What are your honest thoughts of Doom 64?

>> No.3246010

>>3246001
Better than Doom 1-2 and Final Doom.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=udjDdj4bcE0

>> No.3246020

It's my favorite vanilla Doom game.

>> No.3246038

>>3246001
I prefer 1 and 2 but 64's still a fine game.

I'm honestly surprised that the new game is implying 64 is canon, I had always figured it wouldn't be.

>> No.3246048

Rented it once back in the day, I remember it being pretty good.

>> No.3246061

How?

>> No.3246101

>>3246001

Never played it much, but has a great soundtrack and its quake like art direction somehow works for Doom.

>> No.3246113

>>3246061
Well...

Doom 2016 implies that the ending to Doom 64 is canon. Doomguy stayed in hell and fought demons forever. In Doom 2016, he was found in hell having been finally trapped by the demons and recovered by UAC from another universe.

The music really sucks for a Doom game and I don't understand why it's so beloved for this, it's all literally ambient noises with no tune or melody, no variation or change of atmosphere, it makes it very one note.

>> No.3246235

>>3246113
That's rad.

>> No.3246252

>>3246153
Yeah I agree that sucks about Doom 64, but then again one of the Final Doom versions had the same sort of music.

Still, I far prefer Doom I and II, although Doom 64 is underrated a bit still

>> No.3246259

Great Doom title. Probably my favorite game in the series because dat soundtrack and dat atmosphere

>> No.3246290

I remembered that I wanted to buy that game when I was a kid and my sister told my father that it was a very violent game. Instead, my dad bought me goldeneye because he recently saw the movie.

Maps are crap and it's missing Revenant, Chaingunner, Archvile, and Spiderdemon.

>> No.3246615

> missing Archvile
You say that like it's a bad thing

>> No.3246638

Great atmosphere and creepy music.
Also, the monsters seemed more intimidating than in the original game.

>> No.3246656

i like it a lot better now that I can play it with a keyboard+mouse

>> No.3246703

>>3246001
Overrated, honestly. Nowhere near spooky as people claim, and the gameplay is generally boring outside of a couple maps.

>> No.3246705

>>3246615
It is a bad thing. Game is practically ez mode because it lacks them.

>> No.3246787

Also I'm pretty sure you can get a glimpse of the Mother Demon during a flashback at the beginning of the new Doom game.

Everything a Doom game was meant to be. My favorite game possibly.

>> No.3247012

Entirely different and basically incomparable with the PC franchise.

>> No.3247014

>>3246615
Literally git gud.

>> No.3247019

The gameplay is just as fun as Doom 1/2 but with a darker atmosphere, although it has a random assortment of noises trying to pass off as a soundtrack and not aural vomit.

Your sisters a bitch but your dad made a decent choice at least.

>> No.3247915

My favorite Doom. Had the bleakest atmosphere and very intricate level design. I liked the creepy ambient music myself.
The secret levels were pretty sweet too

Superior game coming through. Better maps, more enemies, same sound fx, same composer.

>Maps are crap
lol no. The mapping is dense and consistent. Probably the most consistent Doom campaign in terms of quality--no fantastic maps, but not bad ones either. It lacks big open areas and has a lot of boxy rooms, but the layouts, flow, and setups are all solid. Pistol start or bust.

They removed the Arch-Vile and added Nightmare Spectres, so same amount of enemies.

>> No.3249941

To be honest it's my favorite game in the series. The soundtrack fits the design of the levels/atmosphere of the game. The monster designs are way improved. There are some pretty legit scary moments and cool secrets. I also love how the levels can dramatically change. Like that one level that looks like an open room then the ceiling comes down and it inserts a pillar with a key in the middle.

Best Doom game, by far. Love the soundtrack, the atmosphere, the guns sound and feel powerfull as fuck, excellent level design and monster placement. 10/10 game if you play on anything that isn't the shitty n64 controller.

I loved it. Thought it had good level progression, weapon selection and the dark ambient soundtrack was perfect. Played the hell out of this back in the day.

Doom 64 lacks Archvile as well in addition to Chaingunner, Revenant, and Spidemon.

PS1 Doom still has Chaingunner, Revenant, and Spiderdemon.

After being caught up with the hype for Doom 2016 I played through the original and had a blast. I always thought fps games werent my cup of tea but I guess I hadn't played the right ones(Goldeneye and Perfect Dark bored me to tears). Anyways, it sparked my interest in older fps games and I went on to check out Duke Nukem 3D and Powerslave on the saturn. Quake and Hexen are next on my list. I started Doom 64 last night and already it's one of my favorite games. The weapons feel good, the sprites look cool, the music and atmosphere is dark and creepy, and it's extremely immersive. I can't wait to play more.

It's like a devilock without the lock.

>> No.3251878

>>3247931
I think the sound fx sounds very odd in that context, it works better in Doom 64.

>> No.3251885

Is too bad that they kind of took after Quake 1 and there are no reloading animations for guns, like say in Doom 1/2, for the shotgun/SSG/Plasma gun. A bit static but they still had their own flavour, like the plasma gun fizzling until there are enemies on the map.

>> No.3251934

It is okay. Some of the puzzles aren't that fun, it mostly consists of corridors and you going left to right in them to avoid Hell Knights put into corridors. Though it gives you plenty of shotgun ammo with the super shotgun so it evens it out.

I dig the imp redesign, it really needed it.
