>hear so much praise about this
>turns out to be a grindfest
>story for 6 minutes and back to more grinding

>> No.3132694

Now, let's be honest here that's 5 more minutes than it takes to read those message boxes.

>> No.3132695

Welcome to NES RPGs.

>> No.3132697

Welcome to JRPGs

>> No.3132706

The first Final Fantasy really isn't that good, even compared to a lot of other games of its time. Its story only picks up and gets fun towards the end, in the original version at least the gameplay is slow as shit and visually boring, and it doesn't have any interesting mechanics. I prefer II just because it aspired to more than "let's make an OK and objectively sound game," even if it didn't work out, and III's job/class system added a lot of depth.

there are a ton of good JRPGs that dont require as much grinding, atleast FF6 wasn't that heavy on it

>> No.3132717

>>3132712
JRPGs are 50% gring. 30% being lost or trying to find out where to go. 20% time to tell the story.

Welcome to die, X-men.

>want to buy 99 healing potions
>can only buy one at a time

i don't think anyone has ever praised FF1 for being a good standalone game. It was "not terrible and not DQ", which made it an interesting alternative and gave Square the money necessary to continue making games.

>>3132706
FF1 is roughly equal to DQ2 (which was released the same year in Japan) -- for each game there are advantages and disadvantages to each, but in America, FF1 was competing against DQ1, and the advantages of FF1 over DQ1 are numerous (ally and enemy party combat, party customization, more diverse soundtrack, etc). DQ2/FF1 is much more of a wash, and had DQ2 been released at the same time stateside, we might not be talking about FF anywhere as much.

>> No.3132805

Go play Dragon Quest and realize how much better FF1 is.

>> No.3132819

>>3132749
so you're saying DQ1 is bad but 2 is good?

>> No.3132825

Dragon Quest is the tv game equivalent of watching paint dry.

Only brain damaged gob-heads enjoy it. Shame really that Toriyama's artwork was wasted on such a troglodyte series.

>>3132825
Agreed.

It was also competing with Ultima 3, Wizardry 1 and Megami Tensei 1 as well as some obscurer titles like Glory of Herakles.

Oh how times have changed. Welcome to the 80s kid

Whoever praises this game is a nostalgia-fag in denial. This game has been outdone by its own series and many others years ago.

Yeah, sure, Uematsu's score is wonderful and the art is good too, the senseless plottwist in the end is a nice touch. But at its core, it's mediocre. The PSP remake removes all the grinding, fortunately, so you can beat it in less than 10 hours if you really want to

>> No.3135372

>>3132712
FF1 doesn't require any grinding.

Well, I guess it might if you have a party of all thieves or something, but otherwise it doesn't.

>> No.3135676

>>3132712
That came out much later, compare this game to Dragon Quest 1

>> No.3135682

>>3132825
Agree with the first thing, but toriyama is some ass, albeit he's good with atmosphere and makes interesting settings, but he dies like 5 different characters with minor permutations

>> No.3135693

>>3132819
I don't want to call Dragon Quest "bad"... You could say that, but really it's just primitive. this is an example of a game "not aging well". DQ laid down all the basics of JRPGs. any game that came out after it outclassed it in just about every way.

>> No.3135791

>>3135693
>DQ laid down all the basics of JRPGs.
The basics of copying Ultima? And in the case of DQ1 that was Ultima 1 and 2 which came out at the beginning of the decade, not the more advanced sequels.

I only played FFI to get the jokes in the 8bit theater comic desu

>> No.3138187

Nobody hypes FF1, what the fuck?

>Yeah, I played DQ1 on the NES, seems shit, I guess the whole franchise is like this!

If you don't recognize that DQ is an excellent franchise, your opinion isn't worth shit to begin with and you really have no place speaking on JRPGs.
