GC controller (as well as Xbox, PS and pretty much any other modern controller) has too much dead zone on the sticks, the N64 stick is much more precise, and I guess you're mentioning your index finger because of the Gamecube's L/R buttons, yeah it's much better to tap L/R on the N64 for this game as well.

I never really liked the N64. Maybe it's an Euro thing but in my country that era was more defined by the PSX.
I am not saying it's a bad console or anything, I just didn't grow up with it. Games were expensive as fuck too, which had a lot to do with why I never saw it as a viable choice back in the day. Emulation being meh doesn't really help getting a taste for it, and blindly spending money on a console I am not entirely sure about seems wasteful.

I wonder, however, why the difference among countries. The US would totally die for the 64, whereas in my country only kids that had Nintendo as a religion would get one. Despite the PSX having better games in the US than in EU territory, to boot. I think EU got most of the 64 games released around, while we got shafted in the PSX department, specially in terms of RPGs.

Usually the analogy goes that pizza is pretty good even when it's bad... not that this applies to the N64 too much.

I was an early N64 adopter way back when and it's my most neglected retro console by far. I have no desire to revisit the dozen or so "great" 1st/2nd party games, idgaf about console FPSes or early 3D racers, I'm not going to hunt down the couple of allegedly good japanese exclusives or drop money on a flashcart to play them. I don't own any games for it that have superior ports on other consoles (megaman, tony hawk etc). I'm also missing a few notables like the Pokemon and Goemon games. >because it has Atari Jaguar level of enginnering

I want this meme to end because it's the opposite of the truth. The N64 has extremely streamlined engineering with only three major chips (including RAM) and only one custom chip - the GPU.

And the GPU was well engineered and doesn't suffer from any major bugs like the Jaguar does.

The reason it's hard to emulate is because the GPU uses a non-standard implementation of proto-OpenGL (a console form of IRIS GL) and emulator authors are lazy and they just want to pass N64 3D calls to modern GPU OpenGL calls. Of course that doesn't work well because the N64's GPU did different things in response to some of those calls.

Also the fact that the GPU supports custom microcodes for additional vertex / sound functionality makes emulation more complicated, but it's not exactly all that different from how vertex shaders work these days (except microcodes work on a much lower level).

I personally feel the N64 was in that awkward transition from 2D to 3D before it had been perfected, thus a lot of those old games that used to be really good 15 years ago have aged poorly (exceptions being the Zeldas, F-Zero X, Doom 64, a few others).

The [notretro]Gamecube[/notretro] did everything the N64 did but way better, it even had OoT and MJ as part of that collector's edition Zelda thing. A lot of PS1 games have at least aged fairly well in comparison (especially the 2D games).
