Much much better. Also it's barely third party since Nintendo and hori love eachother. It's like the highest quality closest thing you can get to An actual first party controller

Hori actually had a much deeper involvement with Nintendo than you think. They actually designed the Super Game Boy and the NES Four Score.

I fucking hate 3rd party controllers, especially the n64 ones.
Not retro but 3rd party ps2 controllers are absolute fucking garbage, one of my friends went through 4 of them in 2 months, he's not rough with them or anything, they're just cheap pieces of shit.

It depends. The hori mini pad has a larger dead zone and different diagonals than the OEM controller. It's much more sensitive, which makes it difficult to make small adjustments. It's also kind of cheap, and while it will last longer than an OEM n64 controller, it won't last nearly as long as a gamecube controller would. The d-pad looks awkward, but the controller is small enough that it feels natural enough to just reach your thumb over to it. It's not perfect, but it's functional. I would recommend hori over any replacement joystick for the OEM controller or any other 3rd party controller.

But honestly, for the average player, I'd suggest something like pic related: http://www.raphnet-tech.com/products/gc_to_n64_adapter/index.php

Remappable buttons, accurate joystick mapping, and only $40 if you already have a gamecube controller. Also much better than any replacement joystick for the OEM controller, and in many ways, better than the Hori Mini Pad.

>It's also kind of cheap
by this i mean cheaply built. they're actually very expensive to buy used and you can get an 8/10 or better OEM controller with the original stick for much less.

>Using the term "3rd Party" as a synonym of "Mad Catz"
For shame, there are some damned good third party controllers out there. PS2 had some kick ass ones too. Pelican had a fantastic wireless and transparent gamepad. There's also this gem.

That dpad looks like it was designed to torture your thumb, the whole controller looks like it's designed to cut you. When I imagine sitting on the iron throne from game of thrones, I imagine it feels like holding this gamepad, sharp edges jutting out and making it impossible to ever relax.

If you want to use the original N64 controller, your first option is to buy a lightly used controller on eBay with a tight stick, then disassemble the controller and lube the gears and bottom of the bowl with white lithium grease. Otherwise, if you don't want to mess around with rebuilding the plastic on the bottom of the bowl, most joystick assemblies can be repaired to an incredibly usable state with the fix mentioned in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQSsIyFqNtI , you can use "Taylor Lube HP" (which is really meant for slush machines, but one person said it works better so whatever) or white lithium grease.
Otherwise, just buy the Raphnet GameCube -> N64 adapter. It works incredibly well and I like it more than stock 64 controllers.

People love the gc controller but I find it to be awful. Hand cramp City. Maybe it's because I'm a 6'5 white man with big hands and not a tiny Asian.
