The super smooth movement. It's one of the reasons I like vanilla-ish settings. No recoil or other fancy weapon effects, no mouselook, just super stable and smooth blasting while on turbo rollerskates.

>challenging yet accessible for everyone thanks to the difficulty settings well integrated with the game design
>tight controls and speed
>good levels, quite a few rewards and nasty surprises to find
>story is simple enough that it doesn't take any time away from the game, but still motivating enough for the player
>environments and creatures that, while completely unrealistic by today's standards, still maintain their coherence and therefore look good
>great music
>violent as befits its theme, but no edgemastery or claims to coolness is to be found
>bredy gud multiplayer

Everything from map, to music, to HUD, to custom weapons, to custom fucking everything, is packaged into a "wad", which is a godsend to distribute and share over the internet. It also feels like a really tightly crafted piece of work.

Fuck Half-Life for making assets all separate making it a nightmare to deal with. As a creator, you have to instruct people on how to install your content and its required content (skyboxes, sounds, textures), making it an even bigger nightmare to uninstall them. It's also messy to download on the fly when you connect to a server running custom stuff. It wasn't until the 2013 Steampipe update where Goldsource engine implemented a scratch box temp directory for downloaded content.

I also like the engine for being so primitive, it can be ported to toasters like printers. I played a port on my DS lite back then and for the first time I actually appreciated the fact this is a first person shooter that didn't require vertical aiming.

God bless Doom.

>> No.3159827

If we're talking the original games (otherwise the modding would be the clear answer) I'd say the balance. All the weapons are balanced against each other and with the monsters who are also very well balanced with each other and the levels they're in.

The aesthetics, sound, atmosphere and feel.

Is there any other game that features the same sort of visuals and feel as Doom does?

Also the gameplay and level design is gold, let me tell you, I'm spoiled rotten by modern ports and flashy mods, but the core game is still as fun to this day, just keyboard + mouse turning, or a gamepad, the original episodes never lose their edge.

>> No.3160951

Enemy AI is excellent. You can build many different type of architecture and enemies will always react well.

Try doing some of that in Duke3D and enemies will fuck around, not attack the player like you want, etc

Doom's enemies are also able to track and find the player exceptionally well. They just seem to be able to read their environments perfectly.

The story.
I'm not kidding. I remember being floored as a kid that the player was on Mars' moons fighting interdemensional monsters.

Why did ZeniMax take a pretty much perfect game like DOOM and make it modern shooter simulator 2016?

>> No.3166151

>>3165865
>why is this modern game published by an industry giant like a modern game?
Did you really think they were gonna make it like the original games? Doom 3 wasn't like them either and nobody should have expected it to be.

Be glad that the initial Cowwadoodie build was scrapped, it could have been a million times worse.

To me, it looks like the singleplayer could be better than Doom 3, and that's as high hopes and expectations I'll have for neo-iD, that "it could be alright", but I'll be honest and say that there's still room for them to fuck it up, let's see what happens (don't buy it on launch or pre-order it).

>Bethesda being anywhere near a beloved classic like DOOM worries me a shit ton
Yeah, I can see why. But remember, they're NOT the devs, many people are mistakenly believing this. On the flip side, they now have the same publisher, which is a different reason to worry altogether.

>considering it's okay when Bethesda does it
Really? Basically everyone I know shits on Bethesda for being sloppy with programming and bug fixing. Morrowind was only made flawlessly bug-free about 10 years after it's release, and that was a community effort.
I mean, I admire how they can smack together a decent sandbox with regular consistency (some better than others), but they sure do leave a lot of things to be desired in some departments.

>I'd rather have Doomius Sam than ZeniMax jewery.
I was never really a fan of gameplay where you fight hordes upon hordes of enemies as a regular feature of the map design, so that goes either way for me.

Quake 1 had a bit too little enemies, Serious Sam and Plutonia has too many to be fun for me, games like Doom and Half-Life occupy a more pleasant sweet spot for me.

I'm not 100% pleased with all the directions of Doom 4, but I think it's possible that it turns out as -OK- single player game, I hope that it's -at least- as good as Doom 3 or better (I always thought it was ok), but I think that it can also turn out worse than Doom for the 3DO. They seem to be listening to the community somewhat, so that shows some manner of good faith.
For instance, they actually did remove the piss yellow filter and make the monsters more colorful in response to criticism, and I'm glad for that, partially it's just a nice design decision, but it's better for gameplay reasons. One of the really great things about classic Doom is that every single monster is very readily identifiable from their distinct shape and color, even at long distances

I need a good weapons mod for Colorful Hell. Something not OP like RO but along the lines of BD weapons load out. Trailblazer is a bit too OP

Ideas?

Doom is still so much fun because it's so chaotic. The enemies are mainly against you, but friendly fire between them causes them to go apeshit and attack each other. It's really fun to have so much chaos going on.

This is a very good point friendo, the infighting is an aspect of gameplay that you don't see copied in other games, you'd think it's just a small thing, but it's actually very important.

Seems like something Notch would add though, I recall he had an extremely high opinion of Doom, that's probably where it's from.

Recently I have been playing Chocolate Doom on my netbook and honestly it's surprisingly fun for a 23-year old game.

The gritty sound of cocking the super shotgun. The sound of revenants bones crumbling. That feel of taking down 5 enemies at once with the super shotgun. Open level design filled with with traps and secrets.

Absolutely phenomenal.
