It's that time motherfuckers. DQ up to VII to be discussed.

Best Game?

Best Protag?

Best Waifu?

Best Boss?

Best recruitable monster in V and VI?

I'm actually towards the end of DQV on the SNES right now myself, about to enter the Demon World. I should probably do some grinding because Bianca is underlevelled and underequipped, plus there are some more monsters I'm looking to recruit.

Tie between V and II. V had a much more interesting story in my opinion because of how you follow this character from youth to old age. A lot of little things in that game really captured me for some odd reason. As for II I think it had the best challenge. I also really liked the character designs for some odd reason.
>Best Protag?
V's. VI's comes at a close second though just because he has a bare semblance of personality.
>Best Boss?
I'm really not sure. I really like every final boss in the games if that counts. All their designs/fights are cool.
>Best recruitable
Honestly >>3210525
All the slime anythings in DQ were really good companions.
>Best Waifu?
I think Debora is cute and a really good character but is only in the DS version so I guess she doesn't count.
Bianca is usually who I pick though on SNES.

Not in Dragon Quest VI, no sir.
The Slime Knight is a good recruitable monster because it's compatible with human equipments and has healing spells, but in Dragon Quest VI anyone can learn healing spells, plus Lizzie is also compatible with human equipments, and has ridiculous stats.
Lizzie is better than all your heroes in everything, HP, MP, attack, defense, agility, wisdom, plus she already comes with one of the secret classes unlocked, she's absolutely broken.

I'd also argue that the King Cureslime is the best DQ V monster, but that's for a different reason.

Is reclassing in 3 really necessary?

I'm right before Necrogond and even though I can beat them many monsters like the troll can oneshot my priest/wizard with its critical hit and if I got ambushed by the blizzard spamming clouds I'm basically fucked. I'm not really sure if I should grind/reclass or just push through.

I played 3 for the first time on GBC recently and reclassing felt pretty optional.
If you're doing something like two melee + caster, you might as well make the caster a sage to get all the spells.

>> No.3211170

Yeah, currently the only thing in my mind is just making my wizard/priest a sage. I'm not sure how to reclass my soldier, maybe I shouldn't. Thanks.

>> No.3211209

>>3211105
No, in fact most players I know will only reclass one of their characters to sage.

Fighters don't earn any MP and have pathetic wisdom, mages turned into fighters have weak spells, and priests turned into fighters don't have MP enough to be reliable.
On the other hand mages and priests don't have acess to strong equipments, so if you turn a fighter into a spellcaster, they will still remain pretty weak anyway.

Turning a fighter into a fighter (martial artist/warrior) also isn't necessary, because they will already hit the stats cap without reclassing.
Also turning a mage into a priest or a priest into a mage is a waste, because the sage has acess to better equipments, so you may as well just get a sage.

tl;dr just get one or two sages

It's real sweet is my opinion, but I never played the PSX original. The characters are fun and the game just goes on and on, but it works well thanks to its episodic structure. You go to some new place, end up in the middle of a tragedy and do your best to resolve the situation, then later get to see how it all turned out. The writing is pretty clever making you care about each location, its residents and their stories, and if you enjoy that stuff there's just so much of it.

Serious contender for favorite RPG for me, it's at the very least within top 3.

Helmet is the right answer.

The armor is a waste, everyone that can equip it can also equip a stronger armor that you can just buy in the shop of the next town.

Shield isn't useless, but it's very underrelming. Assuming you will give the 2 Metal King Shield to Mireyu/Milly and Chamoro/Nevan, then all the other characters that would benefit from the shield can also equip the Ogre Shield+, that you can buy as much as you want and is just as strong.

The helmet on the other hand is the best helmet Chamoro/Nevan can equip, simple as that.

Yuji Horii announced DQVII and VIII for 3DS were getting localized, before SquareEnix announced it. He also let slip that Dragon Quest XI is going to be on the Nintendo NX, which SquareEnix quickly covered up. But as far as I know, he didn't hint that DQXI was going to be localized.

I am hoping that the increase in recent DQ releases will mean we're returning to the PS2/DS days, where we got more constant releases. The current head of SquareEnix of Japan seems to be moving away from focusing on Final Fantasy and more towards releasing all games to the west. But it remains to be seen if that actually happens. As a fun exercise, I am going to guage how much I would have spent on SquareEnix games this gen vs how much I actually did spend.

Games I have bought so far:
Final Fantasy XIV: ARR - $42
Final Fantasy XIV - Heavensward: $30
Final Fantasy XIV Subscription: $0
Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy - $40
Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy: Curtain Call - $40
Dragon Quest Heroes - $60

Total: $212.00

Games I would have bought so far if they were released to the west:
Dragon Quest X - $60
Dragon Quest X: First Expansion - $40
Dragon Quest X: Second Expansion - $40
Dragon Quest X Subscription (estimation of 3 years worth of subs) - $432
Dragon Quest VII Remake - $40
Dragon Quest VIII Remake - $40
Slime MoriMori Dragon Quest 3: Taikaizoku to Shippo Dan - $40
Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry's Wonderland Remake - $40
Dragon Quest Monsters 2 Remake - $40
Theatrhythm Dragon Quest - $40
Dragon Quest Heroes - $60
Final Fantasy XIV: ARR - $42
Final Fantasy XIV - Heavensward: $30
Final Fantasy XIV Subscription: $0
Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy - $40
Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy: Curtain Call - $40

Total: $884.00

Well, I guess I can thank SquareEnix for helping me save money.

The current head of SquareEnix of Japan seems to be moving away from focusing on Final Fantasy and more towards releasing all games to the west. But it remains to be seen if that actually happens. The politics in SquareEnix are so mind boggling that we can never predict what they'll do. And even a secondary localization manager seems to be able to usurp the wishes of the CEO of the company.

Since we're getting stuff even more-niche stuff like Romancing SaGa 2 and I Am Setsuna now, I'm pretty confident we'll get DQXI. I don't expect us to get DQMJ3 though.

Not in the Famicom and Super Famicom versions
but in the Game Boy Color version changing classes
is necessary due to a super hidden hard boss called Divine
Dragon which can give you the Rubyss Sword (the most powerful weapon in the game), beating the boss even requires you to drop the main hero in favor of a better warrior mostly because the hero
can not change classes. Divine Dragon is like pic related but golden.

yeah, the patch adds them. First glitch is in the above pic. If you talk to that clone Prince he replaces your Prince with his HP and MP stats set back to level 1, though you keep the other stats the same. Wouldn't actually be much of a problem except that it also makes you lose the Princess, and she can't be replaced because the Mirror is gone.

The other glitch is if you rest in the town where the Prince gets sick. When you bring the Leaf to heal him it starts and endless text loop. This one can be bypassed by temporarily playing your save file on an unpatched rom to get through that part.

I think I've heard another NPC causes an endless text loop too but I don't know the exact details.

The most drastic change is in the class system. Basic skills can be retained and carried over when you change, but advanced ones cannot. Also, what skills you have in a class depends on what other class skills you've learned. Also monster classes teach advanced skills of other classes that can be carried over.

It's a pretty complicated affair, but basically it means you can't go all powerful. It's doable, but not as easily as in PS1.

Balzack/Ballsack in Chapter IV for Dragon Quest IV was always a problem for me, but not a huge one, it was mostly as a kid that he was too difficult for me to beat. His second form in Chapter V is a total chump once you have someone in your party with Fullheal. Hell, even doing a solo run with Sofia, I stomped him pretty handily when that spell came into play. The only other bosses that were trouble for me going solo were Psaro (mostly during the phase where he casts a bunch of spells, because he'd nailed me twice with Whack), Foo Yung and Chow Mein, and Aamon on the DS version. The last one there I had to grind up to level 99 to be able to beat him, because when he put me to sleep, I had to be at full health (over 900 HP) to survive the onslaught until the sleep was done.

Empyrea and Captain Crow usually gave me some trouble in VIII, and Dhoulmagus' second form was only hard if you weren't set up right.

The glitch with the prince occurs because of his name. His name is randomly chosen from a set based on the name you enter for the main hero. However, it has a high chance of being "Rolondo" which is 7 characters. DQII on the SNES was built with 6 characters max in mind. This extra character fucks up a lot of things later on.

There are two ways to get around this glitch.

1. Rename the prince to something shorter. Go to the file select screen, pick out your file, then hold Left + Start, and press A, and you should have a naming prompt.

2. Play the GBC version. It's based off of the SNES version and it's portable and quite good.

Personally here's how I like it.
First, give everyone 1 rank in both priest and mage the moment you unlock the abbey so everyone has an 80 damage magic attack and heal. Optional: give everyone 1 rank in dancer so they can stop a foe for one turn if they're not being useful otherwise.
Oh, and once you get Amos say goodbye to having Ashlynn or Nevan in your main party ever again since they're so weak. Give the ghent staff to whoever you want healing (i.e. whoever is doing the least damage/buffing) and don't feel constrained by classes since without grinding you won't get multiheal/hustle dance until late game anyway and fullheal isn't needed until then either. Personally though I made Hero a sage because magic is strong early on and kazing on the only person brought back after a wipe is godly. I made Amos a ranger, later replaced him with Healie who I also made a ranger. Fun fact: Call to Arms is fucking awesome assuming the foe doesn't resist summons. Carver was a monk and from there you can go wither paladin or gladiator, do note that going gladiator you'll get hatchet man along the way for metal slimes and paladin gets a hit-all attack earlier (thin air vs boulder toss). Milly, Ashlynn and Nevan were all also made sages because if you aren't gonna attack physically then at least sit back as an MP pool for out of battle healing, or in battle in Milly's case. You could make her a luminary and get hustle dance instead of waiting for multiheal on a sage, it would also make your team look more balanced what with sage hero. Ashlynn going sage serves a double purpose since you can switch her in and magic burst nuke a team off of high sage mp when you're desperate.
Terry sucks but looks cool just give him the sage's stone (win it at the fashion show) and have him either use that or his sunderbolt blade, or maybe just wind sickles. His class doesn't matter really, gladiator does have survivability though. Maybe go ranger with him too. Lizzie stronk as anything.

>> No.3260982

>>3260913
The Dragon class does everything the Gladiator class does, but better, there's no reason to teach Lizzie it.

Training more than one slime may be a waste of time, but remember that you can't learn Omniheal through the class system, only Healie and Curie can learn it.

I'd have the Hero as Luminary and Milly as Sage, but your team will do the job, there isn't really an obvious best team like in FFV.

Since lightning spells from the hero class are costy, I think it would be a good idea to have access to costless skills, so the Hero won't run out of MP too easily.

Maybe this isn't necessary at all and I just value healing power too much.

From wikipedia:

> In the original 1995 Super Famicom version of Dragon Quest VI, certain types of monsters can be randomly recruited if they are defeated with a Monster Master in the party. In the 2010 DS remake, this system has been removed, instead, there are certain Slimes that will join you once you accomplish a specific task. Lizzie still remains recruitable.

It isn't because DQVI is a class based game. You learn all your skills via the class system, at the end of the day the monsters were just unecessary extra bodies. They have low level cap, they don't do anything different from humans, their equipments are more limited, you don't even need them to fill your party because the game already gives you 8 members.

No and no.
DQVII has a class system similar to DQVI, but besides human classes, there is monster classes.
There are some monsters in DQVII that when defeated will drop an item that allows your character to learn that monster's class. Like the human classes, you can learn basic monster classes to unlock intermediate and advanced monster classes.
Needless to say, monster classes are much stronger than human classes, but also real pain in the ass to master.

In the 3DS version, when one of your characters is using a monster class, their sprites will look like that monster.

Man, DQII (on NES) has come to a fucking crawl. I have three crests but this shit has become a slog. I've had to do way more grinding than I had to in the first DQ. Since I've been traveling by ship, it's hard for me to find a good grinding spot: one where I can get a lot of EXP but not having my party members die each battle. And when they do, not every town has someone who can revive. Fucking tedious. I'm lingering around Osterfair and the sea around it, since sea slug encounters provide a lot of EXP. It's a fun game, but I'm really annoyed at some of these things.

Just wait for 3DS for 7, the remake is so much better than the original it's not even funny, and I'm assuming you'll be getting a completely new translation instead of the awful original one.

Why not just play SNES versions of 1-3? Square Enix mobile ports never look nor control better than what you can get on an emulator, and they care so little for QA they might not even run on your Android device. Just run them in Snes9x with RetroArch is what I'd do unless you want to buy mostly to support English language DQ releases (I sure don't since mobile is on the bottom fucking list of systems I'd like to see them on)

4 is the only game that actually has an advantage when played on Android for English speakers, since they didn't bother translating party chat for the DS version and just removed it instead.

For 5 you might want the PS2 version instead, it has better graphics and music but lacks the new waifu on DS. Unless you want to marry the only DQ girl who'll abuse you worse than Maribell the PS2 remake is probably better, I think there's an English fan translation available too.

>What versions of 2, 3 and 4 do you guys recommend? Also, is there any big difference between the NES localization of 3 and the GBC localization?

I enjoyed the NES and GB/C versions of DQ2 mutually. The GB/C version adds some new lines and other bonus content, and balances a few things to make the game somewhat easier, or at least faster.

The GBC version of 3 differs a decent bit from the original. I haven't played all the way through it, but they added in a whole personality matrix for the hero. Choices you make throughout the game change your character's alignment. There's also a lot of bonus content in that one, including Tiny Medal collecting.

As for the localization quality of 3, I would like to know more about this myself. I believe it received a T rating in English, which implies Enix might have left in the more "mature" content that was originally planned but dropped due to Nintendo's meddling. There's a common rumor that a gay bar was supposed to appear in DQ3, but since no sources were ever cited, it could be an old Internet myth.

Can't really comment on 4, as the only localized versions I know of are for NES and DS. Wasn't there also a PS1 remake that wasn't translated?

>Square Enix Testing the Waters for Dragon Quest 11 Localization

>It's been four years since Dragon Quest X launched in Japan, and still it has not been localized for the West. However, the franchise's developers, speaking in a recent interview, said that they want to bring it over--but there are difficulties.

>"We want to bring X over," producer Yu Miyake said. "We definitely would love to bring it over, it's just with Dragon Quest 10, aside from the immense amount of text involved in the localization, there's also the operational aspect to it, being an online game. Square Enix is doing Final Fantasy XIV [in the West] so there is that possibility. But it's just a huge challenge to bring that game over.

>"But with Dragon Quest VII, we were able to bring it over because a lot of fans were asking for it, sending letters, asking for it to be released and localized. So with the other games I just mentioned, and Dragon Quest XI... If more fans can voice their opinions on it and we see that people really want the game, there may be a possibility we'll be able to make it."

>He added that with the recent launches of Dragon Quest Builders and Dragon Quest Heroes, the team is hoping to reach more players through the use of different genres. The team hopes to build the player base and interest in the series in preparation for the launch of Dragon Quest XI, which will be a more traditional RPG. They are also hoping that fans who want localized versions of Dragon Quest games are more vocal, so they can legitimize the work going into localization.

And after a long battle filled with spamming cold breath/blistering breath, Psaro goes down.
This isn't my A team here btw (except Maya), everyone died after Kiryl ran out of enough mp to use multiheal and the sage's stone jsut wasn't cutting it. These guys were only here to take the final turn. How would you describe the meaning of DQ1 in Japan?
Is it the generic video game?

>> No.3305220

>>3305142
Dragon Quest is the Japanese image of "JRPG" just as Final Fantasy VII is the English image.

"Generic" isn't the word I would use, but I suppose that, yes, it works well enough. Kids these days don't really know DQ too well. Super Mario, Pokemon, Yo-kai Watch, and Minecraft are the games I hear them talk about most often. Not that it isn't popular--it is. Kids just don't have instant access to all the DQ games on their current consoles.

You are watching anime that caters to NEETs and otakus, a demographic that would very likely be familiar with DQ.
