Which was the first rpg that inserted chest trap enemies? Sure, Dragon Quest popularized it but I am pretty sure that kind of enemies already existed in older western rpg.

Dungeons and Dragons. They also weren't limited to chest mimics. There were wall mimics, floor mimics, ceiling mimics, door mimics, pillow mimics, bedding mimics with variants like killer linen and the flannel beast, backpack mimics, a whole room mimic, a beholder mimic that is actually an exploding gas monster that kills you with poison spores if you hit it...

I can't confirm pre-2nd edition AD&D, but in fact normal mimics are neutral in alignment and have human intelligence. Killer mimics are the ones that just eat everything that touches them.

I wouldn't get the reference either if I didn't played Dragon Quest.

Post best retro mimics

You started out correct and then veered way off into Nonsenseville. Original Mimics, 1st and 2nd Edition are able to imitate structures made of wood and stone.

You could conceivably have Mimics placed into a recess in a wall or a floor, but they aren't capable of going two-dimensional, nor can they put a gaping huge hole in themselves to imitate a door jamb. It should also follow that seeing as they can only imitate wood and stone that bedding and linens and backpacks and everything else was utter quackery.

Your DM must have been extremely creatively-minded towards rules, or just batshit insane.

I never realised until now that the Luggage is technically a mimic, even though it is not at all trying to disguise itself as a normal chest.
Pic related. It's the Luggage.

I first heard about Mimics 25 years ago in the Monster Manual. Neverwinter Nights had a pretty serious four-way war between the PC, a mimic, a demon trying to get back his missing hand, and greedy rats.

What's Dragon Quest?

Mimics, while cheesy, have always been kinda fun. Especially when just taken to the extreme (A dungeon mimic, where the whole dungeon is actually a mimic).

This is probably my favorite mimic though.
