Trivia: Why do you think Hannah is the worst character in the game? The answer is NOT obvious, trust me.

Hook (Irem)

Fun game.

Play the Japanese version. Way more colorful, and has this female boss instead of the Hook clones.

Nope. It's pretty much unanimous that Hannah is the worst by far.

Hannah can combo with a knife only, but the knife is a mediocre weapon in this game.

Hannah is the worst character.

>She has the worst reach overall (talking about all moves, not just her jab)
>Gets hit by air attacks the easiest due to lousy attack hit boxes that don't cover her head region. This can be a problem against the short niggas (the most annoying enemy in the game) on later levels.
>Her rolling attack is utterly worthless and gets you smacked all the time
>Comboing into her rolling attack does less damage than a normal combo so there's no reason to ever combo into it
>knee, knee, rolling attack does less damage than a regular knee, knee, throw so there's no reason to ever use it after a grab
>Her jump kick gets anti-aired due to a shitty hit box
>Her dashing knee is garbage and gets you smacked all the time

But none of those are the reason why she's the single worst character in the game.

Punch, punch, punch, throw is the single most important technique in the game. Because it gives you massive invincibility, and does awesome crowd-clearing, and sets up wake-ups on downed enemies.

Every character can pull off the combo-to-throw technique 100% of the time...

...except Hannah.

She has something like a 30% chance of failing and her regular combo finisher will come out instead of a throw. So when you're in the thick of things and REALLY need that invincibility and crowd-clearing to get you out of trouble, her bug/feature can potentially fuck you over big time. Let's say that you're attacking enemies to one side, but an enemy is charging at you from behind. Normally, you'd simply buffer your combo into a throw to clear out all the enemies, but with Hannah there's a chance that the throw won't come out and you'll get blasted in the back (or from above, or whatever).

This is a really fucked up feature (or maybe a bug). It's completely random. It shows up on every enemy type. It has nothing to do with the frequency of your button presses or distance from enemies. Has nothing to do with the game's innate rage system, or your health, or whatever. It's just plain random.

1) Normally, when you're holding a weapon and get hit by an enemy, you'll drop your weapon. Hannah doesn't drop her weapon when getting hit.

2) When using automatic guns she has a faster firing rate. Like 3 bullets for every 2 bullets from the other characters. Useful for knocking down enemies quicker, I guess.

3) She can combo with stabbing weapons (knives and broken planks).

That's about it. None of the above are that useful though.

Return of Double Dragon is pretty fun but it looks unpolished. What a shame. It could've been one of the greats if the game were fleshed out more, because the combat is excellent.

Return of Double Dragon was literally rush-release before it could properly be finished.
>No story and cutscenes. Not even a real ending.
>Stages with non-threatening hazards.
>The manual implies that Billy and Jimmy's styles were supposed to be even more different than they ended up being.
>Marian is in the manual (pic related) but she doesn't even show up once in the game.

Also, the ability to turn off friendly fire in the options mode would've been nice instead of the dated Mode A and B nonsense that makes no sense in a game with a join-in feature.

Fuck good to know. Thought it was my controls.

The rage system is really funky and there's practically no info about it anywhere, but this is what I know from my observations:

First of all, I know that it exists because when you start a new life (i.e. clean slate) you always do the same amount of damage (for example, Jack/Hannah/Mustapha always do an identical 1.0 damage, and Mess does around 1.25 damage). But as you progress and kill enemies and/or take more damage, you'll start noticing that your characters are doing way more damage.

The "rage" is activated (usually) as you do damage to enemies.

Once activated, you get a damage boost. Some moves seem to get a bigger boost than others. Sometimes, the throw from the combo-to-throw technique will do a crazy amount of damage.

While rage is activated, once you get hit, your rage will (usually) go back to point 0 and you have to build it up again. But sometimes, you can take an extra hit (or even more maybe) before it goes down, and very rarely, getting hit will actually boost your rage. There may be even more random elements.

Also, one more thing to keep in mind is that when you're low on health and your life bar starts flashing, then you will sometimes automatically get rage. If not, you need to build it up. But while your life bar is flashing the damage boost from rage is way higher than a normal rage.

One more thing about Hannah:

Her combo-to-throw failure actually does seem to depend a bit on the enemy type. For instance, she'll fail much more against bigger enemies, while she'll fail less on normal peons. That leads me to believe that it's an intentional design, kinda like how Haggar's grab has a 'random' duration before dropping the enemy.

2) Do his jump attack

3) Do it like a million more times. on everything.

4) Do his ground and pound on downed enemies and bosses. mash the shit outta that button. Ralf Jones got nothing on this nigga.

5) Destroy everything.

Can't remember what that is.

But Night Slashers is all about infinite jabs and grab exploits on bosses.

Some obscure info about that game:

Each character does more damage against specific types of enemies. For instance, cyborg dude is strong against those axe-wielding dudes and other baddies.

Each character gets a different amount of health depending on the food item. For instance, the vampire hunter gets more health from stews and cakes.

That weird "Stinger" item makes your next attack be a "critical". There are random critical attacks in the game.

>> No.3291979

>>3291821

Wow, thanks! That's great info! Been wondering about what "Stinger" does. Now that you mention it, I did notice how that "commando zombie" that appears near the body bags part of the first level usually dies after just one hit. Now I know that's because I almost always pick up "Stinger" right before that punch.

>burning attack
Can't remember what that is.

Sorry, I mistyped that badly and made it unclear. What I meant was the aerial attack that you can use to hammer down your opponents into the ground and then crush their skulls. I use the charging attack a lot but I probably shouldn't rely to much on that.

Right now I got to that "Knight armor" sub boss on level 3, but I usually buy it right after him. I don't want to spoil the game for myself so I almost never continue. Can't wait to see what the third boss is like.

Why is Violent Storm sugar sprinkled? Sure it's is not the darkest game ever but Konami's Asterix would fit that description better.

Pity you can't get original colors of Violent Storm on MAME. I still remember how nice the game looked like on original hardware (had the arcade in my neighborhood as a kid).
