No, the "belt" is a description of the playing field. You move and fight within a narrow strip that lets you move toward and away from the foreground. It's not about auto-scrolling or anything like that.

>>3273065
>It's not about auto-scrolling or anything like that.

Then it doesn't need to be called belt scroller. Most of these games are about walking down a street or a path not on a belt, so call them path brawlers.

Arino lives in a completely different country with a different language and different established terminology.

Adopting terms from other cultures/languages can be helpful, but only if there isn't already a perfectly usable phrase without any problems that hasn't become outdated in any way. Then it's replacing what is already there and confusing people for no reason whatsoever than just that you like a certain tv show.

Golden Axe is a beatemup. Hacknslash is an RPG term, retards started to try and stick to games of different genre after early 2000's.
Give me 90's magazines that called GoldenAxe or some such hacknslash? You can't because back then people actually cared about genres, and gaming journalism was, well, journalism.

Europe doesn't make games, and when they do, they're fucking shit, like Castlevania on Amiga. Meanwhile Japan created most belt scrollers. That's the difference. You're telling people that not only invented the genre, but also refined it to adapt to YOUR customs, when it should be the other way around, you entitled little twat.

Lucas Arts made pointnclick adventures, and back then people of america were calling all of them them "Quests" after Kings/Police/Space Quest series.

My problem with Guardian Heroes is that I really want to like it but I'm terrible at it, and I really can't seem to improve. Either I'm making all the wrong route choices or the difficulty between levels oscillates so weirdly that my stats can't keep up with.

No, faggot. What you think are beat 'em ups used to be referred to as fighting games before versus fighters got more popular. Belt scrolling refers to the unique camera angle that most employed. So, to be completely accurate, you should call them belt scrolling fighters. Ones that fight on one plane (or multi-plane, like GH) should be called sidescrolling fighters.

The only such games I played are Pac-Land and Demon's World (aka Horror Story). Not bad, but not my favorite kind of game. I prefer to be in control of the movement.

Builderland (pic) is another one I tried briefly, but this is actually more interesting since the entire premise of the game is built around the fact that the screen scrolls constantly. I'm guessing that Sleepwalker is also like that, but I didn't try that one.

I wish "scrolling fighter" was the most used term. I just call vertical/horizontal shooters "shooting games", but I guess you can't just call these games "fighting games".

I like straightforwards genre names, not goofy stuff like "beat 'em up", "hack 'n slash", "metroidvania" etc.
