Metal Slug since 3 days ago.
found out that people play it just to be played and even the WR runs in every difficulty have plenty of time saves.
I already cut over 5 seconds on mission one on the arcade version which will translate in even more on the Steam one, since there are differences in game mechanics which on PC are more loose.

I also think to star /vr/ runs channel just for this board,I think few people here will be interested.

No. Cheat codes are intentionally put into a game. Glitches involve exploiting gameplay mechanics in ways the people who made the game couldn't fathom.

Shit, some glitches used to beat a game quickly are more difficult than just beating the fucking game via the normal path.

>> No.3240812

>>3240780

I'm not that guy but I get what he's saying.

Saying you "beat" Ocarina of Time in 30 minutes because you skipped literally like 90% of the game doesn't feel impressive or interesting.

I think the most interesting speedruns are the ones that are largely devoid of glitches. I don't think DarkSouls 3 is particularly interesting to play, but the speedrun is kind of cool because you're seeing the vast majority of the game in about an hour.

For me personally it makes me feel calm, thats the only way how i can describe it.

Going into speedruning in order to gain views on twitch or youtube but not loving the game is stupid and it is why you consider it repetitive possibly because you did this at some point.

pure skill perfectly executed. Like you could do, but better.
You are impressed by a football or baseball player because he can do what you can do (throwing a ball, receiving, diving, running, etc ...) but better. You know how he has done this, this is how it works. Glitches are just going through a pixel or hitting it repeatedly, something you are not supposed to know first.

Glitched (or tool assisted) speedruns are how to kick the ass of a computer. Glitchless are skilled.

Playing with glitches raises the skill ceiling way beyond what the original game could. Perfect execution of unintentional glitches is so much more difficult than just playing normally.

I know you are jealous, and I hear your butthurt, but it isn't cheating. Speedrunners are usually amazing at the games they play, and that is just a fact.

Why does this board have fags like this on it, the rest of the internet is for you people. We get it, you're edgy, and hip, and not into that whole traditional life thing maan. I wonder if the idea of marrying someone after high school seems scary to you because you haven't graduated yet..

Hahaha what a pathetic fucking cocksucker. It's not losers being hateful, it's losers and everybody else being real. You traded your whole life minus first 16 years for wiping shit, getting woken up from screaming, trying to raise your little shitheads properly and failing miserably, selling your soul for college money and then likely having them return your house so they can play vidya.
And that with a nice fat possibility of your gf cheating with guise, who are going to have literally hundreds of pussies like her and actually fresh.

I guess my question is, are there any easy and interesting speed games to get into? And how much do you practice speedrunning?

>> No.3246286

>>3246279
Metroid games. Really any of them, they're very easy to get into. Marble Madness for the 360 or pc is also a fantastic speed running game. There's just SOOO many intentional and unintentional tricks for people of any skill level. And speed running is incredibly time consuming. I used to speedrun doom back in the day and am responsible for several small tricks (n wall running, plasma bumping) but it was nearly a full time thing. Like no joke 5+ hours every day. Its very consuming but also extremely satisfying

Ill use a name for this Q&A

Easy and interesting are kind in the eye of the beholder, so it would depend on your specific interests. Some people think JRPG speedruns are the most interesting because of the complexity of routing, some people think games like Super Metroid are the most interesting runs because of the complexity of execution/movement. Some people obviously have preferences other than those. Regarding difficulty, typically the "easiest", or more specifically the most simplistic kinds of speedruns are 2D platformers. They require little improvisation and are pretty binary in most circumstances regarding what you should do to go fast. On the other hand, some games require knowledge of a shit ton of backup strats for a ton of situations at the same time requiring very skill demanding movement.

Practice is kind of hard to describe. I have several records in many games and I almost never practice, but the games I play are games where the best way to improve really is to just "git gud". I also do time attack in individual levels using the in game timer so that kind of helps me improve at the fundamentals of the game without needing to dedicate practice sessions. Some games require more practice, such as ones with a ton of precise visual cues and difficult glitches/tricks.

If you listed a bunch of your favorite games that you could see yourself trying to speedrun maybe, I could speak to each one's specific qualities as a speedrun and what demands it has. What I think is most important to say is that speedrunning has the misconception of requiring a million hours of autism when in fact you can do it even 5 hours a week and still be competitive in very active games. You just need to make good use of that time (and being naturally good at games also helps a lot too)

>>3239805

same here. I'm also getting to be a pretty decent Battletoads runner.

>> No.3246325

>>3246301

Thanks for the detailed post.

I meant easy as in, not many super precise tricks/glitches. Games where speedrunning them mostly means "git gud" I suppose. And interesting was a pointless descriptor in retrospect.

One of my main concerns was needing to practice for 3-4 hours a day and that was the main thing keeping me from getting into it.

Some of my favorite games are:
DKC2
Phantasy Star Online
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles

>> No.3246339

>>3246325
DKC2 is the only one of those three that I know much about, but it pretty difficult if you want to reach the upper echelons of the leaderboards. There are a ton of super precise tricks that you lose up to minutes if you fail and a majority of levels even without such glitches require a dedicated and sustained practice effort to improve at. That is kind of a trend with platformers in general though... much of the things you do require many visual cues and super precise inputs. DKC2 just has the added burden of having Ocarina of Time style glitches in several levels on top of being supremely difficult to play optimally. I would say its easily in the 95+ percentile of all games regarding how much practice you would need to be good at the game. If you just wanted to be super casual and never do the hard glitches, it would be a different story though.

The other two games I would imagine the challenge would be all in the routing and the knowledge required for each battle or whatever. The act of learning the speedrun and the backup strats for everything would take a great deal of time, but run itself after you did learn it may not be all that bad

>> No.3246368

>>3246339

I actually gave DKC2 a shot a while ago and I definitely bit off more than I could chew. I could already casually beat the game pretty quickly but the difference between casually beating the game quickly and speedrunning it was astounding.

I'll do some research on the other two games then and see if they'll be easy enough to speedrun.

>> No.3246381

>>3246368
Yeah I was in the exact same boat. I was speedrunning only for a few months before I tried out DKC2. It's notoriously hard to pick up because of all the hard shit you have to do for an even remotely good time. Most players start learning shit in World 1/2 and it's not too bad, but when they get to World 3, they gave up (this was me). The rest of the game isn't any easier either.

But yeah I would recommend talking to the runners for the other games. You can surely find their twitch channels from the speedrun.com leaderboards if you don't follow them already.

I challenge you to race the Rappy boardgame event from PSO. That thing is a fucking nightmare, watching somebody attempt to speedrun it would be hilarious.

On a more serious note our old group Skiifree used to compare challenge mode scores and we got pretty competitive. Whatever you decide to race, try and get yourself a rival if you can.

If you're still around, are there any runs without a really strong emphasis on mechanics? I enjoy watching speedruns, but I've never been able to get into them because it feels like there's very little decision making, which is my favorite part of most games.

>> No.3246467

>>3246451
Runs high on decision making are typically RPGs and certain miscellaneous runs of all genres that have a high amount of variability, mostly due to RNG. For example, Doom speedruns require lots of skill but also are so random (weapon damage, enemy damage, enemy movement) that you really have to be at the top of your decision making game to survive when something goes wrong or other than expected. Doom is typically the best example of a game that requires both high movement skill and decision making simultaneously, making it a considerable challenge to excel at. RPGs, while usually being the "thinking man's" speedrun, often aren't all that challenging to execute as you are usually just selecting things in a menu. There are exceptions to everything though of course.

>> No.3246475

>>3246467
People also sometimes speedrun RTS and even MMO shit too which also falls into the more decision making category. I certainly think these kinds of speedruns as well as any RPG you may fancy are really comfy to both watch and run. Extensively routing a complicated speedrun and having to always think on your feet are underrated. Narrowly avoiding disaster because you conjured up some insane backup strat can be just as satisfying as playing like a god at some super skillful game. It always depends on the person though.

>> No.3246496

>>3246451
You'd still need to have a good grasp of all the tricks but Bingo runs are amazing for variety and decision making, Ocarina of Time being the best example I can think of.

If you aren't familiar with the concept, a bingo card is populated with goals from that game. Things like get the Master Sword or Beat Phantom Ganon. Everyone participating in that race gets the same card and you usually have some time beforehand to plan your route. The goal obviously being to score Bingo by finishing goals in order to complete a line.

I find these runs to be the most fun, since everyone usually has a different approach depending on what their strengths are or what they believe to be the most efficient.
