I've been having trouble finding a stable copy of the Hydlide Windows remake from T&E Soft that was released in 1999. A link to the game was on Tokugawa forums but was hosted on megaupload, which no longer exists. Requests on their forums to reupload the game are unanswered.

The only other place to look is here:
http://files.derrick.sobodash.com/translations/hydlide

However, when I follow those steps, I can create the .exe, but it mysteriously self-deletes seconds after installing the game, and I can't find a way to get the game to be stable.

If anyone knows how to use the link above, or has a copy, I'd appreciate it. In return, I'll be posting some soundtrack rips from old RPGs plus rips from my personal collection that I went through the autistic trouble of track-listing and organizing into something neat and clean.

First up: Hydlide 3: The Space Memories soundtrack for the X68000

Thanks so much for the rip. The game has some great tracks and I ended up looping longplays to listen to some of them.

No problem. Hydlide 3 has a great soundtrack.

This one was just taken from KHinsider, but it's a neat and rare OST from the 80s PC version with some nice arrange tracks:

Bump; still waiting for my anon in shitpost armor.

Here is Efera & Jiliora's soundtrack, an obscure ARPG for the PCE. Excellent stuff!

Bumping a cool thread.

I've tried super hydlide before when rom browsing, but it seems a bit unorthodox. Do you have any advice on how to start with the games? The main thing I've heard is that is works off of bumping into things or avoiding getting bumped into.

I don't know if the version of this Project EGG sells is bound to DRM or not, but that's always an option assuming the translation patch is compatible.

Unlike in Ys, Hydlide games give you defense and attack modes you can toggle between to control bump behavior (no damage to enemies but less damage taken vs. damage to enemies but now vulnerable). Hydlide 3/Super Hydlide introduces weight limits (gold and inventory can potentially outweigh and hurt your character), day/night cycles with sleep factored in, and some other stat-heavy systems to complicate things. General rule is to experiment with leveling certain parts of your character early on before specializing and making a specific build work for the later parts of the game.

Good taste in music, OP. I prefer the X68k soundtrack for Xak, but the the PC-88 Hydlide 3 OST remains my favorite. Amazing how the series just suddenly had great tunes right before it ended.

I didn't know EGG offered it up, though I am unfamiliar with the site as a whole. Thanks for pointing that out, though obviously I am not super-thrilled at the prospect of spending money! I don't think T&E Soft even exists anymore; I remember reading its lead designer ended up at M2 or something.

I agree that the PCE ost of Xak isn't the best version (for me that'd be the MSX2), but hey, that's the version I played. It was a decent game, but wildly unbalanced (I hear the PC versions were better in this regard).

Hydlide 3's music is great, yeah. It's impressive how the series went from 20s jingles to some really cool funky jams. Maybe they wanted to (sort of) end the series on a high note.

This next one isn't an RPG, but it's the very good PCE soundtrack to Valis II - probably the second-best soundtrack in the entire series (the first being the PC soundtrack to Valis II).

There weren't any track names I could find anywhere, so I had to crib some names from the PC soundtrack, as well as geekily pick things I thought fit.

Super Hydlide has an attack button so it plays a little bit more like Zelda as opposed to the earlier games.

The biggest things to take into consideration are:

1) the weight system, shown as WC (weight carried) vs. LC (load capacity), I believe. Something like that. Essentially, you have to make sure you are not carrying over your LC, or else your speed suffers.

2) The need to eat and sleep, which are the two largest motivating factors in the game; if it is getting late (around 23:00 on the clock) you had best be hauling your ass back to town to get to an inn, at least until you get a sleeping bag or something.

3) weird morality system, where there are "good" monsters (that don't attack you), and "evil" monsters (that do). Killing good monsters makes townsfolk raise prices and less likely to talk to you, and the only way to restore morality is by killing.. more bad monsters. What monsters are good and bad depends on the area.

Beyond that, the game is also cryptic with how to progress. I think some of this is tied to your morality and your INT stats (e.g., you can't enter the underground city, in the graveyard, unless your INT is high enough; this is the first major task you need to complete in the game!). But in general the game requires a lot of experimentation and stumbling onto things.

New soundtrack: PCE-CD remake of Fray in Magical Adventure. Download if only for the great arrangement of Burning Skies from Xak 1!

Hydlide's creator and programmer, Tokihiro Naito, currently programs at M2. There's an excellent interview with him in Untold History of Japanese Game Developers Vol. 2 which you can search for.

>>3172246
Indeed. There's even an SC-55 soundtrack for Xak III I've played via Sound Canvas VA, good stuff for the time. Xak II's music is hit-or-miss with me, but the FM Towns arrangements do interesting things. Ultimately I think Tadahiro Nitta did Micro Cabin's best soundtrack work, more than Sasai (who improved at Squaresoft) and Urita (Xak III).

Oh my gosh that's adorable.

I love paper dolls, they need to make a comeback.

Hey, if you're still looking for a way to install this on Win7+ based PCs I found a way to do so.

Basically you need to use the translation pack that OP provides as a link. You need to patch the installer with the Crack. After doing that when you get to the character entry step make sure you fill it out completely, then hit the left button.

this should bring up a new screen which asks where you want to install the game.

Just click the left button again which should install the game in the standard C drive. If that didn't work try the right button.

Your game should be installed. After that apply the patch.

I changed my region to Japanese to handle Unicode - you might have to do the same but I don't think you need to.
