So anyone out there who uses a PSP for PS1 gaming only?

Not me, I use it for a lot of systems. That said, despite it being able to almost-perfectly emulate PSX games the lack of two additional shoulder buttons really fucks it over in certain games. Especially if you have to use them on the move.

Is there some kind of peripheral that can plug into a PSP Go that adds two shoulder buttons so I don't have to use the analog stick?

you will end up not wanting to play 75% of the library without the L2 + R2 buttons

these guys are being dramatic. you're not exactly losing L2+R2, they're attached to the joystick by default. but to make up for it you can map any button in the game to any button on the controller. if you think outside of the box a little you can rearrange less used buttons to to the joystick. for instance, on medal of honor, i mapped L+R to be aim and fire, square+circle became strafe, and the joystick handles crouch and change weapon. in practice, it's just like goldeneye.

the real disability of the psp for psx is the lack of analog capability. but none of this stops the psp from being the best handheld psx emulation device out there.

plus you can use a video cable to connect it to a tv at native psx resolution, making it reasonable competition for emulating with a pc.

God no. >>3287068 is downplaying having proper shoulder buttons and analog sticks. PSPs belong in a landfill.

Did you forget that the original PS1 controller had no analog stick either? For an authentic experience you don't need anything but the directional buttons, aside from a handful of games that specifically use the stick from the later controllers (Ape Escape is one, iirc).

The lack of all shoulder buttons can be an issue but it depends on what games you like to play. There are a lot of PS1 games that really don't use all four shoulder buttons. I personally mostly enjoy RPGs, so I never saw any problems.

Anyways I don't use mine for just PS1 gaming, I also use it for GB/C and GBA emulation as well as NES, some SNES as well as PSP games. While it's not the best portable system on the market, it's cheap, easy to use and versatile.

I played some Eternal Punishment and it seemed alright.

That's why I bought mine, the PSP library doesn't interest me besides Monster Hunter and I already bought a 3DS.

Back at the day I didn't have a PSX and played onlt at friends' houses. Now I get to see what stuff like Legend of Legaia is about.

zzt3 is pretty good, and there are some good enhanced ports. emulators are very good.

unrelated but is there is a list out there of SNES games that run smoothly on snes9xTYL?

Wild Guns runs great, while other games like F-Zero and FF6 run slow

SMT 1&2 run well IIRC.

Im not sure if my save with the PC snes9x is compatible with the PSP emulator

Yeah, played Tony Hawk 3 on mine just before bed last night.

If you've got the funds, spring for the PSP Go + Dock + DS3 setup. On the dock it plays just like a PS1 you can use with a DS3 - all four triggers, analog sticks both work (GT2, Ape Escape). It does 240p through component (unlike actual PS1), and it's far easier to hack than PS2 or PS3.

Lift it off the dock and it's a great portable system, for the 99.9 percent of the games that were designed for the original controller and only need one set of buttons accessed quickly.
