are you ashamed of something you got wrong all these years about old games?
i always thought earthworm jim was shamelessly trying to rip off rayman, turns out it came out a year before

Same.

How is Earthworm Jim anything at all like Rayman? Is it that they're both sidescrollers?

For me, thinking that status damaging moves in Pokemon were useless. Now I realize how important they are.

How exactly does that work?

Played Rocket for about a minute when I first got it and then moved on to the next game because I thought it was gay. Didn't touch it again until about 5 years ago when a friend told me it was good. Turned out to be a great game.

This. It's specially marveling how it displays the tittle right in your face, but I still didn't notice it till some years ago.

I always thought Phantasy Star was a ripoff off of Final Fantasy until someone on this board corrected me.

Although SEGA were often known for making ripoffsnof popular games (sometime better) because they were pretty much forced to. Nintendo had 3rd party publishers in handcuffs back then.

A lot of status moves in most games usually are useless though.

To be fair, if you pick bulbasaur, the game is so easy that you will never need to bother with anything that doesn't deal damage.

And then I have to listen to people saying that bulbasaur is the worst of the three.

Same here, I always read it as "Kong Quest", not "Kong's Quest."

That said, I never realized it was a play on the word Conquest until 5 or 6 years after the game came out

The third level of TMNT.

As a kid I would always play the game every once in a while, get to a specific jump on the 3rd level, and be completely unable to get across. I thought I wasn't jumping late enough to make it. I tried it every now and then for years on end.

About 6 years ago I decided I was gonna sit down and finally beat all the old games I never was able to. Got to that dreaded part in TMNT, and got past it on the first try. The mistake I had been making the entire time? You need to make a SMALL enough jump to not hit your head, as the loss in momentum will doom you. All those years as a kid and I never thought to try something besides holding down the jump button for maximum height. It was then I learned the real BS of TMNT is the last two levels, but still pulled off a win.

Not ashamed of this one, but I had the FF6 Nintendo Power strategy guide, so I thought Evade actually did something and all the other inaccuracies within. Didn't know better until the early 2000's when I read about the bugs on gamefaqs.

Those people are literal retards.

I remember some lper (some British guy IIRC) on youtube saying Charmander is objectively the best starter and Bulbasaur is the worst and he could just never use Bulbasaur because of how terrible it is, and I'm just like nigga are you for real? How the fuck do you even play Pokemon and end up thinking that? He was ace at editing videos but holy shit how the fuck can one man be so wrong?

>> No.3286325

>>3286317
Maybe he thought bulbs said was the lamest, not necessarily the worst fighter?

Which is true. But Squirtle is the coolest starter if he's going off that...

Charmander is so good that you are obliged to capture a mankey or a nidoran male or female (they learn Double kicks) just to defeat Brock.

I always thought the Mode button on the Genesis' 6B Fighting Pad was only for switching between 3-button mode and 6-button. I didn't realized it had gameplay functions in certain games.

You can beat most games using only damage moves. You can't beat any game that I can think of using only status moves.

>> No.3289865

>>3289850
You can beat (a large chunk of, at least, once you get the spells) FFV by using nothing but a combination of LV2 Old and LV5 Death.
*pushes up glasses*
Jokes aside, it's not exactly a fair comparison. You can't win games without damage, but in well-designed games some battles can be more difficult or almost impossible without status effects. A good game is one you can't win without using a mix of damage and status moves.

If you pick Charmander you've only gotta grind a bit more to face Brock.

I never got why people went on about how the starters effect difficulty, it only really makes a difference at the very start when you only have a limited range of Pokemon.

Funny, earlier today I was thinking about when I used to go down the motorway and I'd pass a sign that said King Sedgemoor's Drain but it later emerged that it said King's Sedgemoor Drain - King's Sedgemoor being a, well, moor that was plagued by drainage issues centuries ago until a man-made waterway was built to remedy the issue.
