3244163 No.3244163 [Reply] [Original]

To celebrate the western release of Romancing SaGa 2, let's have a fun thread for the SaGa franchise! All retro entries in the series are welcome.

If you don't like the fact that the game is only available on phones, I understand completely, but please don't ruin this for us.

Please report and ignore mobile whiners. Don't try to tell them off, because they won't be hearing it. Thank you!

I got a good ways into SaGa frontier years ago and played a good chunk of the DS version of 2. I also unknowingly played some of FFL3 when I was like six, but I don't have memories of that.

I recently came across copies of Frontier 1 & 2 for $3 each at a garage sale, so I figured I should play through some of the other games to get a better idea.

I also have the RS1 translation on my SNES flashcart, but I haven't started it and was told I should just play the PS2 version anyway.

Friendly reminder to not unequip the Soul Steal mikiri until you've beaten Kujinshi, unless you like restarting your games.

And holy shit, the extra dragon bosses in the dungeons of memories are TOUGH, I got wiped out three times already by the fire one and I'm fairly positive I can beat the Seven Heroes with my current setup.

The option to update is there and people already sent complaints, at least in Japan, so it's possible they'll make some patch or update, the JP game's version is still listed as 1.0, don't know about the localized port.

Uh, I just remembered.

Therese is one of the archers who can spark Barrage Shot, she can do that kinda easily in the first chapter already if you have Random Arrow, you can grind the Goblin Cave in Leon's generation or the monster cave in South Varenne during Gerald's generation.

Barrage Shot is the best Bow waza and possibly the best All Target together with 残像剣(Afterimage Sword) and 月影(Moonshade), Therese is the first character in the game that can spark that, keep in mind though that the BR in RomaSaGa 2 keeps going up every time you enter a battle, regardless of whether you win or run away, so be careful.

I seem to have missed out Victor's event or I still have to trigger it, I got into his room but there's only one of the ministers that tells me something weird happened in the room and tells me about Victor's past, I suppose it's only for the Last Emperor and not the Empress, but then again, I only just beat Kujinshi in the Sealed Cave, so maybe he'll appear further in.
I could read a guide but I don't really wanna ruin the fun.

>Onmyoji is called Diviner
>Ninja remains Ninja

Welp, I'm already reconsidering whether the localization is as good as I thought.

That said, the Maze of Memories is kinda meh and it really breaks the balance of the original game, you get quite a lot of loot and it seems to restore the treasure chest each generations albeit with different loot tables, the bosses are tough as balls though so that's a fun challenge and it's made so each floor has fixed, progressing BR enemy batches, so you can't quite powerlevel as there's steep BR scaling each two floors if I got that right, still have to find out the Dread Queen but I haven't triggered the Real Queen quest yet so I might have some more work to do.

Ninja (and Samurai but eh) are words that even ultranormies know - Onmyoji is not.

Leaving one and translating the other seems to be common practice.

Really? That's still bad though, no matter whether it's common practice or not.

I might be wrong - I remember Final Fantasy Tactics where Onmyoji becomes Oracle/Mystic depending on what version you are playing, Ninja... is Ninja.

I thought that Fire Emblem Fates was an example but as it turns out Diviner is the base class and Onmyoji is the promotion which is... kind of silly because they "translated" one Japanese job and not the other. And Ninjas are still Ninjas

If you wanna get into the groove quickly, either SaGa Frontier or Romancing SaGa 3 are great for newcomers, otherwise, release order, especially since today all of the series's entries are finally available in english, albeit with a quite a few up and downs.

The DS remakes are great, but keep in mind that they add quite a lot of things to the original systems, and SaGa 3 DS is actually a SaGa game whereas the original GB was just a FF game posing as SaGa.

Well, for its time it was surely an ambitious game and quite interesting in what it tried to do, but nowadays it's really clunky and obsolete for the series' standard, and it's rendered irrelevant by its outstanding remake.

It's a game that you either play by going through the series through release order or because you're curious to see what the PS2 remake worked on, but it's a bit hard to get into it now.

>>3245246
>is there a way to restore characters' LP in RS2

You need a Life Potion.

There are three ways to get one.

Receive it as a rare drop from Red Slimes, which show up at later BR.

Pay the Witch of South Rongit 10K Crowns for one potion, however, she runs out of them after a while, and if she does before you get the Fishman Potion you lock yourself out of one quest so don't be greedy.

Each generation shift you get a few potions in your treasury.

There's an additional way of getting a Life Potion in this remaster, finding one in a tresure chest in the Maze of Memories.

Each Life Potion restores a grand total of 1 LP, so have fun with that.

>I guess I wasn't taking this game seriously enough

Nobody does on a first playthrough, don't take it too hard. You'd better be careful though, keep in mind that whatever new stuff you spark can't be taught until after a generation shift, that means that if you spark stuff on your characters, let's say James for the sake of the argument, and he dies, you have to RESPARK whatever you did spark, the teachers in the castle won't have the new waza until after a generation shift, meaning that each death can severely hinder your progress, coupled with the fact that the Battle Rank keeps going up with each encounter you'd better not have characters dying too much or your game's progression gonna get pretty uncomfortable.

RomaSaGa 3 lets character "master" waza, each character has different chances of learning what they spark, once they've learned something you can equip the mastered waza on anyone, obviously like all games certain waza are embedded and locked to weapons, like Spider Net, Mouline Rouge or Dancing Sword, but once you spark them everyone can use them.
>but for some reason I feel that it's a trap character that is really damn good at the beginning and then in the mid-late game it becomes dead weight.
Ellen can be made into a solid character given the right choices of weapon and class, but as a MC she's mid tier at best, she's basically a less powerful Nora with more versatilty since you can kind of customize her in the beginning, she's a great Axe and Martial Arts user though, don't underestimate her.

Characters specialize in the stats and the sparkable (learnable through that character) skills. Ellen is a great character for martial arts (no weapon) and axes.
You can equip any mastered skill and skill evasion on any character. however the damage or effect is dependent on your stats and on the weapon lvl. To master it you have to use it quite often.
Equipment can be rather confusing. Weapons, potions and shields will influence the availabe options in battle. You can only use skills for weapons that are equipped.
Notice: Shields work only with one-handed weapons like epees, short swords (cause the big ones are two-handed). They either add extra defence or negate the damage entirely at a certain probability. The latter shields block certain kind of damage like piercing. I'm not entirely sure if that is only relevant on the weapon used in that turn or on the currently used equipment. I'm sure that using magic deactivates the use of shields for this turn.
You know you will be in a water area? equip accessories that negate/absorb water damage. It's much more imported than raw defense.
Also about magic: gaining enough magic level (20 i think) will add additional effects to the basic spells.
A simple recover strategy is to have the self healing skill "focus" equipped, since it's a martial arts skill it no big effort. Also shadow servant is OP.

If they remade everything people would have said that the original graphics were better and muh RPG Maker graphics meme.

I don't give a single fuck, the game is good, I loved the original character sprites and frankly, the original backgrounds were pretty subpar even for their times, so while the new backgrounds do clash, they're still miles better than the originals and they're still pretty accurate redesigns that still keep the atmosphere of the original setting.
I honestly like some of them more than the original ones, the flying Hakuro castle is pretty great.

I'm just autistic about sprite graphics in general. The style looks very inconsistent. The 2D on 3D world look never bothered me, but the fact that it's obviously two different sprite resolutions will never be something I don't notice.

I was this way about the Pier Solar HD version, too. It's probably something that only bothers me, but it never will not.

That said, I'm happy to have the game even if the style is lazy, too, so don't get me wrong.

Candy isn't her real name BTW, she has a list of them that she cycles through but her real name is Tatayna (sp?).

She's supposed to have a sidequest that was cut content - she's the daughter of some big shot trading firm family (or something) and she ran away from home, which is why she always leaves the party if you enter her home country. my problem is really with the way that all the elements aren't even designed to fit together, like they just assigned completely different people to do each thing with no knowledge of what fundamental style or color palette or resolution the others would be working with.

I disagree, I think they did good.
Problem is they were probably payed in peanuts and bad sushi so they didn't put much effort, the only thing that clashes, especially compared to the originals are the icons for magic/weapon poficiencies and defense, which are admittedly garbage, all the rest is very similar in design to the original version.

The main menu is basically a HD version of the original, albeit with a brighter color, which I personally find very pleasant.

Battle menus are exactly the same, but blueish, without dithering and obviously less pixely.

Speech bubbles are pretty different but overall don't clash with the rest of the menus too much, those golden arrows are a bit lavish and over stylized but they make sense considering the main menu is a fucking marble slab.

The hand cursor is literally a HD version of the original.

Let me post a few comparison screens so you can see for yourself how much has changed.

I think the problems are on your end buddy.

Nobody's forcing you to play the mobile version, sure, old sprites and new backgrounds clash, but most of your points don't stand for me, the menus are almost identical to the SFC version but with some added particulars, I said I agreed with you when it came to the character menus and new proficiency symbols, which are awful.

All the rest is basically a HD version of the original layout with brighter colours and no transparency.

If you still wanna tell me you don't like the clash between modern and old 2D art that's alright, I can see what you mean even though I don't personally care, but don't tell me that the new menus and text bubbles are shit when they're basically the same as the original ones, I played the games you know, more than you ever did, and I can say that they did a decent job.

>which one do you actually, literally think looks better as a single image

I like both.

Both have their pros and cons.

The originals have more consistence obviously, but the remakes aren't as bad as you make them look like and certain areas are much better looking than the original ones which were dreadfully plain.

So, if you're a purist like those CRT spergs, go play the SFC version, if you don't care that much about graphics like I do then play the mobile remaster and stop bitching, nobody cares but your kind of people, we're talking about the games here, not aesthetic moral highgrounds.
>>3246921
You can grind as much as you like, not like there's any need for it though, even if you grind stats like mad you'll still be beaten like a little bitch if you don't have the equipment and moveset to make up for it, the contrary is also true.

Look mate, I'll be awfully honest, I don't give two shits about that kind of complaint.

Because it's the kind of complaint only jaded and out of touch people make, the moment the game changes its graphics the original feeling is lost, but if you just make a port of the original game after 20 or so years what are the chances people would buy it? Wouldn't that be lazy as well, that after 20 years they couldn't do something "better"?
Minstrel Song wasn't any different, people complained that there wasn't the same feeling as the original game, even though Minstrel Song looked pretty good fpr its time.

You're like one of those cranky old faggot gramps that bitch about their apples being tastier than today's apple, yeah, no shit they did (or did they really?), but we're living in a different time, standards are different and people need things to sell, make money and make a living out of it.

If you were expecting it to be remade like Minstrel Song, with the same kind of budget, time and dedication, you're simply delusional.
And let me tell you, almost no one gives a fucking shit about what people do with the remakes of the games they worked on in the past, Kawazu didn't give a single shit about FFII being changed from the GBA onwards, neither did the original team members, it's business and nothing more.

And now, stop posting the same trite shit that was posted in the last threads, you don't like how it looks? Fine, it's your own business, but here we talk about stuff we LIKE instead endlessly bitching about the obvious and having stupid bias.

Well, just beat the Seven Heroes and finished the game, still can't believe how even little bugfixes like the Wind Cutter fix can change so much balance in that battle and damn, Ninjas are stronk if you play aggressively.

Now, to wait for the patches for new game+...
I guess I'll restart a game anyway because I want to properly try out the Onmyouji class, and I kind of screwed up my progress anyway, didn't even see what happens if you max out the tree in the garden.

The ending always gets me though, no matter how many times I see it, it really is moving.

On a side note, the various rings available in the maze of memories are really interesting, they seem to give a 4+boost to single stats, which is pretty enormous, I don't know wheter you can get doubles, but if you do you can get some batshit insane potential like maxing out the tacticians' already obscene firepower, they're also pretty good to balance out weak starter classes and make them more relevant through the endgame, lots of experimenting can be done really.

Sure, the only case in which you can't use him "again" is if you've made him an emperor, characters which have been made emperors can't be chosen again for that role, although they're always available as generics.
That's the main trick in speedrunning to the last generation, just kill everyone and the game will eventually shift to the Last Emperor.

I seem to have missed your post.

To answer your question, what you choose in the beginning as weapon of choice DOESN'T change the character type tables, it simply gives you permanent stat boosts to your MC's base stats and extra starting proficiency with that kind of weapon.

Character Type is what determines the characters' spark tables, they sometimes change when a MC is recruited as party member, Harid is type 01 as both MC and party member, however, Ellen goes from type 03(MC) to type 08(Party member), that means that as MC she's more geared towards Axes>Martial Arts while as party member she's more geared toward Martial Arts>Axes, iirc the actual difference between those two types is minimal though, and the mastering system lets you work around that anyway.

According to the game's data, a lot of secondary characters have that kind of type shift as well, even though the only method to get them as MC besides cheating is using gltiches, and I'm not even sure if that actually changes the type and doesn't simply override it with your MC type.

I just checked on the JP one and they're there.

Ok, I've just read something on Kaerulabo regarding that bug and I stand corrected.

Basically, due to the bug you were talking about, the game actually changes whatever type you got through the creation screen to the type those characters have as a party member, so basically if you make a type 03 Ellen the game won't recognize Ellen as that type until after you save and load that gamefile and rest Ellen to a Type 08.

So as you said it's possible for instance to get the best STR bonuses by choosing to make Ellen a Hunter with Greatswords which would make her a type 02, spark whatever you can spark as a type 08 and then save and load the file so Ellen gets switched to type 02.

So, for those playing on emulators that would be pretty handy, guess they'll probably fix that in the incoming remaster, hope they don't fix the character swap bug though, that's fun to use.

Humans are the easiest class but can have a tough start because they're very money-reliant. My first playthru was a human, an ESPer and two monsters and I beat it pretty easily. I would only recommend taking one monster though, they can be liabilities at times.

Do not take two Espers. Espers have this annoying mechanic where they randomly learn and forget skills after battle, and the only effective way of preventing yourself from ending up with junk is to open your menu and check their abilities after every battle, and save if they kept the good ones and reload if they lost one you needed.

Monsters cost no money and are really easy and simple to grow, but are weaker and more fragile than humans or espers. Basically an economy option.

That being said, I'd say the most comfortable parties are:

>2 Humans, 1 Esper, 1 Monster (Balanced)
>1 Human, 1 Esper, 2 Monsters (faster progress but weaker)
>1 Human, 3 Espers (Very strong, but might become grindy)
>1 Esper, 3 Monsters (Progress very fast, very cheap, but need to plan out your monster transformations)

The upside of having 3 or 4 Espers is that you can just let the RNG carry you away

She's just THAT brutal, it's not just you.
You'll need to crank some magic up in this shit, buffs and heal and have some strong fighter fuck her shit up, blunt attacks are your best option, so have someone with good martial arts and proficiency lay down the law on her.

Keep in mind that she uses soundwaves, so you don't have any kind of real defense against her, worst thing is she can target every party member and if she feels like being a cunt she can also use Pheromone to charm them, the Queen is legit harder and more powerful than Bokuohn and first form Roc.

Oh god, how can they translate that so badly.

Anyway, first of all ditch Imperial Cross, it's useless against the Queen.
Walrus is your tank so teach him earth and water magic and let him buff Fritz, Jason and Side's attack, you should try to get Capoeira Kick on Fritz, using Kick or Sobat will help sparking it, have Jason use Spears. Side should use either Swords or Greatswords, axes wouldn't be a bad idea either, free fighters are pretty versatile anyway, Louis is worthless against the Queen as you are now, make him a dedicated healer together with Walrus, pump up that water magic son.

Your HP and proficiencies, especially magic are dangerously low for what you're trying to do though, did you already do Cumberland's scenario? I will help you build up some proficiencies and money, and keep in mind that if you don't do it during this generation it automatically shifts to the worst route and ending, so keep that in mind.

Komulune volcano can be pretty tough so be advised.

Also, you're definitely not using magic as much as you should, you can't progress without magic in this game, any boss or random encounter after reaching mid-late battle ranks will tear your asshole apart if you can't cast buffs, healing and protections, and magic is the most powerful offensive tool when it comes to AoE, meaning you can conserve your WP for bosses.

Muse is a blank slate, you can make her become whatever you want, that's her only advantage.

She's a type 00, so she doesn't spark all that much, meaning you'll have to wait for others to master something good for her.

She's a character that you should use only when you're accustomed to the game's mechanic since to make her good you'll need to know what to look for and how to build her so she can work well in a party.

Generally, you need to liberate a region and have at least other two minor quests done to trigger a generation shift, there are exceptions to that however.
Usually you'll shift every three/four quests done or so, but afaik you can get a shift also by using 250 years for a generation and finishing a major quests, it's kind of a complex system.

>There's a requirement based on the Emperor's JP or something,

I honestly didn't even know that, I took you could get the center's in Gerard's generation for granted because Gerard sucks at everything but magic until he inherits Leon's proficiencies, so I alway had him at around 10 Fire and Light levels when I finished Leon's generation, Light Ball is also a super solid early game spells considering it can blind and hits all enemies, and it can still work throughout all the game, it's a lifesaver against groups of melee oriented foes.

Also, since Anon didn't answer my question, there's an item that's very easy to miss during Leon's generation that is a must get if you use the Last Emperor and not the Empress, it's the Somon Ring.

You can get it in the mansion in Somon when you fight Kujinshi, first floor, you have to go through the unlit fireplace, there's a room there with crowns and the ring in two chests, no mimics to ruin your day either.

You want to get that ring because it's one of the three accessories that protect against Charm, the other being the Demon/Magic stone ring(eh...) and the new Interio/Interior Ring that you receive from Victor's ghost if you win the fight, the only other item that protects against charm is the molemen Iron's Will helmet, and that's a non removable item.

I'm telling you all of this because Rocbouquet's signature move Temptation(remember Venus in SaGa 2?) charms all males in the party with 100% accuracy, unlike moves like Pheromone or Ghostlight, which charm universally but can fail. It's one of the keys to defeating both Rocboquet and the last boss, unless you're using an all female party, or a moleman, and keep in mind that it protects you against Pheromone and Ghostlight as well.

>I'm a sucker for permadeath in MMORPGs

Too bad it's a gameplay model that can hardly work with the modern idea of MMORPG.

Also, I've restarted a game and it seems that the New Game+ feature is there after all, I thought they still had to implement it on the Vita version?
Seems like you retain your items but they're kind of locked, I'm going to fend off the Goblin invasion in Avalon and found out I had basically all the objects I got through Gerard and Leon's generations, which means two Somon rings, two Youtoryuuko or how the hell it's pronounced, the Worm Slayer that dropped while doing Karl's quest, but nothing after those, maybe the game now records the chapters in which you got those items and locks them so you can't just cheese the game too much, would make sense.

What bothers me though is that the Imperial Records are seemingly reset to a blank state, I thought you could fill all the entries by choosing different paths during new game+, and I thought you also retained your proficiency levels, or maybe it's just that Leon's generation is locked out of this, whatever, I'll look into it later.

Not at all, it's actually a big part of why I like SaGa games, especially up from the Romancing trilogy.

I just thought it was strange that they would put such a function but not let you see all the entries on the Imperial Records, or maybe it's just a bug, it seemed logical to have all the lore regarding quests carry on to the next games, after all Minstrel Song did it.
I would have actually preferred new game+ to be simply that, slightly better starting proficiencies and the records, especially since items like the Moonlight sword were supposed to be unique depending on which Emperor you chose, then again, maybe you don't get those kind of items, just like you're forced to make a certain decision during the second pat of the Komulune's quest.

Whatever, we'll see, right now there's only items that carried over, so it's not too bad of a deal, having good equipment doesn't really amount to much if you don't have spells, formations and the proficiencies to balance it all, though it sure makes the game a bit smoother.

Don't worry Anon, check the treasury, it's there.
You can't lose items in RomaSaGa 2, even if you trash them or have characters equipped with them die, they all still go into the treasury.

If your Agi character only used Rapier>Saber>Light Saber>Cat's Claw you'll actually make out pretty good.

If you don't have enough money now, you'll quickly find your pockets overflowing when you actually make it to the boss's castle. Typically the pattern is that world map battles aren't very hard and mostly give you a chance to change monster forms and make just enough money to buy new armor, then when you actually make it to the castle you'll start fighting multiple groups of enemies, and wiping out 3-8 monsters with your mutant spells yields a lot of cash very quickly.

like I know in SaGa Frontier Gun damage is actually based on Willpower and learning Gun Techniques is based on Intelligence, but learning martial arts and sword techniques is based on talent and stats have no impact.

>And do I need the magic research center to learn Fireball, or does simply talking to her in that little room do the trick? Sorry about all the questions.

Don' worry Anon, this thread is here to help people like you.

You don't need to build the Magic Research Center(Also because you can't until you reach Gerard's generation and have a minimum amount of JP on your emperor/Gerard), once Leon talks with Oaive in the throne room and you play as Gerard go down and talk to Emerald, she'll teach Gerard Fireball.
You do however need the Magic Research Center to teach anything more than that, so have Gerard spam Fireball, he's also got the Magic power to make it a real good spell, once he inherits Lightball you'll want to abuse that too, it's a great spell that will also help you build up proficiency levels.

Keep in mind that you NEED proficiency levels to learn new spells like Moonlight, Self Burning and so on, so always have a dedicated spellcaster in your team using magic constantly, otherwise you'll end up needing to grind, and grinding is a not advised until you know what to expect.

Fusion Spells, some of which are vital to simply not die like a bitch to bosses, also require pretty high levels on two schools of magic to be created, ideally, by the endgame you should have around 35 in all schools of magic so you can get both the most important Fusion Spells and the last tier of normal ones, including Quicktime if you feel like the game's too hard.

One last reason you'll want to build proficiency is that RomaSaGa 2 doesn't have individual WP/JP growth rolls like the other games, rather, you get 3 WP/JP per proficiency point, it's a pretty delicate sub-balance system.

I've heard about this, you can actually make the game unwinnable if you grind too much, right? It's basically the same as The Last Remnant, which is a SaGa game in disguise. I think that's why the New Game+ feature was added.

Pretty much, not actually unwinnable but extremely frustrating as you'll probably won't be able to win random battles anymore.

In this remaster the Maze of Memories changed that, since floors have fixed BR enemy batches, but it would be extremely tedious nonetheless, in the SNES version, good fucking luck.

I'm currently on new game+, seems like you just get your items back, and they're given to you gradually too.

Sure, the only thing Leon and Gerard can't do is sparking anything more than starter waza, they're a unique special type, type14 iirc, mainly because they're very good characters stat wise and they didn't want them to become more powerful than they already are.

Once you'll get to play as the last emperor/empress, you'll see why they neutered their spark tables so much.

>>3253542
>is that good start for learning magic across the board, save for earth?

Sure, Wind Magic has the best basic spell in terms of attack power and JP balance, Missile Guard is a must have for a lot of fights and there's nice utilities like Wind God Sword, Water is strictly support however, no attack spell save for Fusion spells, but at 35 proficiency you'll unlock Quicktime, which is basically the cheat engine of RomaSaGa 2.

Emerald, like her class, is a Fire+Wind user, so there's no need to have her around since Gerard already has Fire and Aries has Wind, moreover, like Aries, she's extremely frail.

You're severely unbalancing your party if you do that though, you need someone that can attack with melee reliably and also build General Proficiency over time, Magic isn't a good offensive tool until late in the game, and it's still easier to deal bigger damage with weapons.

Soulgutter's a piece of cake as long as you follow the advice from that one guy, I don't need to tell you who he is right? Though you can also bruteforce it if you've got a strong setup, just make sure you can cure petrification and heal often, Soulgutter has very high defense and specializes in shutting down and killing characters, moreover, he's a ghost type.

Since you've killed the vampire you have the Grail now, it's a very powerful tool that can also be exploited with a certain spell, hold on to that, unfortunately you have to make really long trips to recharge it, but it's such a strong tool it's a good gimmick to prevent easy exploits.

>I figure I'll do Water Rite next and then Assassins.

Sounds good, be careful about the Assassin's guild boss fight, it can be brutal if you don't have good equipment and setups.

>But I hear the battles to do that are also pretty hard.

They're locked high ER battles, so yes, it's a pretty tough challenge since you have to do four of those, the Grail really helps you out since you'll be facing undeads, but keep in mind you'll be fighting monsters that are geared towards heavy tanking and offensive melee beatdown, you'll need a fast setup that can either reliably stun or debuff very quickly or both.

You should also worry about the Emerald of Evil quest, it's another one that can be easily missed, the boss battle is extremely tough if you don't have a certain spell though, and even if you do it can still be an uphill fight.

Ah, it's a classic, tons of 4komas have been made about that since RomaSaGa 2, the seven heroes didn't even need to kill you in that case as long as you had unprotected male characters with that spell equipped.
Like, good luck beating something with 100KHP, regens 999 HP each turn, can attack up to seven times in a row and charms your mage to use that spell on them on the very first turn.

Then again, Saruin's Animate Dead is nastier as you can't cure a character which was reanimated, what's worse than that is that reanimated characters don't stop until they get KO'd, you can't target your allies for attacks and it's very possible Saruin will chain Animate Dead on whoever dies and keep them locked into Animate Dead state if you're not fast enough, a literal nightmare to fight on his 10 FS version.

Seeing how Toma was also in the dummied out data as a playable character I don't think that's the case.

After all, lore and story wise Oaive has some good reasons to be a playable character along with the other two guys, supposing they're indeed both Ancient Ones, which seems likely considering the costume colors.
What I don't get is why she has a fighter costume when she's supposed to be a mage, having generic NPC stats doesn't really help either.

I wonder if she'll become a playable character in a possible future remake, Minstrel Song did add quite a few characters, having Oaive join in the last generation with three buddies wouldn't be a bad idea.

I also hope that the incoming RomaSaGa 3 remaster will have some extra characters, with the recent trends of both Emperor and Imperial giving you both Volcano and the Professor it would sure be nice if you could recruit them, an optional fight against the mayor of Kidlant would be a nice touch too.

I apologize for the overthinking but what are you supposed to do in-between quests in Minstrel Song if getting into too many battles can increase your ER? I've been playing for a while and have had to resort to using a guide for quests that I triggered but then didn't know how to progress; Patrick's money laundering was the first one. Turns out I had to check out the sewers in Melvir despite the quest being in initiated in another town but I wouldn't have known that if not for the guide.

Assuming that this means you're practically forced to explore in addition to completing quests but you're not encouraged to grind, what if my ER increases? Would those older quests that I forgot to progress be locked? Am I just underestimating the importance of NPCs?

Also, how important are skills and classes? Since I need jewels to advance those and quests are the main supplier of those, it seems. I'm having fun despite all this, not knowing how to play the game is exciting but I don't want to end up with an unwinnable game eventually.

I feel like people really overstate the "dangers of raising ER" here and maybe in other places.

You seriously don't have to complete every single quest in the game per playthrough and in fact it's going to make future playthroughs really boring because you're going to be doing the same quests over with nothing new to entice you.

When they say don't grind, all it means is "don't run around in a circle for 5 hours fighting battles for no reason", as long as you're accomplishing something other than fighting battles for the sake of it, you should be fine.

Romancing SaGa is completely non-linear (practically a Japanese-made WRPG) with a much different battle system that punishes you for grinding and is challenging throughout the game (unless you know how to abuse everything). The story isn't as dense as FF, it's more about finding different events and quests within the overall framework of the setting. If you want to get a feel for how it is, you could try 3 on the SNES or either of the PSX SaGa Frontier titles.

It's more a case of it being more important to make money and find treasure and learn abilities than it is to strictly "get stronger". The problem is that most games you can just get stronger than the enemy, while in these games you are a tiny little human and your enemy is a giant, you are not going to beat him at arm wrestling. The point of all this is that you can't simply ignore tactics and brute force anything, nobody is going to let you sit around and go full retard.

>> No.3255190

Wew, lots of questions here, that's good.

>what are you supposed to do in-between quests in Minstrel Song if getting into too many battles can increase your ER?

Gathering materials to forge or upgrade weapons is always a good idea, that's why you invest in classes with field skills related to gathering and exploring.

> Would those older quests that I forgot to progress be locked?

Yep, also, if you exit the city or sleep in an inn after triggering Patrick's quest at night you're locked out.

>Also, how important are skills and classes?

They're of absolutely vital importance, only Rosalian Mages can fuse up to three spells, Castle Knights are the best tanks in the game and have very high bonuses in triggering defense skills, Martial Artists are amazing at lowering AP requirements in a lot of useful weapon types, certain classes also let you learn field skills such as climb or jump in a batch of other abilities, which is pretty good, and trust me, you need stuff like Jump, Climb or mining if you want to progress at all.

>not knowing how to play the game is exciting but I don't want to end up with an unwinnable game eventually.

Understandable, but SaGa is a series that requires more raw practice than just thinking long and hard, you can follow a guide all you want but you often don't realize the importance of a lot of things until you see them directly and experiment with them, besides, guides are no fun in a series like this.

Don't worry about making a 100% playthrough, SaGa doesn't force you to complete all sidequests and meticulously minmax, even the hardest bosses don't require OP stuff like Overdive, the only thing that requires you to minmax is optional challenges like full powered final bosses, and even then, only the Egg in SaGa Frontier 2and 10 FS Saruin force you to be batman prepared.

Just take it easy and have fun, there's 8 characters for you to play with, what you missed in a playthrough you'll get in another one, getting gud is part of the fun.

Their ability to trigger Surge/Reverse more reliably makes them probably my favorite class. If your jewel counter is high enough you can absolutely just field a party of nothing but Martial Artists, and then just spam surge/reversable techniques for auto-combos

They also get to use Scimitars, Staves, and Pole-Arms, so it basically doesn't even matter that they don't get any magic schools, you get all the channeling weapons you'll ever actually need.

You can only fuse one spell at a time. You can do it anywhere as long as you have a Rosalian Mage/Imperial Scholar. You take one base spell and add a second spell to change it's power/cost/added-effects, and sometimes this yields a completely different spell.

One way to steamroll basically 80% of the game is to just get an imperial scholar ASAP and spam cheap Snowstorms every single fight

>>3254979
>In these kind of games I like to stay in a place for awhile and grind my stats/skills.
The GB trilogy is what you'll find enjoyable, those games still don't punish you for grinding like the series does from the Romancing trilogy onwards, you can keep grinding as much as you like, you'll just end up not receiving stat bonuses anymore and you'll be forced to get to new areas to get stronger.
>>3254983
>Is this still true in 2?
Oh yes, actually, it's much worse since now even story bosses can change forms and get MUCH stronger if you try to grind too much or take certain choices during certain quests.

>how does it compare to 1 ?

No multiple MCs, game is mostly composed by generics and you're forced to deal with the flow of time, your team WILL die and you'll be periodically forced to reassemble and rebuild it.

The game introduced a lot of fundamental mechanics to the series such as sparking/glimmering, focus on magic as toolset and a lot of other stuff, it's a considerable step forward compared to RomaSaGa 1, almost a completely different game in many regards.

The game is also extremely ruthless, it is regarded by many as one of the toughest RPGs of its time, you have to be REALLY careful about every single thing you do, included what you equip, the game's full of dickass traps just waiting to fuck you over, and it's beautiful.

But it's really not for everyone, it's extremely non linear, hard and deliberately designed to kill you over and over, play it only if you really like games with deep gameplay, exotic mechanics and no hand holding.

The translator used the terrible new romanization made by japs who obviously don't know how to Hepburn.

The name's Kujinshi, the Seven Heroes are named using partial anagrams of the seven big metro stations of the Yamanote line in Tokyo.

Kujinshi=Shinjuku
Noel=Ueno
Rocbouquet=Ikebukuro
Wagnas=Shinagawa
Subier=Ebisu
Bokuohn=Shin-Okubo
Dantarg=Gotanda

What's worse is that the guy obviously didn't know that since he rightfully corrected Gellard to Gerard, but didn't know about the references, then again, if you understood that the royals have french names and could see through "Gellard" why use something you already knew it was very probably a wrong romanization? Due to the way the mechanics are grinding isn't as effective as progressing. If you keep progressing you will fight enemies and bosses that are strong but won't demolish your party. Due to character growth mechanics you get higher chances for stat increases after battle and learning skills from stronger foes so staying around killing weaker enemies or what are strong enemies into weaker enemies due to how focused you are grinding them. None-the-less the mentioned battle rank already which can screw you over.

The SaGa series isn't for everyone, it harbors a lot of different mechanics that other JRPG's just don't have. You might not like some of the mechanics that the games feature but other people may actually like them.

That's possibly one of the best things about the idea of non random encounters in the series.
Since RomaSaGa 2 enemies all have distinct patterns instead of just using a simple follow script with erratic behaviours, ghosts turn invisible, fling enemies are fast and charge at you on straight lines, slimes are slow and erratic, humanoids can run up to you and catch up with you by dashing, as long as you learn how the different monster families behave you can avoid them more easily.

And again, even if you trigger an encounter you can flee with 100% success rate anyway unlike other games, which is kind of strange when you think about it considering Kawazu and Takai's love for rolls, you'd think they put a roll for escape success chances too.

Kind of, at max ER you'll start to fight batches of enemies which might be very likely on a minor boss level, rare Crowned enemies are also there if you feel like having a challenge, though they're new game+ material.

>Because all of a sudden everyone in my party is letting out combo after combo

Combos have specific chaining rules, as long as you understand which move has which property and how to properly chain them you can pretty much combo 24/7, besides, since you said you're getting combos easily it's better for you to try and set up Vortex combos now rather than simply chaining up standard combos, though of course that would mean setting up your characters on a slightly deeper level, which includes using proper formations.

>I'm in love with this game.

That's good, prepare to waste hours on it, once you get in the SaGa groove you can hardly put it down, there's so much stuff to learn and experiment with. I'd tell you to also play Unlimited as it has probably the deepest growth and battle system in the series, but it's a kind of a love-hate entry because it becomes extremely abstract in nature and very tabletop like and most rules are very "peculiar", it's better if you leave it last to not potentially ruin your opinion of the series.

So I guess when an entry in the Imperial Log ends in "but the Emperor failed to learn more," it means that I fought too many battles/did too many other quests and ran out of time on this one? Tough stuff.

it never happened to me, but I know how the quests are supposed to work.

Keep in mind that the records are simply triggered by NPC conversations sometimes, I suppose that something a bit more cryptic like the Mermaid quest can leave new players a bit puzzled when they see the entry in the records but can't seem to even find the quest.

If you can tell me the title of the quests or give me the context I can help you out though.

How many schools of magic can a character learn? I'd like to make one character universal while others can specialize in a school or two.

>Do things just rev up after you pass a certain ER?
It always goes up. You get enemies that do AoE damage with an attack that sometimes almost kills your guys then suddenly you are fighting enemies that hit everyone or just out right one shot them with PRESSURIZED DRILL or what not.

Thankfully due to the combat system and regenerating battle points per turn the game allows you to go more all out on regular enemies.

In some of the other games you could get some very nasty surprises from the next battle rank or just certain enemies. Like in SaGa Frontier when you first encounter enemies like mandrakes, bats, crystal trees, or liches. They will pull something out on you and you will be flabbergasted by how easily they wrecked you.

Thankfully it is the SaGa series and it actually allows you to save anywhere SINCE THE FIRST INSTALLMENT. That just irritates me that even today some JRPG's on a handheld don't even give you the option to save anywhere.

Three, non opposing schools of magic

>I'd like to make one character universal

No can do

>while others can specialize in a school or two.

Hardly a good choice in this context, it's better to have more tools than relying on a single set.

My suggestion are:

Always have three schools of magic on every character for obvious reasons.

Always have healing spells ready.

Specialize good casters in one offensive field of magic, Fire/Light/Dark are pretty good choices for that, have some school that can heal, like Earth/Light/Water and then consider that you'll need buffs and fusion spells, so have a few characters specialized in defensive or support buffs, non casters are the best choice for that since their low Magic scores prevent them from being good offensive casters.

Only 3? I was hoping that I could make one of the mages my emperor to have them inherit Fire/Light, but I guess that's not happening. Good thing I asked.

Magic seems to be very useful even on characters that would never normally specialize on it, especially if it's a buff that doesn't require training for damage like an offensive spell would, unless training increases the duration.

>That just irritates me that even today some JRPG's on a handheld don't even give you the option to save anywhere.

That's a rather archaic design choice that's supposed to make the game more "difficult" for certain game designers.

Unfortunately, they don't seem to realize that tons of pathetically easy random encounters only wear down the player's patience rather than their characters, which are always able to steamroll everything for free with no penalties whatsoever, so the point of enduring a gauntlet of battles to reach a checkpoint is utterly laughable and more irritating than challenging.

Luckily, both Kawazu and his team understood this far earlier than most designers.

>>3258679

>I was hoping that I could make one of the mages my emperor to have them inherit Fire/Light,

You can do that, each new Emperor inherits the skills of the previous ones, including magic, not to mention, if the current emperor has low personal level proficiencies but your current general Proficiency is higher than that, if you make a caster as your next emperor you get quite a few free proficiency levels in Magic.

It's actually a well known and reliable strategy to make your emperor a Tactician as soon as you get the class to have some free ride on their obscene Magic proficiency levels, given your general Proficiency level is high enough to do that of course.

>Magic seems to be very useful even on characters that would never normally specialize on it

As I said before, magic is absolutely a vital tool in here, besides, buffs and raw tools like Quicktime, Missile Guard or Wind God Sword don't need high magic scores to work.

Not that guy, but I definitely need to research that. I've been lazy and relied on the random chance that I set up the proper sequence to get a combo going.
I also -heard- about vortex combos, but never figured out how to get them going.

It's a different kind of challenge, really. The system works in a slightly different way. See: LP, lack of auto-heal after battles and the number of roaming monsters, among other things.
I think it has its own charm despite the minor annoyances it has.
Though in my own experience I ran into quest-trigger bugs that made completing them impossible.

Meh. I think it's a legit design paradigm.

The issue is that designers don't actually create tough randoms in a lot of them, which makes it pointless to limit saves if they aren't going to be a threat.

For the poorfags, I found this list of steps for getting the APK to work on actual phones, but I haven't actually tested it out because I'm lazy

>You definitely need to be on a rooted device, otherwise you will not be able to use the xposed module or patch the Android Patch manually with Lucky Patcher.
>You need the newest version of chelpus Lucky Patcher installed, which is ver. 6.22.
>If you have xposed framework available on your device, you will want to use Lucky Patchers xposed module, since this is the most confortable way, without having to patch system files. Simply activate the xposed module in xposed installer and reboot your device, so that the changes can take place, and only then you install the games apk and copy the data folder to /sdcard/android/obb.
>If you dont have xposed, then you must apply the Android Patch manually with Lucky Patcher, and you probably also need to replace the Playstore with the modified one from chelpus. (thats why the xposed way is preferable and more hassle free) Also here you only install the apk after you have done the patching, otherwise it won't work.
>If you did everything correctly, then the game should pass without a problem the authentication window at the start (it takes a little time) If the error message appears, (which is immediately) then you definitely did something wrong and have to check the steps again.
