We are all guilty of this. So share the game that sticks out most to you that, looking back, hooked you because of the visuals.

Pic related is mine. I have fond memories of pouring over the articles in this magazine before the Dreamcast launch, so hyped up for Sonic Adventure. Playing the game I remember telling myself it's great because it looked so amazing, ouch. Still love the DC today and consider it's visuals ahead of it's time.

Graphics are really important. Not because of how much detail you can put into something bland like what triple a developers nowadays but how you can make something pop out and attract people!

Sega understood arcade-style graphics better than anyone else. Games like crazy taxi, virtual-on, and panzer dragoon still look fantastic to this day despite hardware not being as impressive as today.

anyway. I'm definitely with you on this one, op. I can still go back to sonic adventure 2 and have a good time but sonic adventure 1's sonic segments are REALLY bad. Game looks nice though.

Another game I enjoyed mainly because of the graphics was LEEEAAAAAAGUE BOWLING. It's just bowling but with zany animations. It really hooks ya'.

>Sega is for white trash and niggers.
Which is why the company was founded in Japan and has a giant fan base there.

Flawless logic there /pol/-sama.

Pretty much this, Sega knew how to make games attractive.
When I was a kid, every time I went to arcade centers I'd play the latest Sega games, they were always ahead of everyone else in terms of graphics.

The Virtua titles all blew my mind, Daytona USA looked extremely good, it was DC-level in what, 1993? it was insane.
Virtua Fighter 3 in 1996 was incredible.

I can only imagine how great must have been to experience something like Space Harrier in 1985. That game blew my mind when I was a kid in the 90s, and it was already dated.

Aw, but it's so much fun.

Okay, I'll contribute then. I like vectrex games as I'm a bit of a sucker for vector graphics. The games themselves are okay.

While I actually like Dead or Alive 2 a lot I definitely played it 5x more than I would have otherwise because it looked so amazing.

The game just looked so damn smooth.

Shenmue 1 and 2 while amazing and I replay them every year definitely hooked into me that little bit more because of how amazing they looked (and still do, shenmue 2 especially has aged really damn well)

Before that maybe Agony on the Amiga. That looked amazing and was a mediocre game.

The thing is when it comes to retro games a lot of the time good graphics came with a good game IMO (At least in the 3d era)

I remember playing Colin Mcrae on the ps1 and being like "wow this looks great!" and playing it because of that.

I don't think I ever enjoyed a (retro) game purely because of the graphics. They sure can add to the enjoyment though,

Actually thinking about it I don't think Jet Set Radio would have been even half as good had it not looked like it does.

Nobody played this purely for the gameplay.

Had it been non cel shaded and gone for a realistic look or something I think it would have passed by completely ignored.

I cannot resist early-mid 90's anime-style art. Popful Mail, Lunar, Sakura Wars, and the list goes on and on. A lot of them are great games in their own right, but that style of art has a very calming, uplifting, reassuring effect on me that transcends the game experience alone.

VF3 was great but don't forget Scud Race, easily PS2-level graphics in 1996. You can go even earlier to Virtua Racing, smooth 60fps 3D in 1992. SEGA's arcade division of the time were just insanely good, their stuff always stood out.
