I've never played a Final Fantasy game.

Where should I start?

With one on your favorite console

FF2 for SNES.

Six is honestly the only one worth playing out of the first six. I'd recommend 6-9 sequentially.

I remember trying to play FF7 as a kid and hating it, started FF1 a few days ago on the FF1/2 PS1 combo disc, and I really like it.

I like how it's just classic, autistic fantasy with mages and warriors and not some 14 year old elf-kin genderfluid anime guy with blue hair and a magical parrot sidekick or whatever. The gameplay is pretty simple but engrossing.

>> No.3153680

>>3153672
FF1 is actually an excellent game but basically everyone who started with FF6 or 7 and think that they're what the series should be like will miss the point of the game.

>> No.3153686

>>3153672
You should try FF7 again now that you're more mature enough. Also isn't FF2 one of the most hated games in the series?

>> No.3153702

>>3153686

FF2 seems to be the least popular in the main series, but it tried some interesting things. The idea behind having your character's stats grow depending on what you used was great in theory, but it became easily exploitable by being able to beat the shit out of your own party for extra HP, attack and whatever other skills you used. If they had a few fail safes for that, it would have been better in my opinion. Still not a bad game by any means.

You're really exaggerating the tropes you're referring to, nothing like that is ever that incoherent. Did the game actually bother you that badly?

No final fantasy game is hard but 5 definitely isn't the easiest. At the very least it's the hardest SNES era one.

I only played 13, is it really considered more challenging compared to others? I died various times throughout my playthough

Yes. It's a must-have for any FF fan and easy to get into. Has a very nice music selection too. I pirated the DLC.

>> No.3155298

>>3155227
Yup. People shit all over Final Fantasy by saying it's "mash x to win" and then they make a game specifically to address those concerns and they shit all over it because it isn't FF7.

>switching paradigms was intense as hell

Yes, yes it was. I honestly believe some of the most vocal detractors of 13 never actually got to any of those super intense fights and gave up in the first two chapters.

>> No.3155307

>>3153640
Well I don't know why you'd start at 2 or 8 but they're still good games. Also 13 is anything but hard lmao. I don't recall any parts that were difficult and bought it on release. I even ran a sub group on square Enix's old forum for helping people through the game. Idk why people had any trouble with it, nothing was unintuitive.

Guilty, I heard it got better but the first whatever of the game is just so fucking dull I couldn't keep going.

What chapter does it pick up? Might give it a second chance.

Start with Tactics. Best story in the series, solid system, relatively easy (may take you by surprise the first time you play but other than that it's as hard as you make it).

I have the 1/2 for my GBA and I play with the maps of dungeons and caves printed out next to me. What's amazing is that it's more engaging than anything I have for the 3ds or have played at all recently

>What chapter does it pick up?

Combat really opens up in 3. Once you fight your first summon you're golden. You get multi-member parties and you start needing to switch paradigms to win fights fairly soon, and eventually the endgame is customizing your own party paradigms and quarterbacking the shit out of your party, it's super satisfying, like an ARPG/RTS hybrid.

I'll be the first to admit I needed two tries to actually get going on it, though but I had all my free time suddenly vanish down into an abyss and when I started again I no idea what the fuck was happening.

I recommend FF4 and 6 for gba, easy to emulate and are much better than later editions. I'd avoid anything FF releated on steam, Square has given zero fucks about those ports and fucked them over quite terribly. The only reason to even bother is for the FF4:After Years pc port unless you want to bother emulating a psp. Anything before 4 I'd avoid, and 5 in my opinion tries to combine the party flexibility of 1-3 with the story telling of 4 and just fails overall

FF Crystal Chronicles was a favorite of mine, I'd totally recommend it but I don't know how much of a bitch it'd be to emulate it. this one is pretty different from any other FF game, it was a real gem on the consoles that had a very odd control method as you didn't use a normal GC controller but a GBA plugged in.

FF tactics is alright, I couldn't get in to it that much but I can certainly see the appeal to it.

FF Rebirth is pretty good if you liked WoW but you want it in a FF setting.

>> No.3156412

If you get the roms for FF4 and 6 on GBA, get the patches to restore the SNES music and color palette as well. Also I think there were a couple of bizarrely arbitrary translation changes that were restored in a patch.

I was about to make a thread about this lol, thanks op.

Yesterday I downloaded FF1 for PSP and started playing with emulator, I got my ass kicked too much and got frustrated, but I guess my little experience with RPGs in general plus is not my favourite genre didn't help.

I guess I should start with 6 or 7 as I like sci-fi settings more and need something easier.
