They do because Ikaruga is just about the only shmup that gets praised by normies. Basically, it is very popular, and therefore it sucks and stop discussing Ikaruga and instead discuss the proper path to 1cc Samidare EX Mode or what ship is most suited for a score attack in Ether Vapor Remaster.

DDP is awesome and impressive and is the grandpa of danmaku games but still plays more like a classic arcade title and not like fucking Touhou. Ikaruga is a tenement to minimalism and to this date the only videogame I played where doing a perfect run actually gives you the feeling that you achieved something great (and the final boss is one great orgasm).

They are both great. I'd say I like Ikaruga better but that's only cause it is more special while DDP is just a great game inside the vanilla ruleset.

But honestly? Right now I feel like I'd rather play Thunderforce V or Gradius V.

I just can't get into shoot em ups. They're not that fun to me. The literal only way to get good at them is just to play them over and over, and the skill you gain at one game doesn't carry over to others at all beyond knowing when to bomb and other rudimentary shit like that. You're just spending hours and hours memorizing bullet patterns so you can last a few more seconds without dying. Shit's not for me.

it's kind of an acquired taste desu. i absolutely 100% didn't enjoy shoot em ups at all for years and then i played recca and something clicked for me. now they're one of my favorite genres even though i kinda suck.

i just played a good hour or two of ikaruga for the first time on a tate oriented crt and i'm not gonna lie, it's a transcendent experience.

it's kind of a different appeal really, shmups are simple, high intensity games where pattern recognition, reaction times, and instant gratification are all high in importance. run 'n guns are fun but for really different reasons. with a shmup it feels instantly like you're doing better, if that makes sense.

Beat 'em ups have similar memorization in the enemy patterns and bosses compared to an standard shooter, just don't play Psikyo games because they are all about memorization and precise execution.
