How about a game I couldn't beat as a kid, and can't beat as an adult either.

Could never beat the final boss. Finally did recently.

Also the NES TMNT game. Shredder was absolutely pathetic compared to the hell of getting to him.

This game scared the shit out of me when i was a kid, the feeling of being overpowered by Jason and the whole ambient is really eerie too, but also the game was hard as fuck back then.
Now is one of my favorite games on the nes, and beating it for the first time was amazing.

Sigma was really tough on a single life bar but once you collect the energy tanks he is pretty easy.

Remember the screen shot of this mini game on the back of the box, the one with Toad driving eluding to him being a playable character? I played this game to death trying to see if he was an unlockable character. Turns out nope.

>> No.3172267

Still can't beat the Mario trilogy. SMB2 I just suck at, SMB3 I have beaten every level in the game as a kid but not in a single playthrough like how the developers want, and SMB1 I am as good as the next guy who has played as long as I have but for some reason when 8-3 hits my skills fall to shit like some curse even when I am careful because I am at the point where I could sweep by everything else in the game prior. I got to 8-4 once and admittedly it is way easier than 8-3 but that hammer brother at the end is too tough.

Wonderboy in Monster Land. Never got past level 5 as a kid.

This as well. Got to level 4 ONCE as a kid. Came back as an adult and stomped it. Level 5 and 6 are non-stop BS. Scrolls4lyfe.

This game right here. Back when me and my best friend just could not progress past certain parts of the game and after a few loses to the other main characters we just gave up, even with Game Shark cheats we just could not get past either the Castle with the rival fight or the star globe where another rival got there before you and as a kid I never even knew about the going back in time part.

flash forward 10 or so years ago I found a retro game shop with this for sale for 15 dollars and decided now that the internet was a thing to try again.

Main character leveled oddly(weaker) due to a decimal point during translation, overleveling can make rival fights impossible, fights are predetermined on start (cant savescum pre or mid fight, just keep bull horning it until RNG blesses you), and sometimes if recruited later enough your companion will be miles ahead of you in strength.

It was a heart warming feeling taking down the last boss with Kamil and Esuna with no gameshark, like a demon being banished from your soul. Esuna always beat the rival fight for me because of Bottle of Agility and her natural agility and it was always a shitfest of dodging before someone died

Also fuck everything is Valsu got the runes, pretty much a game over if you were over level 32 at any time because hurr durr elixir restored full MP as well as HP

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers the movie: The Game and Marvel: War of the Gems.

Both of them had bullshit faster enemies and random jumping with limited health replishments. Especially, War of the gems.

But when you give spider-man, the fastest character the strength gym so he hits as hard as the hulk with the fastest speed, you can stun-lock enemies and bosses into defeat. EVEN with my bullshit tactic, I barely beat Thanos at the end.

Power rangers just had that bullshit where it had to be hard for rentals.

Got this as a kid because I loved ninja turtles, but the dojo stage would always fuck me up. Finally sat down a few years ago and got through it, and by some miracle beat Shredder and his 1 hit instant death attacks.

It's a weird feeling to finally succeed in something 20+ years later.

How about the inverse?
I could almost beat Contra with my eyes closed as a tyke, without using the Konami code.
Nowadays, I can't seem to be able to get back into form.
Surprising, considering that I've got games like Robocop verus The Terminator (Mega Drive version) down to muscle memory after all these years.

>> No.3179683

I have the inverse of this for some reason
Plenty of incredibly hard games I beat as a kid that I just can't beat for some reason now

I reached this area multiple times but couldn't figure out how to hit Robotnik. Then my Genesis broke when I was 10 or so. Fast forward to college and I beat it on the Gamecube Mega Collection.

I think people's gameplay style shifts over the years. I'm >>3173081, and while I can beat some stuff now that I couldn't as a kid, there's stuff I could beat as a kid easily that I can't seem to do as easily anymore. I used to have Ducktales down to muscle memory, now I struggle to get through. Same with Super Mario USA. I could play through and beat Twisted Metal 2 with every character as a kid, now I can barely make it through with Axel, Thumper, and Minion.

As much as many hate to hear it: Physical fitness is a very significant factor for fast paced games.

You can get away with being out of shape when you're younger than say, 25, and not have any problems with your reflexes. But once you're pushing 30 and beyond if you're not staying fit it all goes to shit.
