Hey /vr/ I purchased Mischief Makers on N64 today. While testing it, I saw the game has a gorgeous sprite based style just from the intro, and it's a perfect example of why we needed more 2D games in the 5th generation of consoles. I feel like gen 5 is the perfect sweet spot for 2D games - consoles like the saturn and n64 were capable of 3D, but when they stayed in 2D, the result was for some gorgeous games; unfortunately developers solemn left in the safe zone that was 2D games. Symphony of the Night, Yoshi's Story, & Guardian Heroes are some notable examples. Post some 2D games from the 5th generation worth playing.

>> No.3177703

There's tons of great looking 2D games on Saturn and PSX. The N64 is really the only console that had a vast majority of 3D games.

I don't have much to add but thanks OP. I agree completely. Mischief Makers and Guardian Heroes are two of my favorite games of all time. Treasure really made the best games.

I was this close to putting in a "I'm not knocking 3D games" statement. But I figured the board was mature enough not to assume because I like one thing I hate another. Guess I was wrong.

These emulation screenshots always bother me because there's these outlines in the background graphics that aren't actually there when you play on real hardware.

I never liked Mischief Makers' graphics. Everything looks poorly rendered with bad colors and lots of pixellation.

Different art styles, friend.

MM has pretty good sprite animations, but yeah most of the scenery is made with blocks (which are also animated). It's simple but not ugly IMO.
And has some pretty backgrounds.

Lomax is cool, but nothing extraordinary in terms of gameplay. I also liked how Flink looks on Megadrive, really pretty games, but just OK in design.

>> No.3178675

the best thing about Mischief Makers were the physics and movement tech. it was an extremely good platformer. i thought it looked okay, but its graphics weren't its strong point.

>>3178653
I always thought MM was ugly before I actually played it. It's definitely way better in motion, everything is so well animated and lot's of things going on in the scenery. But either way it's definitely not a beautiful game, it just isn't as ugly as it looks on the first glance.

And considering how beautiful Treasure games usually are it's pretty weird how MM ended up looking.

I think rather than ugly it looks weird. Especially all these haniwa faces that blocks and balls have. And the game has a lot of blocks and balls. But yeah I agree it looks a lot better in motion.
