And why is she playing as Luigi all by herself?
I actually used to do that because I preferred Luigi.

At the risk of changing the tone too much, I came across this shot. At first I thought it was vintage but these poor Egyptians are just frozen in time. They're so poor they're living with their uncle in his tomb. Tombs are big with Egyptians and they're paid off for the LONG residency

I think there's always been about the same proportion of girls who legitimately like video games to ones who mainly use it as an affectation it's just that gaming in general blew up so much where you used to know 1 real girl gamer and 5 fakes now it's 5 real gamers and 25 fakes which seems worse but isn't really.

Yeah, a quarter on the bezel meant "I got next."

On multiplayer games you'd put your quarter above the player you intended to take. eg: "I got Raph next."

I guess multiple people could line up quarters if there's more than one person waiting for a given game/player but I never really saw that happen. People would sooner go play another game than queue up behind more than one person.

>> No.3195471

see that's what I was thinking, whenever I go to this one crowded barcade and I see a game I want is occupied, I just go play something else.

Granted that's also a freeplay everywhere place, my point is I would expect people to just steal the quarter(s). Though I guess in a big line that could mean getting beaten up by 4-5 guys.

>> No.3195472

It also helped that lineups were the bane of operators. It meant more people in your arcade standing around NOT giving you money. If that was happening you can bet the operator would rotate games to fix that problem as quickly as possible.

No matter how much we try, or how much respect we have for these games, we'll never be able to see them in the same light people of their era saw them. Sorry if I wasn't being clear. When people were playing the NES there wasn't really much sentiment that "Man Atari was so much better" since it wasn't lack of imagination that was holding games back it was real hardware limitations. Some people like my dad felt "Atari is just as good" but nobody made arguments that it was better.

However, I personally did switch over to Atari once in a while to play a few games that I liked that weren't available on NES. Ghostbusters being the number one. It was available on Master System but I didn't know that and I didn't have a Master System anyway when I was still going back. I also played trackball games since NES didn't have one and I would play some paddle games notably Warlords when I would have slumber parties and people didn't want to take turns on the NES.

In my country, boys and girls both played video games about equally. Home consoles outside of Megadrive and, eventually, Playstation weren't popular at all, but arcades were packed with boys and girls playing in about equal number. The difference I noticed, even as a kid, was that girls tended to prefer cute-em-ups, maze chase and puzzle games more than boys did, though there was no shortage of girls playing Centipede, Galaga and Commando just as there wasn't with boys playing Mappy, Liquid Kids and Snow Bros.

I read, however, that the reason that video games skewed so drastically towards boys is because of how toy stores in the US were organised at the time. As I've heard it, when console gaming first arrived on American shores, toy stores were segregated, one half for boys, another for girls, a third for bikes and creative play (blocks/Lego, toy instruments and art toys like Spirograph and Etch-a-Sketch) and the last for infants and toddlers. Edutainment hadn't yet poisoned children's toys.

Toys R Us, Kiddie City and KB Toys, the three largest toy store chains in the US at the time, were trying to figure out where to put console gaming: it's not a bike or creative toy and it's not for infants, so it must be for one gender or the other, right? I mean... girls don't play with action figures and boys don't play with fashion dolls, right? Boys and girls clearly can't have the same toys... what do we do?! Well, lets cram it in the boy's aisles and hope it sticks.

And it did.

If you look at it, early video games weren't at all marketed or geared towards specific gender. That didn't start until the later mid 80s, even if by the early 80s, protagonists in video games were obviously male.

If you gimme some time, I'll try to find the source for that. I read it last summer and I might be able to refind that article.

Sorry. Back. Went out to do things. The reason I couldn't reply immediately was because I was just about to go out when I typed that up earlier.
Anyway, I can't find the original article (which is just as well as it was in French anyway), but I found two English ones that speak to women's involvement in early video games, both playing and designing.

I'm trying to find one that supports my toy store claim, but I'm having difficulty. The French one, if I can find it again, said that in the US, you had your famous video game crash. From the ashes, Nintendo emerged. Nintendo didn't want to sell the NES in toy stores at first but department stores. They ran a mock-up or something of how sales would go if they sold them in the electronics section v the toy section and found the toy section would have been more profitable. Thereafter, toy stores had to decide where to put the games, boy or girl, and Nintendo's marketing department decided to market heavily to boys, so that's where they went.
If sometime after that, the games were relocated to a separate video game department behind a glass case, I can't say. I was not in the US at the time and I can tell you only what I read in the article. Gimme a bit of time to find the info, please.

I found one! An English language article that discusses a lot of the points I made, though the details differ slightly. I'm not sure if it's that the article I read last summer made different points or I simply misremembered, but this article covers a great deal of the same stuff as what I read back then:

http://www.polygon.com/features/2013/12/2/5143856/no-girls-allowed

If you don't want to read the whole article (though you really should), just ctrl+f Nintendo, it should come up to a point where they start to discuss toy aisles and marketing to boys and so on.

you dont walk up to the counter and hold up the line of other customers while you decide which game to get as moms reward for doing well on your report card. no.
you walk to the display case in the boys section of the store, pick your game, get your ticket and take it up front to pay.

But department stores aren't the same thing as toy stores.
They had video game sections at department stores, sure (I remember at Caldor, it was between the jewelry and electronics departments while at Sears and Kmart, it was a sectioned off corner of the electronics department), but at toy stores, they had a video games section right by the boy's aisles with a ticket system, as described above, kinda like how BJ's has now.

You get a ticket with a number on it (or a pad and golf pencil for you to write down the number yourself) and pay for it, then they hand it to you at a little section just beyond the check out.

At least that's how it worked in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Georgia.

I dunno OSU is pretty dense and has the kind of clientele that are looking to have intensely trendy fun while spending exactly their budget every week on it. It would mainly about making the jump from memes to reality... and flagrantly stealing all the signage and everything from actual Super Potato without paying them one thin dime.

Come do something about it fucking nips

Is there such a thing?

I don't know much, but I was under the impression that punk was a 70s reaction to the once idealistic music of the 60s turned into what was perceived as crass and commercialised (to the point where the entire countercultural aesthetic was coopted in popular fashion and Coca Cola adverts).

Have I got that wrong?

>Is there such a thing?
Sure, but their thing was really different from that garish 80s shit. A lot of what they did was more or less reclassified as "protopunk" as a way of reconciling the traditional punk sound from all the weird shit they were doing in the 60s that is hard to classify.

What you have to understand is that people had a hard time discerning rock music from anything that wasn't the standard verse-verse-chorus-verse-chorus-chorus layout of rock in the early part of the 60s. It's easy to look back and say "Oh, those guys were psychedelics, those guys were prog, and those guys were mod rockers, etc." But the sounds they put out are directly traceable as the influences that informed the (sort of) classic punk setup and sound, although by the time the 80s punks took over, they thought that having musical talent and good writing were hallmarks of squares and that stage presence was everything.

As for Britain specifically, you've got guys like The Troggs, The Social Deviants, and even very early (VERY early) The Who.

Less your decade-per-threshold idea, there was an arcade that looked pretty similar to that when I first moved to the area I live in now. It was called Spaceport. They closed a few years after. Rumour had it that the place was actually a front for a Chinese drug ring and it was closed due to a DEA sting which is a shame because it had a huge number of classic games into the 2000s and the only games that cost more than 50¢ US per play were the Bemani games and the competitive table games (air hockey, foosball etc).

I miss you, Spaceport.

Different games had different etiquette. For the most part, no one was going to bezel a quarter for a single player game. Co-op games a quarter on the bezel meant you got next when someone ran out of quarters. Fighting games were Winner stays loser pays style with coins lined up for a ways. I remember that the SF2 cabinet at the local arcade got so packed that they started using a signup sheet and the manager would call out the next player during the previous fight. That lasted up until champion edition came out. By then many of us were heading to the next town over's truck stop to practice the game, and the arcade back home was running regular weekend tournaments.

It's wild how far tech has came. My grandpa told me about the first cable company in the town I grew up in and how they used to not give a shit and just ran lines wherever, often times hanging from branches and such. Apparently every now and then they would run in front of a satellite dish and either fuck up the satellite reception or add channels to the cable package.
