3182539 No.3182539 [Reply] [Original]

So /VR/, I've decided to start purging all of my physical vintage vidya and just switch over to a raspberry pi emulation console. Buying the actual games just gets too damn expensive, and I was never really into it for the whole collectability of it all anyways. What do you think, is this a good idea?

Turf the shit and go the emulation route. I've done so with a soft modded Wii and haven't regretted it. It's all expensive and time consuming and takes up a lot of space...I like spending the time just enjoying the games.

I guess he wants to know if it's a good idea or not, man. Maybe somebody else has done it and regrets it, having some concrete reasons why it was objectively a bad idea, like input lag, bugs or unoptimised emulation.

If we're gonna go down that road, why discuss anything?

Seconding a soft-modded Wii over here. Get a decent CRT like a Sony Wega from a thrift store and add in a modded TvC stick and a decent stereo system and play like you've never played before.

Just keep your favorites. That's what I did and I don't feel I made a bad choice. All the games I play often work exactly the same emulated than on the proper console and I got less stuff to carry around if I need to move for work reasons.
Doesn't sound like a big deal until you have to move all your shit and stuff gets lost or broken by incompetent workers or costs a lot to move it safely. Specially if your work requires to move every few years.

I am surprised that in all those collection threads no one ever mentions the costs and problems of moving. It's not like people is always going to remain static in a single place for a lifetime, and a big collection takes a lot of space. Let's not even get started on moving to different countries...

I've an Xbox and a Wii as my main emulating machines, and I own a PSP- I would prefer the pi if I didn't love Coin-ops so much.

But my main concern is how much electricity it uses and how much background noise it creates, which is the only real downside of the original Xbox for me.

>> No.3184320

Soft modded wii is shit tier for mame the pi is best at coin op support because it has somany different versions of mame. Mame4all the wii uses is old as shit and pi runs that version too. Fba support is good too and you can actually play newer arcade games too. Wii shills fuck off

You're an idiot. This is merely a preferential situation that ties into what works best for him, and could merely try emulating and see how it compares to what he already owns. It didn't need discussion. To draw the parallel that nothing needs discussion from what I said is moronic and wasn't a valid conclusion to draw. It's annoying seeing threads like this brought up for an individual question when there's places where if it REALLY just had to be asked, that he could. There's emulation threads and even a Pi thread or at least there was. Y'all just make a thread for every question you have and it's annoying. Use a preexisting one that has a general topic that will encompass your question.

I did this too. Buying a bunch of different controllers, games, systems, adapters, and so on is just not worth it any more.

Emulation allows you to play the games like the programmers intended - with whatever controller you like on your own PC.

OP here, and first of all no, he's right. I made this thread to see if people had any thoughts on the matter, better alternatives, etc. And that's actually worked for me, because it DID I've me alternatives to a pi console that I feel are worth considering.

Second of all, why are you getting so upset about me posting a thread for this on here? Frankly it's not like this is a very busy board in general, if I posted to an emulator thread (which, by the way, I couldn't even find on here), it would likely be unseen for a few days.

TL;DR, other guy was right about my intentions, and you're getting way too worked up over a thread on a rather sleepy board.

Because you can get one for literally 10 dollars. It supports most Bluetooth/USB controllers. And outputs 240p. It runs most emulators fullspeed up to neogeo/cps3 and plays GameCube, wii and some n64 games. It's just a good all around cheap option that takes minutes to setup.

An original Xbox is huge, noisy, and dosent play GameCube games. Also has a shitty controller which is wired. The hardware is older and less reliable and the Wii is easier to find. Softmodding Wii is easy enough for anyone to do it and it's small enough to fit in nicely on any shelf.

>> No.3186760

Raspberry Pis are alright for non-timing intensive games, but input delay keeps them from being optimal. this is input delay from the RPi, not from the HDMI signal.

it works, yeah, but you will be able to notice the lag

I'd buy a little $200 computer and use that instead if you were so inclined. use your rpi as an htpc

I do have a Pi. and I've tried emulating with it. it works and runs well (60FPS almost steady on SNES and PS1), but the input delay is extremely noticable. Games like SMBs, Castlevanias, Ninja Gaidens, SM kart, etc etc are noticably sluggish in comparison to PC emulation/real hardware

it's not a meme. I tucking love RaspPis and have 3 of them throughout my house, but they're not primo emulation stations at this moment in time (at least not Pi2)
