So I want to play through the first 6 Final Fantasy games but I thought I'd come here to /vr/ to ask what the best versions of them are. As it stands I played through the DS port of 3 and that's all I've finished. I'm going through the DS port of 4 now and want to hit all 6 games if I can. Posting my favorite early FF girl anyway, Rydia's lovely but Refia is just so!

Before someone comes in with "OH THIS THREAD AGAIN?":

FF1: PSP. GBA is a close second, and the difficulty/combat systems are different enough that I would honestly say it's worth playing both versions. NES version is still good.

FF2: Same as FF1, PSP or GBA, with more of a lean towards PSP. Although I would argue the NES version is pretty unbearable..

FF3: NES. DS version is a full remake, both are good.

FF4: SNES. Like with III, DS version is also a full remake, and again both are good. Due to the load times and overall inability to properly port a game to a disc-based console, Playstation version is shit.

FF5: GBA or SNES. GBA adds some postgame stuff and two whole new jobs, but they're largely the same playing experience, just the GBA has shittier sound but an excellent translation. Again, Playstation version is shit.

FF6: SNES. GBA adds nothing of merit other than a lower resolution and shitty sound, aside from an updated translation. And again, Playstation version is pure shit.

Untrue. New espers, two post-game dungeons. One rather long 3 party split to hunt dragons with a few new mechanics, the other is an arena style game that constantly throws enemies at you giving you a break every 10 fights or so. Also a second chance to get Mog's Water Dances in the world of Ruin. Also the better translation is a perk as well as well as many bug fixes like Relm's Paint not fucking up your entire cart

You are on top with the sound however. But I got an adapter that allowed me to use headphones on the GBA SP which was great

If you have a PSP, play FF1, FF2, FF3 and FF4.

FF3 is a port of the DS version. The psp version adds 16:9 aspect ratio, the original music and a "turbo mode" that doubles the battle speed (like bravely default).

FF4 is an enhanced port, it has cool 2D graphics and it comes with FF4 after years and an Interlude.

Play FF5 and FF6 on gba.

I support this for FF1. FF1 is a really rudimentary game and there's no reason to play the original when the versions with faster leveling exist.

FFII can go either way. I prefer the original version but I can see why some people like the PSP/GBA ones. It depends how much you like the leveling system in the game. I think it's great so that may bias me.

FF3 both are worth playing. They're very different games.

The first four suck, they're basically just Ultima for babies.

5 was when the series really came into its own, and 6-9 is arguably the golden era of the series. Of course I'm sure some contrarian emulatorbabies will find something to hate about the PSX ones.
