Is this thing any good? I gave my bro a psp for emulation but snes emulation is shit on it. He wants it portable, so I figured I'd just get him this then.

New3DS is better.

That thing is only portable in the barest sense, the cartridges stick way the fuck out the top, and there's fucking horrible blur on the screen. Maybe I'm thinking of something else. Not too much point in carrying around a "portable" system when you still need to carry around a stack of fuckhuge cartridges.

If you're decently good with computers, pick up a new3ds (in box, not used) and head over to >>>/vg/hbg . My personal favorite console is the japanese or australian black LL (non-XL), but if you're a burger the black XL is the easiest one to come by.

New-in-box consoles currently on the shelves are guaranteed to be exploitable. Used ones are iffy because normies auto-update to the latest firmwares and the very latest one is not hackable (yet??)

You will need a microSD of at least 8 GiB size (32, 64 GiB strongly recommended), a small phillips-head screwdriver, and at least 5 hours for your first-time setup.

I can personally vouch that the n3ds plays basically all the games I want to play at full speed.

There are also some android-based made by GPD and some other company, but I can't vouch for them personally.

He has an N3DS, but better yet I even read there's a way to inject roms into existing bought VC games. Though I imagine the results will vary from game to game since they are proprietary emulators. I'm absolutely certain he's at 11.0 as well for fucks sake.

Nope. You have to be on 10.5, or 10.7 + buy extra hardware in order to set up the hack for the first time.

Once you're all set up (it's complicated), you can set it up so your console is on a fake 11.0 and you can still play online and shit.

Bottom line though is that there were a solid FIVE MONTHS where your shit was hackable but if you're on 11.0 you missed the boat, kiddo.

You can hold your breath that maybe 11.0 will get cracked soon, I heard some rumors. If he cares about that sort of thing he should be using an alternative DNS so that at least he's guaranteed to stay on that one and not upgrade past it.

Go to >>>/vg/hbg , mention you're on 11.0 and prepare to get meme'd on hard

I bought one for my brother as a Christmas gift 2 or 3 years ago. It works fine but there's a mod you need to do on the D-pad to make it work correctly. You can't do fireballs in Street Fighter 2 for shit unless you put a rounded peg behind the D-pad, because otherwise it's really easy to press all 4 directions at once.

It's a very impressive handheld overall and even though the material quality isn't quite Nintendium level, it very much looks the part of an official Nintendo product and it feels solid. I never tried running a flash cart on it so I couldn't tell you if it works or not.
