Kinda sad theres no animation tools that let you make things on these styles.

I mean, you can use your standard tools exclusively for animation, but theres no dedicated tool for making ellipsoid or vectorball figures, characters, models or animations.

I miss this thing. It wasn't that fancy, but I used to see it a badge of quality in a game.

Tech-oriented anons, can I get a simple explanation of what the technical approach for this kind of thing was? I imagine they calculated a linear or (or even bezier-curved) interpolation function between two points, got evenly spaced positions along it, and put the sprites in those coordinates, but that sounds super difficult to animate with complex setups

Not much more difficult than basic rigging. It's done on the dev machine, and then the coordinates just stored on the cartridge/rom. No work for the machine it's running on.

that bezier approach aside, there's a much more simple one. Bunch of dots connected by "invisible sticks", so they just maintain a constant distance, and make up a simple vector 2D model, which is then animated by hand. No need for interpolation. Think of it as almost literal stick figures, where you only put sprites on the joints and don't draw the sticks.

Circles in particular were used because they still look good even if you don't rotate them (since most consoles can't rotate sprites), or if they're not lined up perfectly.
