What draws you to the retro consoles?

Most games made nowadays are shitty and reliant on generic, boring gameplay.

360 won't be retro because the gameplay is fundamentally the same as all modern games. Maybe in 30 years when everything is VR any form of gaming on a 2D display will be "retro", but that'd be more from a technology standpoint than gameplay standpoint.

Uh what? N64 and PS1 were a huge departure from and entirely incomparable to the 2D based consoles prior. Literally a fraction of games play similarly, those being choppy experimental 3D games in the 4th gen and the few entirely 2D games in the 5th.

Things nobody said ever.

There's a clear delineation between the older arcade-oriented style of game design and the newer more immersive and cinematic style of game design that emerged with the advent of 3D. The first "non-retro" games emerged in the 5th gen (and even earlier), but the trend took hold in the 6th gen and you can clearly see the differences between most 2d and 3d games.

When VR goes mainstream it will likely represent another shift in game design that will relegate pre-VR 3d games into their own category. We'll probably think of them as "modern games" much like how "modern art" refers mostly to midcentury works.

this,

I am invested, each console I own is like a ring on a tree. I may have outgrown them but they are a piece of me now. (looking at you handhelds) . The internet and the community has grown at the same time I did so it is nice finding new games to play or neat accessories I didn't even know about.

Never left retro games.
Bit the fact that most modern gaming is so focussed on polygons over wonderfully drawn sprites and noone seems to like making great
Beat em ups and platformers in a 2d style anymore.

>> No.3233115

Like many here, I never stopped playing them. I still have my SNES that my dad gave me when I was 5, my PS2 was mostly used to play PS1 games, I got really into Genesis in high school and in college my friends and I played more N64 than Xbox360.

I'm one of those weirdos that actually really likes some newer games. I love PC games like KSP, Mount & Blade and the Souls games, but I still prefer the platformers, fighters and shmups from the retro generations.

They still played like retro games. That was the bit I was getting at. I bought a PS1 day one. I know.

I like games. There are good and bad games no matter what year it is.

You would think it's stupid to say old games are bad because they're old, right? Then why do people say new games are shit because...it's gen 6? That sounds pretty ignorant to me.

I cringe a little when people play primary for nostalgia. For me, I was raised playing a certain style of game and at one point the industry made a switch I couldn't really adapt too. New games are far to enveloped in story and theatrics. I'm a "I can play 20 minutes of Virtua Fighter before work" kind of guy. Sure I love rpgs and stuff but I prefer the rapid bursts of gaming. I love looking at new games after I've binged on old consoles but I can never get into them. From power to in game is 15 minutes. Could you imagine if your toaster asked to a litany of questions and danced an unskippable jig before you could actually put bread in it? THIS is why I play retro games, they are designed better for me and my lifestyle.

The 360 already feels old. So does the PS3. Anything that isn't cutting edge current gen feels pretty old if you're into computers and tech. Dude, those consoles are probably like 10+ years old now. There's more time between now and then than there was between then and the N64 coming out.

>>3232943
The 360/"Xbox One"/PS4 are just extensions of the PS1 and N64. They're fundamentally the same in gameplay due to the major transition to mainstream, commonplace 3D taking over and pushing out 2D. Maybe you could argue there's another generation gap for online play, but that's about it.

I stopped keeping up with consoles after N64. The 6th gen seemed pretty bland at the time (except GTA3, which I knew my parents wouldn't allow). So I just started filling out my N64 library getting games dirt cheap at Hollywood Video's clearance section. Plus around the same time I was getting back into SNES thanks to GBA ports and discovering emulation, and original copies of everything except RPGs were still super cheap.

I don't have anything against modern gaming (I've liked a lot that I've played secondhand), I'm just not interested in spending hundreds of dollars on a console and sixty bucks on a game when I can play shit I enjoy just as much for a fraction of that.

Usually it's the quick plug'n'play aspect, the difficulty and the fact I'm a sucker for good 2D graphics.
Unless we're talking RPGs in which case some had a bigger focus on number-crunching.

This shit is making me cringe. Video games have not changed at all and I'll assume you weren't that interested in gaming if you hadn't noticed how "generic" popular stuff were.

I don't hate modern video games but there's a lot of things about them I find a hassle, what with DLC, DRM, overemphasizing story, pandering, things like that.

Sometimes I just want to get away from that sort of thing and turn to simpler times until I'm ready to brave all the bullshit again.

Aw, OP is annoyed that his childhood memories with the Xbox can't be discussed on /vr/. Cute!

>What draws you to the retro consoles?

Probably the fact I own them since they came out so I know their catalogues pretty well, yet can still find new stuff to play in them daily, or revisit old games I haven't played in ages, or replaying favorites.
