If you look past the retarded, Saturday morning cartoon plot, then the game still holds up pretty well. The job system is as fun and fleshed out as ever and the overall pacing and design of the game is really tight. The GBA version is probably the way to go if you're looking to replay the game. The Steam version is functional, but the graphics and art direction in that version are butt-ugly.

>> No.3290187

I still think its got the best version of the job system in any FF game. There's loads of room for experimentation and taking silly party combinations to the limit. Its honestly one of the most purely fun games in the entire series.

The main theme is also one of my favorites in the series. The music as a whole feels like the last of "old FF" and really sends off that style well. I think its totally worth a replay.

I like the SNES version myself because its what I originally played, but I've heard that the GBA version is the best.

Oh get real, dude. You got stuff like a pirate princess, an evil tree trying to destroy the world, a talking turtle making pizza jokes, and slapstick antics out the ass. It's a really dumb story and it's not everyone's cup of tea when it comes to RPGs. But like I said, it doesn't detract from the game that much.

I think the sound fonts in the GBA version are actually better than the SNES version, but they're subject to the radio hiss that's unavoidable with the GBA sound hardware, so the songs sound noticeably worse:

Yeah, and people are all "Final Fantasy VI had such a deep and dark plot with none of that silly nonsense"

Remember that beautiful scene in the opera house? Remember the pissed off octopus monster that rampages in and shits all over it because he wants revenge? Remember suplexing a train?

Final Fantasy has always had some bizarre cartoony charm to it.

If it is the first FF you played, then it will hold up better than any of the other FF games. Best gameplay for a JRPG easily, the job system is godly. Want to make a thief who casts black magic? A knight using a thunder-powered broadsword? sure. A whip-wielding dancer? Whatever you are into. A berserker monk? oh yes. You can even be pokemon trainers, or a ninja dual wielding war hammers, or a medicine-making samurai.

I wish more RPGs allowed that kind of customizations.

Some people criticize the story, but I like how light-hearted it is. Even when you have the bad guy released and sitting on his throne, your army pushed back, the evil wizards army shielded by an impenetrable force field, and your party thrown into the other side of the world - you still have the characters drinking wine and reminiscing about the good times, instead of moping about committing suicide (and then failing at committing suicide) like in FF6.

Best version is the GBA version with the sound fix patch. It also fixes some magics so they don't run at 5fps like in the original gba release.

>how has it held up over time?
It's not the bugged out shitfest that some early FF games are, but I otherwise thought FFV was one of the weaker entries in the series. Playing around with class combinations was fun, but FFT did it better, and with a better story and setting to boot.

Funny you should mention it though. I'm about to start a 100% playthrough soon.

>what is the best version?
I would stick with the PS1 FF Anthology port, or the original fan translation of the Super Famicom version. The Anthology port has a pretty questionable translation, but it's still playable. All of the GBA FF ports were slaughtered in too many ways for me to summarize without going into a multi-paragraph tangent.

>apparently the steam version is shitty
Square has gotten really lazy with porting since the merger. As a rule of thumb, I steer clear of any port that bears the Square Enix logo.

FF5's story is straightforward fairy tale, like something out of a Grimm brothers book.

Every other FF has nothing much more than just "group of rebels fighting an evil empire", or some convoluted shit that involves alien races, renegade beings with god powers, amnesiacs, mysterious veiled cool fighters, and a looming impending apocalypse.

Stay the fuck away from that unless you like waiting 10 seconds every time you enter the menu.

The GPU port is fine. You get a different font, and that's it. Yeah, the sound sucks, but there's a patch to fix that.

Well yeah, but no other game in the series goes completely overboard with its goofiness the way FF5 does. Not to mention the writing is nowhere near as fleshed as some of the other games in the series. Even FF4 had more going for it with its cast and narrative.

>Remember suplexing a train?
What does that have to do with the story? That's either a bug or a mechanical oversight.

Unfortunately, but you get used to it. The Anthology port of FF6 suffered from the same issue.

>GPU port

I assume you meant to type GBA. The port received more of a makeover than the addition of a different font. The palettes are washed out, the script was so loosely translated that it may as well be a different story entirely, and all the bonus content shoehorned into the game throws balance right out the window. Not to mention all these SE ports have such poorly conceived "bonus" content to begin with. It's like something straight out of a fanfic. (Although that admittedly summarizes the base plot of FFV, for that matter...)

>The palettes are washed out
It's not that bad, especially if you compare it to stuff like the GBA ports of the first two Breath of Fire games... bleh. Plus, the redone battle backgrounds look really good:

>all the bonus content shoehorned into the game throws balance right out the window
I mean, it's not a particularly balanced game to begin with. Mastering the right jobs and getting a few good Blue Magic spells here and there throws the main game's balance out the window as well.

Yes it is, otherwise I wouldn't be complaining about it.

What's the point in trying to diminish someone's subjective views with your own subjective views? I don't like the WASHED OUT palettes. Yes, they are washed out. A number of GBA games were this way to accommodate the original GBA hardware with its lack of backlighting.

I'm not going to waste my time pulling up a side-by-side comparison only for you to reiterate your original viewpoint when you're evidently color blind.
