Got it randomly from a cousin throwing out his old games during the PS2 era. Started out thinking it was pretty easy and wound up very surprised by the depth the game develops in some of its later stages.

It was really awesome.

Basically just a level pack to the first game, arguably slightly worse due to a bit less variety but still just as fun.

Also, the cutscenes were way funnier.

I thought it was neat how actually 3d it was. You had bosses that required you to maneuver around them as well as over and below them.

The pop-in was difficult for my little mind to process back in the day, but I was so retarded about 3D back then that I ran into walls in Doom, so I'm sure my experience is less than universal.

The concept is really cool, and the games are fun, but it's hard to shake the fact that they're super cutesy kiddie games with (mostly) a difficulty to match. I remember the last boss of JF2 being a challenge, but most of the levels are easy peasy once you get the hang of it.

It's also interesting how there are some indoor corridor segments that are basically like a standard FPS. Like they just HAD to put those moments because hey, it's first person and you're shooting!

btw /vr/: any other games like this that do 3D platforming with big vertical levels and lots of actual floating sky platforms? Like practically just pogoing around on things in the void? The only one I can think of that gave me a similar feel was parts of Glover.

anyone who plays retro games can be considered hipster (not to mention it has critical acclaim, making you the contrarian), stop using buzzwords because your brain is too small to apply critical thinking skills. besides, it was huge in japan, plenty of more obscure games on the system.

A lot of the younger userbase don't even remember JF, so they think it's some kind of obscure hipster thing.

JF was featured heavily in many magazines and was one of the big early PS games. JF1 in 1995 and JF2 in 1996.
The thing is that as years went by and more games started coming out on PS1, like MGS, FF VII, and also Crash and Spyro, JF series was left behind and many people kind of forgot about it, but it's by no means obscure or hipster.

>> No.3260327

The only better platformer on PS1 than Jumping Flash is Spyro 1.

Spyro 1 might be the best 3d platformer ever made after Super Mario 64.

It was called Robbit Mon Dieu, and yeah, it was only released in Japan. Also the same developers (or some of them, anyway) also made Geograph Seal for the X68000 (which is in many ways the spiritual ancestor of JF) and Ghost in the Shell for the PSX, which also shares many similarities with JF. Both are worth checking out at least gameplay footage if you like JF.

Have you played Jumping Flash or even taken two seconds to look at a video? It's cute overload. I think you're overly sensitive to this claim, and I said it to point out that the game feels like a friendly, not-too-rough game for small children. Contrast with, say, Glover which is certainly cutesy in appearance but is pretty ruthless if the player doesn't master the controls.

It wasn't meant as a huge diss or anything. It's just the style of the game.

Exact did some pretty cool-looking GUIs.

They may seem cramped when you look at screenshots but they aren't intrusive when you're playing the games.

Also I think you can select the map off, can't remember for sure.

One of my first ps1 games. Jumping Flash 2 was also good. The controls take time to get used to going back and playing it again but the platforming and fps combination is neat. Wish there more games under this genre.
