b. medieval madness - well now that the reproductions are out in circulation, its probably more affordable then its ever been, could be a good one to get. madness is one of my favourite pins, would probably be my 2nd pick if i couldnt get a twilight zone

You must not be very experienced with bangbacks. The sharpness of the impact required means that you'll bust your wrist before you can damage the game.

One good way to damage a game is to lurch it way the hell to the side. If the floors are sticky, it will tweak the legs, tearing up cabinet decals, and it's possible to scuff the heads of adjacent games.

There are two different skillsets :nudging and flipper skills. Nudging will make you amazing at older games, and vice versa.

To learn flipper skills, start by aiming for a shot from a cradle. If you missed, you were either too early, or too late. Adjust accordingly until you're accurate.

Beyond that, there are plenty of resources that teach more advanced skills online, such as papa.org. The video tutorials there are really good.

>>3271980
The tilt determines how much you can nudge, this is a designed feature. Experiment to see how tight the tilt is, and nudge as much as you can without tilting.

"Slide" nudges are different from "impact" nudges. A slide nudge is when the ball is coming down the middle, and you move it to >>3271980
the side to get a flipper on it. If you find a game on route with no tilt, you can do these all day, even to prevent the ball from entering the inlane/outlane area.

Impact nudges are where you strike the game with a sharp impact. I do it open-palm on the corners of the metal lockdown bar. This type of nudging is more advanced.

The theory is, the ball touches rubber, you see it coming, and you give a sharp upward or sideways nudge. If your timing is right, the post on the playfield will strike the ball, changing its trajectory (hopefully for the better).

Eventually you get future-vision and start preventing drains 2 bounces in advance.

The operator put it out there for you to play. If he doesn't want you to excessively move his machine around, he sets his tilt tight.

As a pinball player on location, you have the right to move the game as much as it allows. Speaking as someone who's been doing precisely that, including on games with no tilt: Loud noises from scraping the ground, multiple deathsaves in one ball, etc. The operator is the only one to blame.

If he sees warped cabinet decals around the legs, he'll learn a good lesson about tilt settings and the usage of those oversized plastic cab "protectors"

(img pulled off google but you catch my drift)

Regular tournament-level nudging is pretty tame in comparison to what you can get away with on route. The games are built tough, don't worry.

Later in that thread people correct him. That isn't the case.

Solid state flippers are designed to be less likely to burn out the flipper coils. However, they don't feel as good as the old style, and Stern has actually reverted back to the old style of flipper coils with their new "Spike" system. (Wrestlemania, Game of Thrones, KISS, Ghostbusters...)

Solid state flipper coils have 2 lugs instead of the normal 3. They feel different, and are less likely to burn out the coil due to not relying on the end-of-stroke switch being activated to turn off high voltage.

It's titled "Dialed In" and is a game where a cell phone located on the game calls you and the guy tells you what shots to make. A robot's arm stops a shot on the upper ramp when lit. Pat is using his 4 magnets again to throw the ball around the playfield below the cross cross ramps. Lit inserts move toward the player and you must stop them before they reach the flippers. There is another lcd display that has 2 way mirror that you have to shoot at like pin 2000. His 3rd flipper on the right middle shoots the ball up a ramp. Pat has moving target in the middle playfield blocking shots to the jets. Pat is directing this narrow game to the engineer like he did with us at WMS using someone named Wally and some Mexican as a cad drafter. I guess Jack will have to get some more investors to produce this game......as we all know of the delays from Hobbit. They are more than 4 months behind and still working with the same 2 year old white wood. Don't look for this game anytime soon.

3 new games Jack has in the lineup are Muppets, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Toy Story. He has the Disney license for them now. The Muppets is a poor choice as is only one of many Jack has made with JJP.

>> No.3278263

>>3277871
That was a bangback. Bangbacks are where the ball is rolling along the bottom wall, and you strike it hard enough to pop it off and directly onto the flipper.

Deathsaves are where you bounce it off of the left drain wall from the right outlane.

They're illegal in tournaments but fine on route. Deathsaves are very easy on most Stern machines from 2001-present

>> No.3278332

>>3278263
Nope. Bangback is the ball going down the left outlane and being driven past the flippers by means of a sharp blow from the wrist to the left center of the machine.

Death save is shifting the ball from draining down the right outlane over to the left, past the scoop, then performing a bangback type save.

"Ghostbusters is not retro" shitposter here, back again.

Having never played pinball IRL before, me and a couple friends checked out this pinball place today, it was really fun. From memory, I believe they had:

Star Trek
Star Trek: The Next Generation
Baby Pac Man
Game of Thrones
The Hobbit
Ghostbusters
Batman
Cirqus Voltaire
The Getaway
The Party Zone

There were a couple others too but they were switched off. My favourite was The Party Zone. My friends preferred Batman and Cirqus Voltaire. We weren't big fans of Ghostbusters because the ball felt really heavy and we all got game over really quick on it. I think we're at the skill level where our score essentially depends on luck, but still, it was fun. I could see myself making it a regular visit, although the train ride is a hassle.

We're talking about Farsight here. They get a lot of flak from people, a lot of it rightfully so, but I never see people slagging them off for their atrocious sound quality - I feel like I'm the only one that really complains about it.

Here, just compare. I recorded these two videos with the same settings way back when. It's Youtube, so the reproduction is worse than what it originally sounded like, but it's worse for both, so it should even out.

Here's me playing Starship Troopers (terribly) in VP8: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AfiqBAKJWjY

And here's me playing Starship Troopers in TPA: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GgUlUM-9mCM

The sound in TPA is absolutely horrendous compared to what VPinMAME can do, and it's made some tables unplayable to me.

I really hope that they don't fuck things up for the new tables, but I fear that my hope will not be rewarded.

I have a Bally Mr & Mrs Pacman, and a Bally Special Force. I also had Gottlieb High Hand which I ended up selling. The Gottlieb and Pacman were in players state (so gameplay mostly working but the aesthetical part was pretty worn - both needed/need some major touchups) and the Bally Special Force was aesthetically good just needed gameplay tweaks and other random things (like shorting causing playfield fuses to blow, dead speaker, bad battery on the board, etc).

It may not sound that bad, but when you dive into it head first without any help it really will overwhelm you. A simple dead bulb could mean a number of things : a short on the board? Dead capacitor? Bad Wire? Bad Connector between a board? If you're not into electrician work/general handy work involving electronics you're going to end up needing to buy voltage testers, fuses, special bulbs, soldering irons, new batteries for leaking boards, etc. Then when you get around to painting the thing, also expect to spend loads on random crap like the actual paint, this special icing type material to make the surface flat, a spray gun for the paint, gas mask so you don't die, etc. And then finally, you got the general stuff like new pinballs, wax, cleaner, etc.

Long story short - in order to get the machines 100% I would need to spend around 400 for the Pacman and 300 or so for the Special Force. Anually after that i'd say 100 a machine - random fuses the might blow, cleaning, lights, etc.

Of course, alot of this material you may just have laying around (such as soldering irons and all) - I am autistic when it comes to handy work so this was all new to me and I had no prior experience with these tools/had these tools so they added a good amount to the money spent as well as too the learning curve.

It seems as if you're ignorant of what they mean. Lyman F. Sheats Jr. and Dwight Sullivan and Keith Johnson make a game deep and good. You get Lord of the Rings/Simpsons Pinball Party and it's got Keith Johnson with Dwight Sullivan. Best Stern software ever? You get Metallica or Star Trek with Lonnie D. Ropp and it's weak until Lyman or Dwight come along to make it good. But you still want the pure skill and vision of the pros to make the game flawless. Medieval Madness style. Terminator 2 style. If it's Steve Ritchie game, you need Lyman or Dwight on that software. Compare the two Brian Eddy games with Lyman's software to that upon which Eddy did the software himself (Shadow). Lyman said no no; the software must be his domain, and Eddy must bring his magic to the playfield alone. Otherwise you get unlimited loop combo score progression.

Why did pinball tables bother with music and SFX? When I've played pinball before, the sound is always drowned out, either by nearby tables or by people in the venue. The SFX and stuff seem like they were pretty much just designed for collectors.

I always wondered this with arcade cabinets as well. It's impossible to actually hear anything from the game in a public venue.

The game was broken in a way it confused pressing the flipper buttons with shooting ramps/targets/etc. For example, I could get the skill shot, hit Venom six times, and several other things just by mashing the flipper buttons. At one time, I had racked up 30 million points before I'd even plunged my first ball. It was particularly sad when I was building my "combo" (I think this is supposed to be done by hitting the pop bumpers): multiple times, when I wasn't trying to hit the ball, I was mashing the flipper buttons as fast as I could until the knocker went off. How?

>> No.3322797

>>3322791
balls don't just roll on the playing field. They may also exhibit a spin, a rotation along any axis, or even multiple axes at once, end up sliding a little bit on the playing field. That has an impact on how the ball behaves when it hits any objects, especially rubber objects, as the spin changes the trajectory from a simple reflection, but also can lead to a ball not going in a straight line. Complex sims handle ball spin along multiple axes and update the values many times per second. Spin is inevitable on a real table, just because of the way the ball interacts with the environment. So lack of spin in a simulation leads to different behavior

>> No.3322841

>>3322797
>>3322791
Keep in mind that rolling itself is already a spin of some form. You can not simulate a pinball ... ball as a point mass floating over the playing field. Friction with the field leads to the ball rolling, sliding, inertia and momentum affect how it changes its direction when the spin is something other than what straight rolling would be, or when the rolling ball hits a target and gets deflected. I'm tempted to take the easy route and pass them off as non-spherical objects, like how Galactic Pinball used an air hockey puck instead of a pinball. Of course, I've also considered making a mixture of objects with different behaviors. I think that this would make it more interesting to play.

Just light Joust, Catapult, Damsel, Troll, and Peasant Madness then initiate Madness mode. Bash the shit out of the trolls. Defeat them and earn Troll Bombs.

Or fuck up your shots at the castle and hit those yellow deals to light Trolls! on Merlin. When they pop up on claiming your reward, bash the shit out of them to earn Troll Bombs.

Or have Trolls! lit on Merlin before entering Madness and use your multiple balls to bonk the shit out of them. You'll enter Troll Madness while already in Madness.

In any case, you get Troll Bombs by bashing trolls. So by lighting Trolls! at Merlin, you can earn Troll Bombs. Have to earn them though, by defeating the trolls with shots.

The software knows what rewards to give you at Merlin too. Only Lyman knows for sure, the software is practically AI levels of knowing just what you want and also screwing you over by giving you what it thinks you want.

During Trolls!, you may earn additional Troll Bombs by hitting the standups, or by banking a shot off a Troll and into either the Lock or Merlin's Saucer.

How many Sega machines can you list that cost over $2000 to this day? 3 pop bumpers, 2 plastic ramps, big cheap toys, empty playfield. You've got yourself a Sega. that's a bit different, I think. Stern's trying to improve the general profit, by selling the same "outwards quality", so to speak, for the same price, with more efficient components.

>Sold cheaply now
I meant the price of a new machine.

I was more thinking along the lines of
>3 pop bumpers, 2 plastic ramps, big cheap toys, empty playfield
Stern wouldn't do that today, although they probably could, and sell the results at a profit for a budget. Would open up a market of inexpensive machines for nice random pinball fun. As it is, the base price of machines is fairly high and requires quite a bit of upfront commitment.

Aladdin's Castle and Klondike were honestly my favourites of the day; how often do you see EMs in the wild? Klondike has this nifty slot machine-type thing. Little rollover buttons in the upper playfield and targets in the lower playfield advance the corresponding slot by one. Shooting the ball through the proper lane scores you the value on the slot, including big points and even free games. When I got home, I looked it up on ipdb.org and found this:

>The designers were worried that once the reels were set players would intentionally tilt to preserve the reel position, scoring it on the next plunger shot. Certain values could be multiple free games. In order to prevent this the reels advance one left and two right on tilt. This allows you to tilt when you were one left and two right away from a valuable combo. Often someone watching who knew the game would shout out "Titl for wagons". The player would slam the machine into the wall to the confusion of those not in the know. Upon reset the reels shift to three wagons and you score free games on the next come out if you don't hit the upper advance buttons (big pressure). I loved this game.

Wish I knew this beforehand; I could've played the thing all day.

Nope. I'm sure there are some games with two-way switches, but most rollovers only have one function.

I did not mean different functions. I meant that, the wire has an asymetrical shape, so the ball can roll over and trigger the switch in one direction, while being blocked by the wire from the other direction. Buttons just get pressed regardless of the direction you pass them (including sideways, which probably fucks badly with rollovers)

Had no idea what to say to Trudeau or Steve Ritchie or Lyman. Was walking past when someone told Steve Ritchie that Lyman had won the tournament though so I got to look at his face knowing that he feels Lyman is the best pinball player on earth and just needs more practice. Figured it could be a small bit of history in the making and possibly give us more Spiderman / AC/DC collaborations instead of Dwight Sullivan Star Trek / GoT tables.

Maybe not though, seems that Stern has Lyman working on everyone else's code these days trying to improve it. "Hey Gary, who's the programmer for the latest game?" "Why, the Stern Software Team of course". Gone are the days when Lyman can tell Brian Eddy to focus on the table and he'll wear the daddy pants in the software department.
