What is your preferred Sega Genesis model?

My opinion is that you can't go wrong with a Model 1, however I prefer the Model 2 because it looks sexier, it doesn't look ugly with the Model 2 Sega CD (not to mention a working model 1 Sega CD is hard to come by), and you don't need to plug a stereo cable into the front. Downside is that some models have ugly composite output, but if you're using RGB then that doesn't really matter.

The Model 3 isn't really worth bothering with unless you are going to mod it for at least stereo output, and preferably RGB output and a power LED. Everything about it is pretty stripped down compared to the prior two versions. Modding it for the 32X and Sega CD is possible but ultimately pointless, because hooking them together looks ugly as sin (you might as well just get a CDX). The only real reasons I'd ever really recommend it, is if you think it looks cute, or if you have a SNES Jr. and you want the Sega equivalent to match.

>it doesn't look ugly with the Model 2 Sega CD

Are you implying the Model 1 does'

>Downside is that some models have ugly composite output

No, downside is that some models have abysmal audio clarity, around the late model 1s and early model 2s.

Genesis 3 is actually really good on this front, but the earlier Model 1 will always be the right choice, because of the ladder effect and proper mixing.

Nomad.

I'm not kidding. It has the best video out of all the systems I've tested (using RGB of course), and the audio is better than the Model 2.

While I do think Model 2 looks a lot more modern, the original Model 1 looks more like a gaming machine, if that makes sense. Model 2 looks kind of like a flat black piece of plastic with nothing in it.

Model 3 outputs RGB.

The myth that started the Model 3 not outputting RGB was debunked.

Or you can get a 3/4 board Model 2, like mine. Most collectors agree they are up to par with the early Model 1 in terms of audio and video. Problem is that they're hard to find, but I was able to find one by asking various sellers on eBay to check the underside of the system and tell me wether or not there was a roughly 1" gap next to the metal plate. A lot of people getting rid of Model 2 genesis units don't know that the 3/4 board model is more valuable.

In terms of video I couldn't say, but the audio is definitely different from the Model 1s.

Only the first revision had crystal clear audio which not even model 2s can match, while the later were heavily filtered so they sound a little muffled and model 2s might have the upper hand but the one thing they don't reproduce is the echo effect from the majority of model 1s, which sounds so good to me, and you can tell several devs toyed with it.
Also, I mentioned the volume mixing, which is a bit lacking in the revisions.

I always thought my 3/4 Model 2 sounded good-- I certainly never noticed anything "off" about it, like in this video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WuIjwgPIQtg

(albeit that's a very extreme example)

Even so, the stereo bypass amp mod does sound pretty nice and I might install it eventually. Next thing I do for the system though will be to replace the little tac switch under the reset button, because that's been broke pretty much forever (same goes for the one on my N64).

Also, I might widen the hole over the Video Out port a teensy bit, because my RGB Scart cable doesn't quite fit and it tends to pop out whenever I nudge the system., but

That video is bullshit. Even though the guy makes it clear in the comments, I can't help but think he did it for spectacularity reasons, I mean it's not EVEN an amp or mixing problem, the sound chip itself is FUCKED hard because it's outputting notes at double the frequency, probably because of bad internal clocking. It's an issue enclosed to that production line of CDXs or maybe even his own unit.

>I always thought my 3/4 Model 2 sounded good

It does, it's as good as it can get using original components and without "distortions", which is what I like about the model 1 if you listened to the videos I posted.

So I've heard, although you'd need pretty keen ears to tell the difference. If your childhood genesis was a High Definition Graphics one that's probably always going to be the version you want to hear, whereas if you just had a later version that had "good" audio then you probably won't have much of a preference.

Yeah the older Model 2 definitely sounds a lot less punchy, and when it gets to the part with the really trebelly bits it sounds a lot worse.

I think the VA3 Model 2 compares very favorably to the Model 1. I honestly can't tell a difference.

>>3158161
>I honestly can't tell a difference.

It's hard to put into words, let's just say the Model 1 has a richer, beefier sound with a lot more unintended chorus that makes the FM music really shine. While the good Model 2 is how the chip was meant to sound, but with no extra bells and whistles.

It's REALLY obvious in the Sonic 1 video, just listening at the beginning of Green Hill, the model 1 has so much distortion it sounds like it has its own reverb buffer or something. While the Model 2 makes clear cuts with nothing in between.

Maybe it's because I had a SNES first, but I always felt more drawn to the Model 2's design than the Model 1. Which makes sense I suppose, because the Model 2 was made to have a similar form factor to the SNES. I guess it comes down to if you prefer an 80s looking console or a 90s looking console.

I would have thought it's the other way around. The model 1 looks fine by its own but the add-ons were all designed for the Model 2, and aesthetically don't look quite so nice with the model 1. Also, a Model 1 with a Model 2 Sega CD is twice as wide as a standalone Model 2 genesis, so if you're interested in the Sega CD the model 1 is going to take up a few more inches of real estate. With just the regular Model 1 and no expansions the difference isn't that noticeable, although the Model 1 with a Sega CD has a truly massive footprint. If that look tickles your fancy though, more power to you.

Nope. The Model 1 CD was definitely designed with the Model 1 Genesis in mind.

Plus, the Power Base Converter doesn't even work with the Model 2 Genesis.

The 32x kind of looks better on the Model 2, but it actually fits better on the Model 1.

The Model 1 Sega CD is a lot rarer. If you can find one it's a great collector's piece to own, although most people will probably end up with the Model 2 since it's much cheaper, easier to find and more reliable.

There was also a Power Base made for the model 2 but it was never released in the US, and even in countries like the UK where the Master System was big it's not very common, since the Master System was old news by the time the Model 2 genesis was phasing out the model 1.

Stone Age Gamer sells a third-party power base that is compatible with all versions of the Genesis / MD, but unfortunately it only supports the catridges and has no slot for card games. I am not even sure if the official Model 2 Power Base had a card slot on it.

>Model 2 audio is never the same as the first Model 1's.

Actually the earlier Model 2s can potentially sound better than any other model.

Despite their absolutely awful sound mixing circuitry which totally shits on the sound, early Model 2s have the best audio DACs of any Sega Genesis. It's a tragic irony.

If you do one of those sound mixing replacement mods on an early Model 2, it's actually the best sounding model out of everything.

These days I am all about using my X'Eye. Before I owned it I liked using the Model 1 because it has a noticeably better sound chip, the headphone jack and overall looks better than the Model 2. Growing up I had the Model 2.
