Try yahoo auctions (might only ship to japan so you're going to need some broker). Don't expect to find broken and beaten CD units that work though.

Even the less fragile main unit might be in need of replacment caps or worse.

Eh, CD unit is worth it though. Just be prepared to pay a little bit more to get one that has been tested to work. Optimally you'd get a refurbished one, but that gets really expensive really quick.

Definitely a number of good games, though I think I prefer the genesis.

I've been trying out Magicoal recently. It's all right (cheap too), but playing an RPG in another language can be a little tedious. I thought it was going to be like Zelda, but it's more linear and broken up into small areas, which isn't as nice.

At least I can enjoy the really sloppily-drawn cutscenes and great music.

In terms of innovation, library of games, and good games.

It'll be one of the 5th gen consoles. Probably be down to PlayStation vs N64.

desu I'd just take the hit and get a region modded/refurbished PCE Duo-(RX) from doujindance. You'll have the ability to play everything except Arcade Card games and SuperGrafx games, and it'll last for a long-ass time. I've had mine for 5+ years, and I only just recently had to twiddle a potentiometer because audio was dropping out.

not as many platformers. Some are really impressive like Bonk 2, new adventure island, and Rondo, but nothing as good as Mario world

Agreed on this. I have a ton of Snes games I love and own, maybe 35 PC Engine titles that I absolutely adore, and maybe a bit over a dozen Genesis games that I really enjoy. Sadly greed. There are some **decent** ones, like Valis, Kris no Bouken, and Dynastic Hero (which is just a baby-mode diff. shitty reskin of the superior Wonder Boy in Monster World)... but most of them are mediocre or plain shitty, like Fiend Hunter, Future Boy Conan, or Valis 2.

There is so much garbage on the CD unit it is impressive.* I don't even think the Mega-CD had as much shovelware or poorly-made games, and that thing was Sewer Shark City.

*inb4 asspain: Dungeon Explorer 2, Image Fight 2, Cotton, Ys, Popful Mail, and Brandish are all excellent. So yes i know there are good games.

I've seen some mixed reviews for job he does, especially at pcenginefx and sega-16 forums. Everyone recommends to get used Duo-R and replace lens yourself.

>> No.3239476

>>3239467
He does more than just replace the laser, he also does RGB modding and adds a region switch mod. For all of that, it's quite the deal.

Also the only places that criticize him are PCEngineFX and Sega-16, and those guys are either modders themselves with an agenda, or they're jealous the guy has a good little business for himself fixing up junk Duo-Rs from Hard-Offs.

I have a Duo -R of his, and his reliability and availability and communication are second to none.

At the very least, fan translations have allowed people to enjoy Ys IV (which many consider superior to the SNES game), Xak III, and there is good progress being made on the Legend of Xanadu games.

I would love for some more PCE CD RPGs to be translated; there is a lot of potential: Sol Moonarge, Seiya Monogatari, Neo Metal Fantasy... Preferably in that order!!

The character art in that game (aside from the hero's dorky dragon form) is so damn good.

On the plus side, Emerald Dragon is in the slow, slow process of being translated, but it has been on hiatus for about a year now.

It'll probably be some time before the game is translated; I hope the folks working on Xanadu will turn their attention to finishing ED afterwards.

Pc Engine was the weeb console by the time

>> No.3245000

No doubt; you have to work hard to separate the good weeb from trash weeb. It does exist!

Heck I even see a couple of good games in that montage.

>lol at two images of Fray, normal and chibi; hey I guess one for each Xak game
>Melvy from Magicoal; this game is all right
>Ki from Tower of Druaga, one of my favorite games on the system
>Max's daughter from Macross 2036
>store chick lady from Space Fantasy Zone
>Elena from Ys III (though you are really better off playing Oath in Felghana)
>Bonk from Joe and Mac: Cavemen Ninja

I guess it's a bad sign I recognize so many characters on this spread. Not counting the games on there that aren't good (Moonlight Lady*, Metamor Jupiter, and the endless deluge of VNs/ Digi Comics).

*well it's not bad, but do your characters have to give out a high-pitched HIYA! every time you attack? Gets old real fast.

I was recently awakened to the awesomeness of PC Engine CD Rom games. Instead of all the FMV bullshit of PC Gaming from that era, you get crisp sprites, while the extra storage is used on things that matter, like CD music and voiced dialogue.

Incidentally, it's the reason why I've loved Snatcher for years, but I didn't realize that there were so many other Japanese games that did it as well.

Zero Wing is completely crazy with a different intro and stuff. It's rad!

It's decent for what it's worth, but it's a CD game with a lot of animated cutscenes that was crammed into a cartridge, so you lose a chunk of the experience.

>>3245017
PS2? Really? That thing was so ubiquitous in households with WW2 shooters, Grand Theft Auto III, Madden, etc. etc. etc. Far from weeaboo - maybe only on 4chan where people obsess over weeb games to begin with.
