People just don't judge it properly because it doesn't have spindash and they get their ass handed to them by Labyrinth Zone, but it is the best Sonic game.

It wasn't the first game. I know this might develop into cosnole war/brand war faggotry but Super Mario Bros. implemented momentum (you can run and that affects the length and height of your jumps), Yuji Naka himself said that SMB was an inspiration for him.
I think what Sonic bring to the table was the spinning mechanic.

There's also probably many other games that did momentum before Sonic.
But still, yeah, Sonic had great gameplay, characters and art direction.
I actually like Sonic 1 (and by extension 2 and CD)'s art direction better than 3 and Knuckles. With 3 they went for a more semi-realistic feel, the first Sonic games were more psychedelic and dreamy, especially 1 and CD, but I like 1 the most in that regard.

It has spindash (although it takes a fraction of a second to "load", so you can't release instantly), and the Super Peel Out, which allows Sanic to go faster and release almost instantly, but you're open to enemy attacks since you're not in spin form.

Yeah sonic CD is basically a more "improved" version of Sonic 1 utilizing more mechanics from the 1st game rather than 2 and the power of the CD technology. I'm stuck on this or 3K as my favorite Sonic game.

Same here, I love Marble Zone.
I think the level design is cool, I love these floating platforms over lava that get on fire once you step on them.
And people complain about "waiting" but that's always been part of Sonic games. Sonic 3&K probably has the most waiting in levels like Marble Garden, Flying Battery, etc. I don't see what's the big deal with the "waiting" on Marble Zone.

The only places I wait on Marble Zone is in those falling spiked things you need to step on to go up, and the green blocks that come out of the walls at the end of act 2 or 3, I think.
But yeah otherwise there's not too much waiting on that zone, maybe when you have to ride a block through the lava, but you can still jump over platforms and get past without waiting. And one of these sections has a invincibility powerup so you can just run straight through the lava.

Marble is linear and the 3 stages for each zone reduces replay value. Look how Sonic 2 is much less linear, offers more zones with less acts, improving variety and replay value at the same time.

Linear but tightly designed and has shortcuts and some alternate paths too. It's not totally linear.

So many people have trouble with Labyrinth and I just don't get it. There are more than enough air bubbles dotted around, as long as you stay at every one air shouldn't be a problem.
