1986
After the success of Super Mario Bros and The Legend of Zelda, Nintendo was needing a more action-focused game to round out their library of NES masterpieces.
The result of their efforts was a game called Metroid. Metroid revolutioned the gaming scene by giving players a free-roaming world blocked off by hidden power-ups that also aided in the simple but satisfying combat.
It was hailed as one of the great NES games.

1994
After the Gameboy title Metroid 2: Return of Samus, a well-received experiment on Nintendo's miraculous handheld device, Nintendo's R&D1 spent 6 months developing the third game in the series, this time for the 16-bit Super Nintendo Entertainment System.
Super Metroid would come to be recognized as one of, if not the best video game ever made, in account of its polished graphics, smooth and satisfying gameplay, brain-teasing puzzles and excellent soundtrack.

1990
Four years before Super Metroid a new franchise had been spawned into the SNES.
In order to showcase and perfect the sprite-twisting technique of the MODE 7, Miyamoto envisioned a new kind of racing game, one where the vehicles would be floating, forcing the player to contend with the anti-gravity mechanics they were not used to.

The game came to be known as F-Zero, and was also a must-have title for the blooming SNES at the time.

1998
While Metroid slept during the N64's life due to Nintendo being unsure of how to translate its hallway-drudging gameplay into the third dimension, F-Zero flourished as yet another finely polished title hit the 64-bit machine.
A fully polygonal racing title, F-Zero X surprised players with its fast gameplay, amazing music and 4-player competitive multiplayer modes. Coupled with a wide selection of tracks and an enjoyable Death Race mode, F-Zero was well on its way to become a great franchise.

2001-2003
The Gameboy advance, released in 2001, quickly became a safe haven for quality games of all genres. The little 32-bit handheld was home to two Metroid games, Metroid Fusion and, a while later, Metroid Zero Mission, both hailed as true revivals of the series (Fusion less so).

F-Zero also had its spot in the sun with both F-Zero Maximum Velocity, a re-imagining the of the original SNES title and an Anime tie-in game, F-Zero GP Legend. Both titles were recognized as quality games in their own right, some even say surpassing the quality of the originals.

2002-2005
A Texas-based developer, Retro Studios, was tasked with bringing the Metroid Franchise into the Nintendo Gamecube, as love for the series began to flourish once more with the release of Fusion. After some comments and complaints from Shigeru Miyamoto, Retro Studios came out to the world with a brand new perspective on the series. A First-Person-Adventure game where the player took on the role of Samus Aran, series' protagonist through her own eyes.

Even though the sudden shift in perspective was jarring, the game was quickly adopted into the series by die-hard fans and the Prime series stuck thanks to its amazing atmosphere, immersive world building and challenging puzzles.

2005 saw the release of Prime's sequel, Prime 2 Echoes, where, despite debate about the game's quality, it is still highly regarded by fans and treasured by collectors.

2004
Following the trend of passing off big franchises onto other developers, Nintendo requested the help of long since past rivals SEGA for the development of F-Zero GX.

Sega pitched in and came out with one of the finest, most critically acclaimed racing games in the Nintendo Gamecube.

F-Zero GX captivated fans and nonbelievers alike with its jaw dropping graphics, enticing soundtrack, blistering fast speedy gameplay and pin-perfect controls.
To this day it is hailed as the definitive F-Zero experience, and, excluding its Arcade-only sister game, F-Zero AX, it is the last time video game fans would enjoy an F-Zero game.

2007-2010
With the release of the Nintendo Wii, Metroid Prime 3 was released, the last in the Prime Trilogy excluding Hunters and Pinball, both exclusive for the Nintendo DS.
The game's motion controls divided the fanbase into apologists and negativists, but the game itself was well-received and enjoyed high review scores.
In 2009 Nintendo announced that Team Ninja would be handling the series this time around, and in 2010 Metroid Other M would be released worldwide. A team without supervision from Nintendo and complete freedom gave birth to a game that wasn't too well received by players or critics. The bitter taste in everyone's mouths wouldn't wash easily.

Present Day
12 years after GX's release and 6 years after Other M's release, Nintendo's last acknowledgement of F-Zero boiled down to a small wind-up toy minigame in the Wii U's party game collection "Nintendoland" together with a small, 4-player competitive, Metroid-inspired shooter.
Lately the series have been given one last spark of life with the inclusion of both Big Blue and Mute City tracks in Mario Kart 8, and the announcement of the Samus-free Metroid Federation Force for the Nintendo 3DS.

The words "F-Zero" and "Metroid" have not been uttered by Nintendo since.

The skies have lost two of their brightest stars.

I prefer X. I don't like how in GX, when you jump into the air, it feels like a different physics engine takes over and you just fall out of the sky in a way that feels completely incongruent.
