i'm so jealous of you all, i never thought i'd get nostalgic in my old age. Low and behold though.... My battlestation is pathetic. I don't have a single old system, just my computer. I had a nintendo once, sold it for drugs like a retard. Yea good going on my part. I should kill myself.

Most other systems that I had that were retro though either got lost while moving or weren't mine. This is why you don't buy kids video game systems.

I started rebuilding my collection by importing consoles and games from Japan via proxy sites like fromjapan/buyee.

You can regularly score shit like famicoms, mega drives, saturns, etc for $20 and lower if you're patient, but they shipping prices can be pretty killer. My last shipment took >$200 to bring over, but I'd say it'd be 20-60 on average. You can run NTSC-U games on most of these consoles without too much trouble.

CIB games are also plentiful and reasonable. Almost have boxed kirbys up to N64 and I don't think I've paid more than $100 so far.

Well, if you're just craving to run stuff off a CRT then worst case you can get a Wii and run emulators off of it. Wii can handle stuff really well through 4th gen, and you can download WADs of the N64 VC library. Most of the good stuff is there.

Most emulators have some sort of 240p mode too, and it pairs quite nicely with a CRT.

>> No.3273641

the main issue i have with wii is it has shitty chargers for the wii remotes. I bought one from radio shack and it charges for 3 hours and the battery only lasts for 1. As far as a gamecube controller goes I can never seem to find a working one.

>> No.3273659

>>3273641
New gamecube controllers aren't too hard to come by now because of Smash 4. I can't imagine they're more than 25 online.

My suggestion is to just use normal AA batteries and get a classic controller. Be wary of third party ones.

Its an imperfect solution, but its gotten pretty tough these days. Even if you find your holy grail in a thrift store, that's only half the battle. I regularly run into Genesis's and SNES's in the wild that go for 40+ at fucking Goodwill.

Good luck dude. Just remember its all about the games, not how you play them.

I'm running into the same problems these days because of flash carts and burning discs for real hardware.

It'll always take some matter of self discipline. I try to log what I play and I keep a notebook of high scores and shit. Going through the Wizardry games on the NES/Famicom now and I'm drawing maps. Whatever it takes to keep you invested.

Been too long since a picture's been posted so here's my crappy old setup from forever ago. I was always worried that stand would fall apart. I'll get a more recent pic when I get off of this shift. Sorry for the incredibly shitty camera.

This man knows whats up.

Here's mine, I have a giant 27" Trinitron which sadly is not turning on at the moment. I had it for maybe a week or two. The TV itself had plenty of fixable problems (Convergence, overscan, etc.) and only went up to S-Video, but the picture was damn gorgeous and I only pray I can fix it so I don't have to lug this beast upstairs. I plan on framing a bunch of N64 and SNES game posters to fill up the wall soon.

At my desk I have a 12" Amiga 1080 RGB monitor I found on the street a while back. Cleaned it up a bit and viola. Just ordered an S-Video adapter for it, and I'm in the process of getting RGB cables. My plan is using the desk for one console at a time as to reduce my backlog.

Not bad for a free tv. Your model number should be located on the back sticker or the series model could be on the lower right front. The styling puts it around mid to late 80s before manufacturers started going thinner integrated bezels for a sleeker look.

it's a work in progress (didn't even have electric outlets down there until 4 days ago), the kitchen chair is just a spare from the basement i pulled out along with the small folding chair as a quick to put away setup for steel battalion.

the old furniture is for entertaining down there, i would sit closer when playing the games using either a sling chair or on the floor as the carpet i put down is very plush.

the quail couch is a hide-a-bed so it needed to be farther back to allow it to be opened up should i need another bed.

also that pole is metal not wood.

My setup works alright.

It's just a little 13" CRT on my desk next to my computer.

I do want to get a bigger CRT now, but I'm about to renovate my kitchen which involves knocking out a wall so I'm going to have to adjust my entire layout.

That, and I kind of chose to get a Neo-Geo MVS instead of a big CRT, but maybe I can get both with a bit of shuffling.

I appreciate the kind words, anon. I'd get laughed out of the CRT thread, but I'm actually running RF to both, my Famicom and PC Engine are un-modded (I'm weird about modding vintage consoles). There's a VCR under the desk that is tuned to channel 95, and outputs composite to my PVM. The RF out of the VCR goes to a shitty USB cable capture card, I basically rigged it up so I can take off the cuff shitty pictures and videos if I want to, pic related. My PVM is definitely not perfect, I saved it from the trash at my job, but it's healthy enough for the time being. I'll probably replace it with a consumer set if it dies. As for the audio, I'm a songwriter and have been recording stuff for years, so I just patched everything into my studio monitors, it's pretty awesome sounding.

They still exist, but anyone on ebay will be overcharging for them like mad. Only do that if you're desperate or have the money to burn. It is the place where you will see most of them come and go, though.

Otherwise, take the hard road. Search craigslist every day. There's a great app called "IFTTT" that can get you speedy alerts to new listings. If you want to be thorough, don't just search for "PVM". You may even want to get as general as "sony monitor", since some people post them up without even really knowing what they are.

Some people will tell you to visit local TV stations and ask the head engineer, but let me tell you that is just a waste of time, effort and gas. I e-mailed and visited about a dozen local TV stations last year (you can often find the station engineer's email address on their webpage), and have absolutely nothing to show for it. Most engineers are too busy to give a fuck, and some will have no idea what you're talking about. I think I got maybe ONE actual reply out of all the emails I sent. Besides, most stations sold/trashed all their CRTs years ago.

I did end up getting a nice PVM late last year, for free even, on Craigslist, but that was after THREE YEARS of searching, and it was an unbelievable stroke of luck. You may fare better or worse depending on how diligent you are, and where you live.

Good luck!

These days I have a little 14" PVM to fuck around with. Getting SCART cables are expensive as fuck though.

The solution to this problem is obvious.

Invest in a stupidly expensive, and heavy as fuck CRT projector.

I know you're kidding but I bet that'd be pretty rad.

I don't think I could ever imagine getting myself to do that after investing in this framemeister/hd projector route though..

I'm half joking and half musing over something I'd love to have the space, money, and chance to do.

A very high-end Electrohome 9500LC came up locally for ~$400 a few months back, but I wouldn't have been able to do anything with it at all as things currently stand.

that is true, also never move them.

I'm sure you can find low end ones rather recently, but finding high end models, in decent condition, and maintaining them can often build up quite a bill.

My setup, it's a bit of a mess right now. Just got a few new things that i hooked up without really putting them anywhere, just to test them.

Newest addition is the Laser Disc player, found at a yardsale with a few movies for $20.

I used that same Trinitron throughout college, it's a badass set for retro and last gen. I used the Component inputs for my 360 and it was pretty awesome.

Trinitrons are god tier.

I've got one of the later ones with DVI that support 1080i / 720p, holds up surprisingly well.

Really want to get a 16:9 one eventually.

That's pretty rad, one of my buddies has a fucking huge HD trinitron. It's like 300lbs and sucks for retro games, but it's god-tier for modern stuff.

This one >>3333550 is a 32" i got for free, it's the one i mentioned with DVI. Works extremely well for PS2, Xbox and Gamecube with composite. Haven't played a whole lot of older stuff on it though, but it seems to have great colour with other things. Weights between 160-180lb, and was a hellava bitch to get up 3 flights of stairs.

Pic related is the TV i've used a lot for my classic consoles, comes in really nice.

Moved things around now though, and it's currently working as my TV in my weight room. Got an old Athlon 64 X2 5000+ with a 6600GT hooked up to it. Let's me watch my star trek or netflix, etc while lifting. Actually works pretty great for watching old 4:3 TV shows off the computer.
