My Dreamcast was randomly resetting all the time, and would only read discs half the time.

After opening the console up (one of the easiest consoles I've had the pleasure of opening by the way) and adjusting the laser it's worked perfectly fine since.

Metropolis Street Racer is the best racing game on the system, bar none. San Francisco Rush 2049 is a fun arcade multiplayer racing game, the best port you can buy. Both are also cheap online.

as far as racing games daytona usa, sega rally 2, and hydro thunder are good picks.

for platforming sanic adventure 1 is fine, jet set radio is a must and rayman 2

if hes also into fps games at all get him half life, it does require popping a cdr into your DC as it was never released, but its worth it

One of my favorite game series of all time (VOOT being my favorite) but the controls on Dreamcast are hot garbage. What a terrible introduction to a great series. Even playing the Saturn original with the Saturn Pad is better, despite being 30FPS. I doubt OP is going to shell out for a Twin Stick controller so I'd say get the 360 port instead.

The people worrying about DC lasers with CDRs are people interested in long term preservation. For you and his purposes, it'll be fine. In some cases, reoptimized DC ISOs are less work on the laser than the pressed games.

Trust me, I've had my Dreamcast for years and used burnt cds on it and nothing bad has happened. If he likes Nintendo, you could get him some compilation discs with SNES games or rom hacks on them. As for non-homebrew games..

I always thought the Dreamcast controller was pretty comfy. The lack of a second joystick for camera controls is a little annoying at first if you're used to standard modern controllers, but you get used to it.

I bought a DC back when I was 13 years old and honestly like 90% of the games were fun, but I've always been into arcade style games.

So I'd say almost all of them. There are some shitty ones here and there, just look up some scores if you're unsure before downloading an ISO.

The best thing to do is to just order a shitload of them ahead of time on ebay. They take like 6 weeks to ship but you can get five packs for $1. That way you won't be near as assmad about swapping them all the time like you would if you were paying CVS buttfuck prices.
