Is anyone on here crazy and rich enough to collect Neo-Geo games?

What's it like? What kind of experiences have you had collecting for it?

I wish. Back in the early days of /vr/ I helped a guy negotiate a deal where he bought pic related from an older couple though.

>tfw I've been collecting for decades and have never found a deal like this

He almost got it for chump change but he got too excited on the initial phone call and triggered them to check online prices but I helped him reign it in and use my tried and true negotiation tactics and he ended up getting it for around $600

That Metal Slug X alone is more than worth the price. Very envious.

>> No.3218104

who actually bought this stuff back in the day? were there adult gamers who dumped their entire paychecks into it? the children of the super rich? maybe some normal families that somehow made a boneheaded* decision and their kids only got one new game a year if they were lucky?

there aren't trustworthy numbers (or even estimates) of how many total they sold.

*not boneheaded if they held on to it. but way less fiscally responsible at the time than getting a snes or genesis.

Rich people and wasteful people. When your console costs more than most kids' collection for the other console...you fucked up hard.

Myself and a couple of others on this board have MVS cabs or consolized MVS.

>what's it like
It's like owning another console but you get to play some of the games you could only play on the arcade.

Owning a cab is a bit different from a console I think. There's just something about playing an arcade game on a real cabinet that you can't mimic.

It's gonna kinda suck though because I have a sunken living room that I'm going to raise when I redo my kitchen in a month or two, so I'm gonna have to move it and it weighs like 300+lbs.

>What kind of experiences have you had collecting for it

Bought my cab and 4 games on craigslist.
Everything else is eBay auctions because the likelihood of finding more MVS games in the wild is basically zero and my local craigslist is a total shitshow.

CD systems are cheap and so are the games. You can also burn discs. I have a few consoles and maybe a dozen original games. I figure when the required mods become easily available this will be the best option. In the mean time if you can live with the load times and want the cheapest option it's the way to go.

MVS systems are also cheap and many games are "reasonable" You can also get multi carts. I've got an MVS as well. This is really your best choice if you can afford a little more.

AES game prices are just silly. I have an AES but only a handful of carts. There is really just no point collecting for this unless you believe prices will go up for ever and plan on cashing out at some point.

luckily, as another anon said, there's nothing to stop you from burning ISO's. It would be neat if someone came along and figured out how to rearrange the data (like on some Dreamcast games) to cut down on the load times a bit (not expecting a miracle, but it'd be neat)

CD-Z's have faster load times than regular CD's out of the box. According to the 3.3 change log, Uni Bios makes only some models of CD-Z's load even faster than stock (no way to tell what models are supported though)

Dion is great. He's basically the devil incarnate, in the form of a guido "toughguy", to the nuts on Neo-Geo.com. His stunts like shredding original AES inserts to replace them with NGF "corrected" ones, and slapping NGF stickers on everything, are masterstrokes of trolling that drove the anal Neo community ballistic.

>> No.3219303

>>3218621
>technical reason
I'm sure there is otherwise someone would have just done it. But that doesn't mean the drive couldn't be replaced. People have done work on this but I think the fact that not a lot of these were sold makes it not that interesting.
Hopefully the trend of hipsters paying silly prices for drive replacements will encourage someone to actually make one though. A Neo Geo CD loading from a SSD would be amazing, and not just because it would totally shit all over AES collectors

The collectors you despise do things like release prototypes and document shit. That unreleased MVS game was dumped and released by, get this, a collector.

Collectors are far more likely to contribute to the gaming community that investors/resellers/businessmen. I'm sure you'll respond with some "haha I don't care about that I just want my lulz," so whatever.

No I think it had belonged to the man who bought it new for himself and then his wife was making him get rid of it since it had just been stored for twenty years or some shit. She was literally telling him something like $2 a game when he first talked to her on the phone but he was like suspicious it was a trap or they were bootlegs or some dumb shit and didn't jump right on top of it then that got THEM suspicious and they started trying to talk eBay prices with him. I told him he needed to go and see that shit in person with a BUNCH of cash and it worked out for him.
