demons, you are stuck wandering in the past, find out all religions are a farce, there is no ultimate artifact that will save the world, everyone you know and tried to protect back in the present will be murdered horribly in the crusades. You forever wander the desert lamenting the rest of your days knowing war will forever be a thing.

Of note is that this happens on screen - they're led through a procession, betrayed, then mages drop meteors on your army until there's nothing left - then your main character tries to go toe to toe with the guy who betrayed him, and he gets blown the fuck up.

This happens via the game's usual battle system - not just a cutscene.
